We discuss all types of fragrance. We also have threads on Food, the Arts and Life. There are over 13,000 members on the board. We also have several well-known perfumers (noses) who participate. It is a very busy, but fun and interesting board.

Well, RNOcean.....'an international fragrance lover's board'........I would never have dreamed there WAS such a thing. Natural fragrances, or perfumes and such? You'll have to tell us more. My Parkinson's Disease has robbed me of the awareness of most fragrances/smells except for the strongest. It's something I miss. An under rated sense!

I am a retired RN who loves to read and now I have the time to do it! I live in Michigan. I also moderate an international fragrance lover's board, so I divide my time between reading, being on the computer and taking care of my 6 cats.
So RNOcean, are you a nurse who lives on the Coast, or do you have another name we can call you? Tell us a little about yourself..........We have a couple of new posters we'd love to get to know better. Don't be bashful! :o)

Thanks for the welcome! I used to frequent the Cafe back on AOL, but you know how that goes! I kind of like this new place and also belong to Readers and Reading.
Hi, RNOCEAN ! Glad to see you.
I haven't heard of "Idiocracy". I'll keep an eye out for it. It sounds like one I would appreciate.
from wiki--
Idiocracy is a 2006 comedic film, directed by Mike Judge and starring Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph.
The film tells the story of two ordinary people who are taken into a top-secret military hibernation experiment that goes awry, and awaken 500 years in the future. They discover that the world has degenerated into a dystopia where advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism run rampant and dysgenic pressure has resulted in a uniformly stupid human society devoid of individual responsibility or consequences.
Despite its lack of a major theatrical release, the film has achieved a cult following.

I agree with this statement 100%. I have to say I don't understand people like this, but there seems to be a lot people like this.
As for "agog" I had been listening to the CD of Les Miz. and it's one of the songs and stuck in my head. LOL

Well, misery loves company, and I guess the agog do too. :)

Has anyone seen the film "Idiocracy"? I read all of the posts on the current lack of education by many in the USA and it reminded me of this movie!
Gee Alias, and Barbara, you've said what was on my mind pretty much, so I won't have much to rant about. Just for curiosity this morning, I watched the first few minutes of the 3 morning shows to see what they'd cover. NBC, ABC, CBS, and even some CNN) Seems like ABC was the one that focused more on the Wars, Bad weather, and H1N1 before retelling the Balloon Boy story.
I heard 3 more of our soldiers were killed yesterday in Aphganistan (wrong spelling). I think I heard that 20 had died so far this month. So many families lost their loved ones. Eleven children died this week from N1H1. Many more important stories to tell. I guess the picture of that 'flying saucer' made an easier story to tell...........stepping down off the soap box now.......
Donna in Southern Maryland
Oh believe me -- I am not giving people excuses. But maybe I am because if you only have a year of American History and choices have to made as to what to cover -- I am not totally sure where to start in a curricula.
I also find that the general public is not particularly intellectually curious. Is that a nice way of putting it? So once they are out of school they read nothing -- or what I would describe as light reading only. It just unfortunately is what I have come to expect. Not that I like it.
You do realize that many (don't know the percentage so I am not going to say most) have no idea who their representatives are. They think they know that they don't like what "government" does but they don't even know who to get in touch with or what area of government local, city, state, federal is responsible for what. It can be most frustrating.
Oh, I am a curmudgeon (sp?) I never thought that the Leno spots were funny. Agog isn't a strong enough word for what I am. LOL
And yes I am waiting for the what global warming story. Although if I follow our inclination to turn off the TV I'll do my best to escape it as the people I deal with regularly will know the right thing.
And now I have ranted along with you. LOL
Barbara
True, not everyone is into history. However, not to know the basic facts of the Great Depression? And just because a few right wingers have recently written books saying FDR handled things wrong and extended the GD, doesn't make it so.
I know I've mentioned this before but I was in the library when a patron asked the librarian for a book on the GD. She replied she needed the patron to tell her what year that was in order to help them find a book. Another time in Barnes and Noble I overheard a customer tell a clerk he needed a book for his son about the inventor of the atomic bomb. But the father didn't' know who that was. The clerk didn't either. I know 2 examples don't make a national crisis and maybe I am wrong, but it seems that more people know about American Idol than who can name the vice president.
I know you were a history major, Barbara. People's ignorance on basic facts must leave you agog. And I am talking about Facts not Opinions.
This ignorance extends to so many areas. Just the other day someone was TV saying talking about climate change. The person clearly had no idea that daily weather and climate are two different things. I can almost guarantee on TV this weekend there will be someone talking about the recent snow and cold in the NE and say what global warming?
Then there are people who deny carbon dating and how old the earth is. The "museum" for creationists in the south, actually has dinosaurs and people living together.
Sometimes it can be funny. The Leno skits come to mind, but now it seems to be reaching a tipping point.
I know we have been all over this topic before. I posted a lot on it when I read The Age of American Unreason by Susan Jacoby.
Ok, enough of my rant.
Even supposedly educated people seem to know little of history. Sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. How true, how true.
Barbara
I agree Marie-Vicky. Many of the daily papers are a disgrace. They are shallow and little more than tabloids in what they choose to focus on. They barely give a mention to the important stories of the day. And if they do it is in the most shallow and superficial way. Is it any wonder the public is so ignorant and easily lead?
Just today on Chris Matthews program he was talking to a "tea bag" person. This tea bag person was saying that we should have done nothing when the economy was going off a cliff and many thought we were headed for a second Great Depression. He said we should have just let the free market do it's thing.
Chris asked him if he knew what Hoover advocated. The man replied that he knew nothing about Hoover. Good Grief. :(
I like to collect quotes. Here are a few that I like.

Re balloon episode
I just came back from Montreal.Believing or not this story was was on every newspapers's front cover. This Balloon will cross the world without an interesting story. There are so many more important things to talk about but I supposed our country prefer focusing on this kind of story instead.
Re Balloon episode.
This is clearly TV at its worst. Thank heaven I didn't have the TV on as it was occurring. As I flipped the channels last night, I was baffled why this was more than a 30 second story. It would be one thing if the kid was in the balloon but he wasn't.
I saw this balloon family on Wife Swap. Of course this is a TV show and thus fictional and things are done to make the show interesting. So for what it is worth, they were portrayed as a family that was a bit out there. And if I recall, the father was portrayed as childish.
You did the right thing, Donna. More and more the right response to TV is to - Turn It Off. :)
"South of Broad" was clearly more fun than Balloon Boy. I wasn't paying attention to the interviews so you are saying he actually threw up on camera. Geez!!
What have we all come to?
Barbara
Yesterday, it was a cold, rainy, and nasty day here. So in the afternoon, I turned the TV off, and snuggled down on the couch with South of Broad and my ipod. I am so glad I did not get caught up in this :Balloon Boy" thing............
I didn't hear about it until we turned on the news about 7. Then this morning, I'm watching the Today Show ..........they had already done the Larry King Show last night.........and here's the family again! And the kid is throwing up! Good gracious. I almost don't know what to say. How about throwing the cameras out, getting some sleep and taking care of your sick child????
Flipping back to Morning Joe, I see that the kid also threw up while doing an interview with GMA. UGH! Sick. The whole thing is just SICK...........
I think I am turning off the TV again and going back to bed.

It seems to me that if you do damage to your patient and the patient dies then so does the money. So at some level I think it has much to do with the "power" of celebrity too. Here is this celeb who is telling you that his care depends on you and how can you refuse him. It is for sure about inner strength. Read a column the other day that was titled something like -- needing a DR. NO. As in someone with the strength to say NO.
Jennifer wrote: "I know the money looks good to them but when did the doctors stop thinking in the best interest of the patient and start thinking of what it in the best interest of their wallet. Sad world we live in...."This amazes we as well. I guess the lesson here is that no matter what your education/training/ profession if your principles aren't in line you have the same potential to act stupidly and do damage as anyone else. Life seemed so much easier when you could take people at face value and count on them, but I'm old enough to know better now.
Deb.. we were at Clark Hill/Strom Thurmond Lake.
There's a Lake Hartwell in Upstate SC. Our friend live up that way.
DEB... lol.. I didn't dare tell bf what I was thinking. He would have said.. NO MORE NANCY GRACE. ha ha

I would like to think that doctors to celebrities would learn from this. Jennifer mentioned that they are thinking of the best interest of their wallet, rather than their patient. I must add that the celebrity aspect probably pulls them in as fast as anything else...and means they would do much to keep that patient.

You must have been at Lske Hartwell. That lake is about an hour north of me. It would be creepy with the fog. A lot of people in my area have "lake" homes up there. Beautiful.
That case about the 11 yo that was taken 18 years ago is the exact reason I do not let my daughter go with her friends to the public park around the corner from our house without an adult. I remember when America's Most Wanted started on TV and I used to watch it even though I was just a kid. Its amazing that we live among all these people who take children and women and do whatever. Sometimes its someone you know that takes you and does it or sometimes its random.
The Michael Jackson thing is terrible. It is sad that when you are famous and have money you can buy whatever you think you need. Although the doctors should know better too. I know the money looks good to them but when did the doctors stop thinking in the best interest of the patient and start thinking of what it in the best interest of their wallet. Sad world we live in.

Donna.. I remember seeing the story about the police detectives dd. I wasn't aware the trial was in progress. So glad he was found guilty. It is scary to hear about all these abductions. And what about the VA TECH couple that was just found murdered in the National Park.
And the foster parents of the 5 yo CP child that was featured on Nancy Grace are now suspects in his murder. After the foster father came on NG pleading for help to find the boy. OMG.
I also saw the story on the 11 yo kidnapped 18 years ago. How tragic. And the poor step father was a suspect all these years. How will this woman and these children ever adjust?
BUT I may have to quit watching the news and CNN. When we were driving around the GA/SC border tonight it was so DARK, pitch black, and foggy. We were by a lake and the fog was heavy. No one was around and we pulled over to an overlook area. Here I was looking around in case there was some murderer lurking around.
Jackson's wealth was the ultimate cause of his death...had he not been able to have his own "personal doctor/enabler", as Donna said, he would not have had those drugs to "help him sleep". I saw that sad case on Dateline too, Donna. Just tragic - and quite a bit of bumbling, if I recall. The woman who called from her car....police were not sent to that locale when the woman lost sight of the abductor's vehicle.
I have been following a trial all this week on TruTV (used to be CourtTV) that was taking place in Sarasota, Florida. I first saw this case on Dateline NBC. It happened in January 2008. A 20 year old mother of a 2 year old and a 6 month old is abducted, raped, and murdered. Her Dad is a police detective in an adjoining county. So he was able to mobilize lots of police out looking for her.
The worst part was that a woman saw her being held in the back seat of a car, screaming and beating on the window. She called 911 to report it. The call was routed to the next county. Unfortunately, she said it was a small hand, so probably a child, and for some reason, the call was never followed up on. Even worse, the girl was able to get the abductor's cell phone and call 911. It was played in the court room, and we heard the poor girl pleading for her life. She was shot and killed shortly after, and buried in a sand pit.
They were able to find the guy that night, and 2 days later, they found her body. Just a young mother, weighed less than 100 pounds. Apparently picked by random.
Well, I am pleased to report that this scum bucket was fould guilty on all charges today, and starting in Sept. 1st, the Death Penalty part of the trail begins. Just a very sad case.
On top of that, today I have also followed the case in CA of the girl that was kidnapped 18 years ago and held as a sex slave; gave birth to 2 children. It is so hard to believe that such monsters live among us, but they do, in ever increasing numbers. How I wish we could find and bring all these poor children home where they belong.
Finally, since this started as a Michael Jackson thread, the coroner has finally ruled his death a homicide. The list of medications that he was given the day he died just boggles my mind. An addict with his own personal doctor/enabler.
A sad news day, but Justice was served in one case.

I loved MJ's OFF THE WALL album. I went out dancing all the time in the 80's. MJ's music was fun and uplifting.
And what about Billy Mays dying at 50 this weekend. My goodness. I just saw this guy on Conan last week.
Then the reports said his plane landed hard in Tampa yesterday throwing stuff out of the overhead and it landed on HIS head. Oh no.... you can bet that set off this chain reaction. How scary.
LaTrica wrote: "MTV and VH1 are playing his videos and I miss that MJ."
I've been watching some of the videos, too, and enjoying them very much. It's been years since i've seen them, so it's refreshing.
I've missed seeing the invasive photos, as well. I'm just not watching the news-circus. All i want to know will filter down to me soon enough.
deborah
I get most of my news from internet sources and there weren't any invasive pictures. Glad I missed those. I think MJ just had more fans than FF. In the US they're probably equal but internationally MJ most likely wins.
I'm one of those people who grew up listening to MJ and I'm surprised by how hard this hit me. MTV and VH1 are playing his videos and I miss that MJ. Not the mess that was displayed for the last 15 years.
Meredith, i agree with what you wrote. It's something i can appreciate, even though Jackson didn't make the same kind of impact on me as Lennon. His dancing, however, awed me & continues to do so.
I was traveling when both Elvis & Lennon died, so i didn't see the news coverage & how continued it was. However, i suspect it wasn't as intense, solely due to the fact that 24/7 television news wasn't widespread. Did CNN exist when Lennon died? I can't recall.

Deborah,
I think they may be going a little overboard on the coverage of Michael Jackson's death, However, he truly did change the way people did view nd hear music. The reaction to his death by those who came of gae in the 80's is how those who came of age in the 50's reacted to Elvis' death and those who came of age in the 60's and 70's reacted to Lennon's death

No Deborah, I don't see how people can compare it to Diana. That is obsurd. Many are shocked at the extreme attention his death is getting. Yes, he was young but hadn't most people abandoned him in the past 15 years. Not just fans but friends, business contacts, etc. And was this family ever close? Taht was always questionable too.
As for Sanford Joann I was just hoping someone would pull him away from the mike. OMG.. TMI X 10. It just makes me mad that it make the entire State look like a bunch of baffoons. The people who brought this to the attention of the press KNEW exactly what was going on and the politician who did it Jake Knox is a disgrace too. A big redneck bigot.
Alias... I was watching when they showed the body being carried to the helicopter and just said NO, no, no.. this is too much. And the pic of him on the stretcher intubated.. this is not right. TV needs to draw the line somewhere. Do people really want to see this.. .not me. Just like when Sanford was gushing about the mistress... sickening. Too much personal info for me.
Jan.. I sort of felt for Farrah being "upstaged" by Michaels death.
Deborah.. don't feel so bad. I feel for MJ and FF but what did FF ever do. One season on Charlie's Angels and a poster. She was invovled with a man who abused her and raised a son that's a herion addict. OK, now that's cold but it's all true. As Alias said what people like the book nookers. Who contribute as teachers, parents, spouses... I think that's more important in the long run.

Jennifer I hear ya. The book am currently reading The Culture of Fear really drives home your point. The way stats are misused is just one thing to look out for. The examples in the book are a bit dated as the book was published in 2000. However, the main thesis is spot on.
If you do tune into the news, read the newspaper or magazine article these books will at least arm you.

Why, yes, i can tell, Jan. And couldn't agree more. It's the attention they seem to crave which disturbs me. (And i'm even going to throw in Gov. Sanford, whose press exhibition reeked of "ME!") It's sad that they relate to others in unusual ways, too. For instance, as Kate mentioned, Eliz. Taylor & MJ. If i understand correctly they bonded over the child star business. I don't think i'd blame either of them for the loss of their childhood but withdrawing from fame was always an option they (& others) seemed not to see.
I suppose we are intended to be enlightened by the Fawcett tv show & her honesty about her struggle with the disease. My supposition is she felt there was a curiosity upon which she could build something positive. To me it smacks too much of a yen for a final spotlight. Gosh, that is as mean-spirited as i get...or so i hope.
I am disturbed by the coverage of MJ & feel for his family. It'll be a feeding frenzy for months. How long before there are Michael Jackson "sightings"? Oops! I guess that wasn't as mean-spirited as i get.
I'll stop now before i disgrace myself further.

I agree totally Barbara. I think his childhood was taken from him by his parents, primarily his father. Nothing in his life was normal or typical for a young boy. He simply never had the skills to be happy in this life. Elizabeth Taylor is his best friend? I always thought that was so desperate. The last years were so weird and creepy. I hope he's at peace now.
Re: Michael Jackson: I've already said on the M/T board that he seemed a tortured soul, so as long as his children will be protected and cared for, his death is at least a release from his troubles. I was a bit too old for his music, so I don't have that nostalgia for the excitement of his performances. I do remember, in the early days of MTV, watching constantly to catch his videos. Loved his dancing.
I feel a bit sorry for Farrah Fawcett, who died with dignity in a loving environment, to be so overshadowed by the Michael Jackson freak show.

As far as Michael Jackson is concerned I am in deborah's camp -- maybe I am just too old. It is sad when anyone so young dies suddenly -- and as far as I am concerned despite the music, his life was really a tragedy. A rich tragedy, but nonetheless a tragedy.

Why with all these stories do we need to hear and see the very last lurid detail? Can nothing be private anymore?
Did we really need a death watch Barbara Walters special with Farrah? She is doing the same thing with Patrick Swasey. Frankly, I find it repulsive and refuse to participate by watching.

Not only his wife, who is the only one with a right to hear all that, didn't want to hear it. I'm surprised by the outpouring regarding Jackson's death. Surely it's a sign i'm too old, right? I heard someone compare reactions to his death with that of Princess Diana. Do you agree? And then there is Don't Cry for me Argentina...
