2342217 Kevin -> GREAT FD! Jealous of those ribs. They look delicious.

The IHOP breakfast with my dad, his gf and her daughter went splendid! My dad enjoyed himself and actually liked it better than going to a dinner together. PLUS he's excited for the complete ST:TNG series to arrive in the mail. Whee.

And I helped him find a shirt to match a strange tie he has at home.

My boss had a great FD. Each of his kids made him something. A picture frame, a pottery cup, and painted a picture. Then they bought him a couple of plants for his office. Each pot has a little special message written from each of his kids and his wife. That's special ^.^ Oh and his kids created playlists on his hand-me-down iPod.

2366269 Harbor?

message 40: by RandomAnthony (new)

721021 My kids got me a Ryan Braun jersey, which they all would love to wear, but as I'm too old to be wearing another man's name on my back I snuck and exchanged it for a couple of new shirts:)

But at least I didn't break my foot or go couch shopping.:)

I also sat in the park in the harbor for a while...needed that...

2366269 Looks like you had a wonderful fathers day Kevin, you are blessed because you realize you are.

2366269 My husband decided to go Motor Cross riding with his son and broke his foot, not his best father's day...

1639357 I made a carrot cake w/cream cheese frosting for Jared, gave him The Big Lebowski 10th Anniversary Ed & my daughter made him a lego replica of a new office (he's up for an interview w/Tmobile in Bellevue, so cross your fingers!), and then we went to eat yummy pasta and played at the park. Pretty good day.

My Dad was up at his Boy Scout camp, as he has every year for the past 30 years... (nope, not bitter about the good ol' BSA, not one bit) and we'll be having a big family gathering next week with the whole fam-damnily, so he'll be celebrated then.

1144499 Yes, he should.

289556 I spent Fathers' Day with my mom, we went to the University Bookstore in Seattle, and then went to Crate and Barrel and shopped around for a couch, stuff like that. We did not buy a couch.
But we reminisced about dad (he died while I was still in college) over dinner, so it worked as a Fathers' Day, too.
Chris should really call his dad before it gets too late...

936208 5.5/9 hours. Almost doneeeee, kind of.

Taking a "quick" break for a bite to eat and a walk while the sun's still shining.

most excellent day with my dad and kids up on the Wabash River where my dad owns some property. i packed up everything and hauled my truck and a car load of my kids and their respective BF/GF's along with a young guy who doesn't have a dad and we met me dad and my brother with his family there. we had a great day of fishing, wading, swimming, canoeing and hanging out. i cooked pork chops on a rock (my specialty - i put flat rocks right in the fire, pour water on them when they are hot to boil them clean and then cook right on them) along with hot dogs and other goodies. we had water melon and s'mores and other junk. my kids got me an awesome gift (although had to top just being there with me) and i watched my dad taking the whole deal in. super nice day. i am blessed

908433 Now that the big gift has been givin, sounds like Steve is going to the races with our eldest and her fiance, our son left for Oregon last night, and our youngest daughter (almost 23) will be off doing her own thing, so I'll put a pot roast in the oven at the strategic time and break open my new Conan book- looks more like mothers day to me ;P

1569525 My dad is driving to Charlottesville tomorrow. Something law-related, I'm sure. We'll have to celebrate on Monday. ...And his birthday is on Tuesday, so there's a lot of work to do.

I remember Worlds of Fun!! I grew up in Independence, so there wasn't much to do except for the occasional trip to that great place. As of right now, I think my kids made something for me and I'll be smoking some dry rub ribs. That and maybe a trip to the book store. My wife also feels gipped because I am usually on the ship, which I can't really help being in the Navy and all.

1572605 My husband is going to get an old set of Encyclopedia Britannica today. Its taken me a long time to get a set I could afford. I hope he likes them (I know I will)>

2099017 One day I would LOVE to go all out for my husband on father's day. He's home for only about half of them. (navy family) But military doesn't make much and with 3 kids and one on the way we do what we can. So he's only getting a couple of new video games and a borders books gift certificate. But this year his mom will be here to celebrate with us. Of course he gets the whatever he wants for breakfast and dinner deal. Hope everyone Father's day is wonderful.

message 23: by Vicki Jean (new)

908433 oh michelle, honey, in the 26 years Steve and I have been togther I have felt your pain more than once.
VJ's fabulous fix's for dads on the fritz

1) men who totally go lame on mothers day then expect the moon and the stars for FD
a) get him the thing you wanted most, hinted about for months but received something lame instead

2)the man who thinks just sticking around is good enough, what, he bestowed you with life all ready right?
a) pack your kids up for a day of fun, make sure to give him a kiss on your way out the door, and let him know the day is his to spend as he sees fit, suggest that dads day special they have going on at Denny's ;P

oh, I believe a gift certificate to the largest mall in town is in order as well, you know one he can only spend there ;)

908433 so for fathers day I went all out, f@#% the grilling stuff, I do most of that anyways.

My husband has wanted a trailer for his motorcycle since the day he bought it back in 03'.
One of the drivers that comes through the yard just so happens to be a neighbor (really good one apparently) to a guy who owns a trailer joint up here and offered my husband one at cost. "come on Vic, its only 1200, you wont find anything better" blah, blah, blah. I gave them both my "when hell freezes over" speach and walked away (doing sums in my head)

It took me a couple of weeks, but I worked it all out and had it delivered to work on Thursday. When I called Steve to the front gate from the barge I got "can it wait Vic, I'm a bit busy" "No" I responded (I'm sure he thought he was going to have to back me up with some outlaw trucker)
He hopped on his machine and came right up. You should have seen his face when he saw the Bronco parked out front towing the very trailer he tried to talk me into.

"No way, No way" he said it about 6 times.
I looked him staight in the eyes and just said "he wants to know where to drop it"

oh, I also got him a really great tie!

!!!!!!!!HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!!!!!!!

936208 Exactly, Larry.

I wonder how they'd take that on a resume.

936208 Hi, Michelle. I'm studying for my MCATs this summer -- when I'm not cleaning or bumming around on goodreads. ^^;

message 15: by Michelle (new)

2366269 what ya studyin?

message 14: by Nools (last edited Jun 19, 2009 04:59PM) (new)

936208 Got a call from home and joked about my Father's Day gift, but Dad really was thrilled: "Excellent! I want nine hours, minimum! And a practice exam!"

... I don't know that the library is even open nine hours on Sundays.

message 13: by Nools (new)

936208 KEVIN. I am so jealous. I mean: I hope everyone has a really amazing time. : )

After having made weekend trips to LA two (or three?) weekends in a row, I will be missing home on Father's Day. Sorry, Dad. : (

Knowing my father, though, it'll make him happiest if I spend Sunday at the library, over texts. Eh. Not easy, but easier on the wallet than neckties and caviar. : /

message 12: by Tanja (new)

2342217 Possibly. I might go with Enemy Mine while holding out for the newest ST movie box set release. Current big one is nearly $200. Althought ST:TNG is at $319 (Complete Series) which is fantastic all things considered.

Or I'll dig into some good old BBC series.

message 11: by Sarah Pi (new)

642041 What about a lesser known SF movie like Sunshine?

message 10: by Tanja (new)

2342217 Sarah Pi: My father and I do the same. But we swapped a bunch a while ago during a liquidation sale. Although, I might get him all the ST movies as a single box set. Ooh there's an idea!

1757741 i will post pics of the family outing on monday :)

message 8: by Sarah Pi (new)

642041 We got my father The Arrival and Will Eisner's New York Life in the Big City New York, The Building, City People Notebook, Invisible People (Will Eisner Library). My family expresses love through books and music and the occasional DVD.It's good to have a common currency.

message 7: by Tanja (new)

2342217 Kevin => Bring out the classic board games. They're winners to bond groups of people together. And it's fun to play the games you did as a child. Or try Cranium. It's a hit with my family and co-workers.

And I'm jealous. PORK CHOPS! Mmmm. Hey TCers, thinking what I'm thinking? Let's go visit Kevin!

message 6: by Michelle (new)

2366269 My hubby has been an as lately so I am going to remember it's about the kids, my oldest is peeved at him too though so, I am trying to help her remember he is just human, It's hard though when I feel like a hypocrit(did i spell that right?). It's not my fault he can't hide his screwups from his older kids anymore. Am I whinning?? I am sorry,
Fathers day, yeah!

message 5: by Tanja (new)

2342217 My dad is a sci-fi geek who has nearly every movie. Yarg. He's hard to buy for but I think I'm gonna request a special father-daughter early breakfast at IHOP

message 4: by Sarah Pi (new)

642041 That sounds lovely...

message 3: by Cj_ (new)

961244 You are a cool father Kevin, i hope my father can think positive like you...

1757741 All of my kids and their respective GF/BF's along with my wife, dad and a few young guys who don't have a dad around all go to my dad's place on the Wabash River for a day of fishing, swimming, sitting around in chairs and cooking out (we are cooking pork chops on a hot rock cave man style this year). this is the highlight of my dad's year and a fav of mine also.

721021 If I'm not mistaken fathers' day is this weekend. Don't forget!

I hate all the advertising around fathers' day. Today in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, too, they had an article about good fathers' day gifts that featured...grilling. Listen, media, in the same way that all women don't live for, I don't know, shoes and makeup, not all guys live for golf, tools, and grilling. Stupid newspaper cliches.

Anyway, put all that side and have a great fathers' day weekend, all you fathers out there...
