198122 I'm curious: Is there somewhere a comprehensive list of all the urban fantasy heroines and heroes and their series? Like Briggs' Mercy Thompson, Del Franco's Connor Grey, Andrews' Kate Daniels etc.? There are so many of them now that it's hard to keep track of all them and new ones pop up every day!

1313648 I don't know of one, but it would be nice if someone could create something like that for urban fantasy, like www.stopyourekillingme.com does for mysteries.

325271 www.fantasticfiction.co.uk is where I go to look up authors to be certain I'm reading the series in order. The authors are usually linked by genre there too. For example, if I look up Patricia Briggs it will have a list of other authors at the bottom of the page that are similar. I spend way too much time there clinking from one author to another!

198122 Thank you for both tips. It's too bad that there's no list per se. It would be very helpful.

Had to do a quick search, as it's actually http://www.stopyourekillingme.com, but that's an awesome site. I love mysteries although I haven't read one in a while.

Sorry about my goof with the typo. :-( I'll fix it.

86806 If you all would like to compile a list, I'd be happy to host it on my blog. :)

1804133 Is there a way to create a Google doc, or Yahoo database, or something where everyone could add records but the system would sort and alphabetize for us? That way we wouldn't duplicate info. Or should we just shout out series?

message 9: by TDF Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

86806 Okay, I created a Google Doc here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=r...

You have to have a Google account to edit. Happy adding! :D

Once we get a solid list going, I'll polish it up and put it up as a page on my blog. :)

198122 I started to build one too.

I have so many series started that I needed a list for myself but if it can help someone...

I can't write in >.< Did you invite people to collaborate or just to view?

86806 Gah, I thought I had it set so that anyone who clicks that link can edit, but obviously I don't know what the heck I'm doing in Google Docs. I think it's set right now.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=r...

Can someone test it out and see if they can edit the document?

message 14: by TDF Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

86806 Also, if you have any suggestions for categories or more information, please let me know and I'll add it. :)

Works just fine for me :)

198122 I'm continuing my list too:

http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcp33q7h_0...

If someone knows of any other series, drop me a note here?

message 17: by TDF Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

86806 Excellent. I think I unchecked something I shouldn't have, heh.

If you guys could spread the word to any other PNR/UF readers and bloggers, that would be great!

message 18: by Jan (new)

2245377 Yep, it works :)

message 19: by TDF Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

86806 Oh, and be sure to scroll sideways! There are columns for genre (PNR, UF, SF romance, etc) and your name, so you can get credit for adding!

message 20: by Jan (new)

2245377 oops. going to update lol

2387810 I was going to start a new thread on here asking about overused character names. Will that be covered on this list? If it's a spreadsheet I could just sort by name.

I am a newbie writer and am working on a paranormal romance piece. It will probably never see the publishing light of day, but I’ll proceed with it anyway.

The reason I was wondering about names is I'd like to avoid cliché or overused names. My people have been named and I like the ones I picked, but if there are already fifteen Marcus characters out there, then I will maybe think of something new.

Thanks

Jenna

1125077 Great thread, great idea for organizing series and whatnot =D. Can get a little tidbit of info on each character (a reminder) and kinda know which series to pick up next.

FWIW, whatever you name your characters (unless you totally make up a new name) you will start seeing it everywhere. It's like when you buy a new car in this really cool shade of royal blue, all of a sudden you see it everywhere...

I write stuff too that will never see the light of day (but it's great fun!) I named a character Harmony a couple years ago and now I see it everywhere. I've given up on trying to be original with names. Marcus is a cool name. Doesn't matter how many there are, yours will be unique.

I read an interesting article where Stephanie Meyer was discussing her choice of the name Edward (Cullen). That's not a name you think of much any more for romance but in its time, it was a very romantic name, she said. And you know what? My 14yo daughter now loves her Uncle Ed's name! Go figure. The moral is the story makes the name, not the other way around.

2387810 Maureen - thanks for the feedback.

I see what you are saying and have heard that from women who are pregnant or just had a baby. Suddenly the world is pregnant.

I'll stick with the names I have so far, Marcus being one of them. The main female and male characters are Anna and Simon. I'm about 8000 words into this story and I am getting attached to the names - so I think I'll keep them.

I tried to open the Google link to the comprehensive list but for some reason it is not recognizing my Google log in - weird.

Jenna
