774274 i'm really glad how long have i needed to talk about these books! Dianna Gabaldon is one clever lady

message 3: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Yes, what an imagination! A series that has EVERYTHING...

message 4: by Colette (new)

776281 Hi everyone! I just joined the group, and wanted to say that the Outlander is one of my favorite books, and love the entire series!

message 5: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Welcome Colette! Glad you are here!

message 6: by Fiona (new)

774274 hi, there is word that Dianna is writting an other book in this series & that there is a film in the making.

message 7: by Fiona (new)

774274 yep there is another book in the making its called An echo in the bone! cant wait! have just read a wee snippet from it on Dianna's website

message 8: by Stacey (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Diana is by far one of my favorite authors. Everyone should check out her website. She is creating a graphic novel, and there is already an image of Claire on there. I can't wait to finally see what she thinks Jamie looks like!

message 9: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 "An Echo in the Bone" Continuing the Outlander series. I'm looking forward to that. A movie, too. Cool.

message 10: by Fiona (new)

774274 i dont suppose i'm going to b lucky enough for them to film the movie in scotland!

message 11: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 I hope the movie is as good as the book(s). Sometimes, they can be so disappointing.

Seems like in order to be more realistic, filming (at least parts) in Scotland would be the logical thing to do, but hey, I'm often surpised to learn where a movie was filmed...

:-)

message 12: by Fiona (new)

774274 yeah me too, they can b very dissapoionting & miss so much of the story out.

well ye would think so but they have a habbit of filming so called "scottish sceans" in new zealand or ireland.

if i hear anything on the grapevine around here i will let you know :)

message 13: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Okay, thank you Fiona.

message 14: by Tracy (new)

614049 I just joined this group. I am so excited that Book 7 of the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon is coming out. I hadn't been on her website in a while but I did and read the excerpts. I can't wait! I know she doesn't give a publish date. Any guesses??? I think this would be one book I would have to break down and buy because I couldn't wait for the library.

message 15: by Kathrynn (last edited Mar 11, 2008 04:41PM) (new)

669573 I'm excited about "An Echo in the Bone," too. If anyone has an update on this, please be sure to post it to us.

I wonder if it's going to be a mini-series for t.v. or movie?

message 16: by Fiona (new)

774274 hey all,

has anyone found out the name of the 8th book?

yes people there is going to be an 8th book!!

message 17: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 I looked around Ms. Gabaldon's website and couldn't find anything about an 8th book. Interestingly, her copyright page informs people about her desire not to have her printed information posted anywhere. I would understand her books, but not to have her biography, website information shared seemed strange to me.

Kinda of like actors or musicians complaining about being famous.

While I respect a person's write to privacy, some professions seem more suited to privacy than others...

message 18: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 On another note, did anyone happen to catch the Dr. Phil show about the paparazzi or stockarazzi? It aired last week, I think.

Gene Simmons (from the rock group KISS) was on there, wearing dark sunglasses, and with a straight face said something like this.

*If I step outside my home, 100, 200 yards, I expect to have my picture taken. But, if they mess with my children, I will go to their homes and burn their pets.*

I had to stop it and play it back to make sure that's what he said. :-)

Well, I bet he doesn't have any problems, huh?

message 19: by Lisa (new)

964351 I think the reason she has a strict copyright policy is because she just likes to know what's being said about her. I don't think it's that she's complaining about being famous; as she meets with fans quite often and is willing to send bookplates for free to anyone who requests them.

message 20: by Lisa (new)

964351 I can't blame anyone for wanting privacy for their family. And once you've reached the peak of your career, like Simmons has; you'd think they'd start to leave you alone anyway!!

I can appreciate celebrities that don't like to be interrupted when eating; that's just obnoxious. If you're at the mall or something though, that's fair game.

Very interesting discussion topic, by the way, Kathrynn!

message 21: by Kathrynn (last edited Mar 17, 2008 07:02AM) (new)

669573 Excellent points, Lisa!

It seems unrealistic to me to have a career in the public and expect to control what is being said about you. (ya know?) I'm not up on current law, but I believe people in the "limelight" have less "expectation" to privacy than those in non-public careers.

Copying her written work should and is protected under Copyright Laws, but controlling what is said about her...not so much. And, if she is trying to know what is being said about her, that's not realistic either. What do you think?

Things sometimes get said about authors in reviews and not always in a good way. (yikes!) Author's cannot and should not be able to control what is being said about them. As private citizens, here in the U.S., we are safe from most things as long as we preface a statement with three little words..."In my opinion...."

Thank you for the feedback. I've been sweating over what will get this group talking!!!!! ;-)

message 22: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Gene Simmons also mentioned "stars" should have to "write the checks" for added security they cause on California taxpayers. They brought up Britney Spears costing taxpayers $25,000 for her "escort" to the hospital, i.e., police officers, helicopter. That's crazy! All to hold off the paparazzi and clear the road for her trip.

So, while scary looking, I agree with him on that. ;-)

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

message 23: by Inky (last edited Mar 28, 2008 11:26PM) (new)

392439 Hi all!

I can't resist a thread on Outlander, one of my favorite series ever. This isn't just time travel, it's epic time travel, with all sorts of odd things thrown against a historical backdrop. One of my favorite plot devices is placing the heroine in an impossible situation, and that's something Claire faces over and over. As for Jaime, what a refreshing departure from the run-of-the-mill advantaged, wealthy, darkly brooding leading man. What I love most is his humanity and loyalty to his family in times that would break most others.

As for the paparazzi, they wouldn't be there if the photos didn't pay. I've decreased the market demand by one -- I don't look at it or miss it. I've got better things to do than follow the lives of questionable celebrities making bad decisions.

message 24: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 I hear ya, Inky, they don't get my money or attention either. Finally, got my mother to stop buying that stuff, too. :-)

message 25: by Christy (new)

1036242 I am a slow poke.. I am only in book 4.. But these are great books. I have been lucky enough to see some of the areas mentioned in the books last summer before starting these books. They would be stupid not to film in scotland. If Harry potter can be filmed in Fort Williams why can't we see Jamie running through the area in his kilt. Scotland is a beautiful place. I feel fortunate to have visited Scotland before reading the books. I can see them on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, walking through inverness, Oxford, Glencoe, Fort William.. I have hiked out to a waterfall. Oh my goodness those people were brave.. those mountians are steep and rocky. I was lucky to have great weather while there but I could not imagine dealing constant rain or even snow.. I can wait to finish these.. I am also glad she is putting out another book next year.

message 26: by Keely (new)

1044742 I just mentioned this in another thread. It's my favorite time travel Romance series of all time. Like Inky said it's "Epic" time travel. The depth of love and devotion between Claire and Jamie is really beautiful.

message 27: by Kendra (new)

1262268 Stacey, you mentioned Diana Gabaldon is creating a graphic novel and there is an image of Claire already. Where can you find it? I have searched her website to no avail. Thanks!

message 28: by Sherry (new)

1294357 If you go the archive section of her site: http://dianagabaldon.com/ you'll find the info on the graphic novel.

The Outlander Series is my all time favorite books ever. I have read through them four times so far...just can't get enough of them. Each time I find something I've missed in the last reading!

message 29: by Sandy (new)

1149994 A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Diana Gabaldon at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina. Kind and soft spoken, it was the high light of my trip, mostly because it was so unexpected. She is working on Echo but don't expect anything for while. I think she said it would be finished at the beginning of '09 but then it would need to go to the editor and go through publishing etc. We may have a little wait.
I too would like to see this series on film but I do not think a movie is going to cut it; there is too much information and too many wonderful characters. I would love to see a cable channel pick it up as a mini-series...that just keeps going :) I think they would also need a huge budget in order to do it right; otherwise, why bother?

message 30: by Snowsong (new)

1022413 Oh my gosh! I LOVE these books! I take forever to read them, but love them anyway. My mom got me hooked back around Christmas, i think, but im not sure... could have been closer to the end of the school year. or closer to thebeginning. dont rememeber, just know that they are wonderful! and if they make it into a movie, it would be longer than lord of the rings, becuase there really isnt much to cut out. and they had better do it properly if they digtilize it, thats all i have to say. by the way, im a teenager, incase you all couldnt have guessed from my references to the school year. :)

message 31: by Kimberly (new)

1342853 My best friend suggested this series, and I am so glad she did! I am only about 1/3 of the way through Outlander right now, and am so glad this wonderful book (as well as the rest in the series) has quite a bit left before I am finished. I admit, it took me a while to get into it, but once Claire went back in time, I've been unable to put it down. I can't wait to get my hands on everything else she's written!

message 32: by Melissa (new)

940364 The best way I can describe how I feel about this series is I can soooo relate to the characters. Diana Gabaldon is a *genius* at developing her characters. When you pick up the Outlander series, it is like stepping back in time and watching a movie in your head. Have you ever caught yourself imagining who'd play the characters parts if they were in a movie???? I do it all the time. It has been 4 years since I read the series, I need to pick it back up and read it again. Beautiful writing, don't you all wish you were Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser????? I do!

message 33: by Sherry (new)

1294357 I have had a new experience lately, I have been listening to Outlander! I bought the audio book for my iPod and I have to say it is quite excellent!! The narrator is fantastic with the characters, they come to life! If you want a new experience with Outlander, get the audio book!!

message 34: by Romance Novel TV (new)

1538282 This is one of my all time favorite series. When I discovered Outlander, I literally didn't go to bed. I just couldn't get enough of Jaime and Claire. I will say the last book disappointed me, some of the trials and tribulations were a bit too much and went on for too many pages. But in general, this is, by far, one of my favorite series. And Outlander is on my keeper shelf.

message 35: by Fiona (new)

774274 if you go onto the Dianna Gabaldon website go into the fun section then click on the podcasts & click on rss you will hear this fantasic woman talk about an echo in the bone & a wee bit about book 8.

message 36: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Wow! Thank you for the info Fiona. That was neat.

message 37: by Beth (new)

1187159 Hello everyone! I'm a newbie to this group & love what I've read so far. My husband actually turned me on to the Outlander Series while driving through the mountains. We listened to the books on tape & I just love listening to the accents! I love historical romance when they're well written & these books are just outstanding! What a story! I only regret that Dianna Gabaldon waits soooo long before she completes the next Jaime & Claire saga! A Breath of Snow & Ashes worried me because I was afraid Ms. Gabaldon would stop writing about them!

Please don't stop Dianna! We love these characters!

message 38: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Hi Beth, welcome to the group.

Those Outlander books were something else. Neat that the audio is with accents. I didn't know that.

Have you read any of her Lord John series? I have not.

message 39: by Snowsong (new)

1022413 My mom's read some of the Lord John, and she says they're pretty good!

Hi Katherine -

I have not read any of the Lord John series. I didn't really care for his character in Outlander so I guess I haven't wanted to - so far. If others believe it's a good series then I might give it a try.

1187159 One more comment. For anyone who is having a hard time getting through ANY of the books in this series, you should REALLY try an audio book! The only book I actually "read" cover to cover was "A Breath of Snow And Ashes". We listened to all the other ones on audio so I already had the beautiful accents in my head. After I read it I bought the audio version for my hubby. I enjoyed the book but he took a while to get into it. In the end he really enjoyed it.

message 42: by Snowsong (new)

1022413 *grins* read the first.... 3? 4? i dont remember. i just dont have time to get through one of them anymore... high school gives me NO life, lol! im somewhere in the middle of Drums of Autumn at the moment, and i think im just going to leave it till summer. im not that big into audio books... i tend to tune them out easier than my teachers at school ><

message 43: by Wendy (new)

1730638 Hey everyone! I'm new here, but I'm on my 3rd go round on these books. I'm currently reading Outlander. As I read the books I find that the information is so accurate. I don't think I appreciated that the first time I read it.

After reading all of the books and going back the second and third time I find little links and precursers to other books. This seems amazing to me, she really must have thought this story through and laid out an outline for all of the books. I'm not that clever.

message 44: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Hi Wendy,

Welcome to the group. Good idea to read these a few times in order to pick up nuances that may be missed the first (or second) time through. I agree, she must have had an outline for, at least, the first three.

What part are you at in "Outlander?"

I'd like to re-read it, too, one day.

message 45: by Wendy (new)

1730638 I'm almost to the end. They just rescued Jaimie from Prison, and she just set his hand. (Pretty Gruesome)

I've been reading alot lately and didn't have much of a choice in new books (no money) so I decided to re-read the series. There is just something about Jaimie that I love....sigh. Although in my minds eye he isn't all that red headed. Being a red head myself I don't find that to be attractive.

Clair is intrigueing to me. I like that she has spunk and that she is intelligent. I would like to think we could all be so smart in those circumstances. Although I'm not that interested in the herbal part of the story, I do think it is interesting that she seems to find cures in the 1700's.

message 46: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 I remember the damage to his hand. Sure had some shocking "stuff" in that book. Didn't see "that" coming.

Are you planning to read the next one soon, too?

message 47: by Wendy (new)

1730638 Yes. I just finished Outlander this afternoon. I'll start Dragonfly tonight.

The last bit of Outlander is shocking when she saves Jaimie by conguring and then tormenting him with Randall. I had to read that section of the book several times to understand what was happening the first time around.

Was that confusing to you? I kind of got lost there for a bit. Now, re-reading it I understand much better.

The first time I read Dragonfly I thought that I may have gotten the books out of order. The first of the book is confusing, starting off after Clair has gone back to the future and is thinking of returning.

I don't remember that part. Trying to think about what she did in the end...dang! Looks like I need to re-read this "little" devil, too. :-)

Hello! Just joined this group as I just finished Outlander and I LOVE Outlander! It's been awhile since I really lost myself in a book like this that's so captivating with it's characters and setting. I'm hooked! I'm starting on Dragonfly tonight.

Hi Kathrynn! That was the part in the abbey towards the end while Jamie was recovering from his ordeal with Randall. Claire was at her wits end trying to get Jamie back to her and she went to set up the cell like it was back in the prison and repeated what Randall had said to Jamie. That was truly heartbreaking. :-(

At first I was wondering why she was putting him through that situation again when it broke him the first time. I imagined it was because she wanted him to know that he could still fight and get his spirit back. I don't know if I could have done that to him myself though even though I know why Claire did it.

message 50: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 Oh, yeah, I remember that now. She use psychology on him to get over his ordeal and show him her love--their love--was stronger. That was very touching.

Hi Rae! Welcome to the group. Enjoy "Dragonfly!"
