I like Star Trek and Star Wars. My mother and I used to watch Star Trek: TNG when it was on and I think my husband fell in love with me because on our first date we were going to watch a movie on his fathers big-screen and he had me pick the movie. I picked "First Contact." My husband likes them both as well.
But Star Wars is closer to my heart. I remember seeing Eps 4,5, and 6 in the theaters as a kid. And I love, love, love Yoda. I used to carry around a Yoda action figure everywhere. Best Muppet ever!
There are bits and pieces I like of the new ones too. I don't care who knows it but I like Jar Jar (I also loved the Ewoks so bite me hard-core SW geeks!) How could anyone not love Darth Maul (I've met Ray Park in person. He is hhhhhottttt!)? Eps 1 & 2 had great comic sequences with R2D2 and C3PO. And my best friend and I became giddy when we saw Yoda open his robe and pull out his light saber to fight Dukoo (sp?). I loved all the scenes with Yoda in Ep 2.
Ep 3 was a different story. They turned one of the most formidable Sci-Fi characters into a whiny bitch! That is unforgivable IMO. And I know someone on here said they love Natalie Portman but I can't stand her. Her breathy acting was worst in Ep 3. "Anakin, you're breaking my hhhhheahhhrt!" And I've never been pregnant but I know that a pregnant woman's belly does not expand and contract so as to fit better in a costume. There are scenes in the beginning where she looks like she's about to pop but put her in the beige jumpsuit and she's got a smaller belly right before she gives birth to two very healthy looking 5 month olds.
::gets off soapbox::
I'm with Gus on not being able to sit through the Lynch Dune. Actually got asked to leave the theater because I was disturbing other patrons with my noises of outrage. I was trying to hold it in, but apparently not so much.
I heard Robert Pattinson may be involved, but as to whether or not he'll play Paul remains to be seen.I mean, isn't Paul supposed to be a teenage boy, say, 16 or 17? Then why get a twenty-something leaning closer to 30 to play Paul? Get me a teenage actor who's all hormonal and angsty and shit to play Paul, not some pretty boy like Pattinson.
PJW, the line is not "Luke, I am your father". The line is, No, I am your father.That is one of the most misquoted lines ever, along with play it again, Sam (which Bogart does NOT say in Casablanca), the line “Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!”, and "Beam me up, Scotty", which Captain Kirk never said, anytime.
David, you and I both share a love for Dune, but I can't sit through Lynch's version without wanting to stab my eyes out. Supposedly, there will be another film version, but the fact that there's been 2 director's changes makes me worry.
no there's a better version out there.. : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0142032/and i heard there making a new one =-o i wonder how that will be..
The David Lynch version of Dune?!!! Wow, that's a first...I've never heard anyone say that before. I cannot take Sting in a diaper. Well, I cannot take Sting, period. But in a diaper...?!! Good lord!!!
im a sucker for the redemption theme in star wars though give or take if the prequels are crap the story is decent enough to make up for it, IMHO anyway.. i watched some star trek but could never get into it.. and i like Dune better then the both of them.... Muad'Dib, Muad'Dib, Muad'Dib...
STAR TREK! STAR TREK! STAR TREK!!!!!!!!!Star Wars should've never gone past the Luke Skywalker era. Hayden Christensen just wasn't good enough to carry on the franchise. **sigh** botched it.
btw nothing can beat "Luke,I am your father" for quotes most well known in moviesBut I guess in ST "Live long and prosper" would be the closest to match it
At one point I believe Jackie was considering combining both Star Trek and Star Wars into the same outfit...Jackie the Librarian...full of innovative strategies to bring disparate viewpoints together...maybe she should run for office...:)
Hey, who dressed up as Princess Leia last year? Oh, hey, that's right. It was ME.
But, Star Trek was my first love, and I'm loyal like that.
You preempted my next comment. :)I know the acting isn't spectacular, but that's not the point. The point is cool spaceships flying around and shooting the shit outta each other!! The point is Darth Vader!! The point is Chewbacca!! The point is lightsaber duel!! The point is FUN!!!
KD, the acting in the first three SW movies isn't that good, either, I'm sad to say. I didn't notice when I was a teenager, but I do now.
ST wins in special effectsbut SW beats it in cool tech stuff and plot
in summary.....
STAR WARS WILL EAT STAR TREK'S FACE!!!!! AND IT WILL BE TASTY!!!!!!!!!
Jackie: ^.^ Least Ewoks didn't speak in the middle of the night like Teddy Rupxin. Scary bear.
I think there's a Wookie backpack out there. WOOOKIEEEE! *cuddles*
TNG wise, the first season seemed to be a hodgepodge of ideas and themes but gradually it spun together well. I cannot wait to re-watch!
What's everyone's favorite fan-verse made item from either ST or SW?

Nice Sandman reference.

I think Tanja just made my case. :D

Truthfully, I thought they were a marketing ploy to lure in youths. The cartoons and movies alone are entertaining and cute. Most of the time I don't consider them as part of the SW world else it turns SW into this gushy bit of sweetness aka a Saturday Morning Cartoon ;_;
Excellent debate, gang.Sadly, I neglected to compile my synopsis for PopMatters' essay call. I'm such a failure...
Yeah, the momentum of the first ST picture was more about the event than the movie itself.Hollywood, however, has a long, long tradition of making movies influenced by factors far outside what makes a movie good. Remember, their definition of a good movie is A Movie That Makes Lots Of Money. And, most people go to see movies because someone else said it was cool, or because it panders to their lowers common denominators -- usually the ones that don't require thinking. Everyone is trying to make a movie just like the last movie that made a lot of money.
There is also the "don't offend anyone important" pressure, and who is important at any given time tends to shift around a bit. It's ok to offend the unimportant, though -- just don't offend too many of those groups because they team up.
One of the biggest things I've seen affect movies, though, is the too many chefs in the kitchen thing -- everyone wants input, everyone wants a tweak or a change. The more people who are involved, the worse the movie seems to get. Really, the best movies seem to be those that are created from a very small creative pool or even just a few people. movies by committee...blegh.
True. I don't know whether to get excited, or cringe, when I hear that a book I love is getting made into a movie.
Cringe, usually. :\
Imagine a world... where the first Star Trek movie didn't suck. It's amazing they got to make a second one, really.
But this makes it sound like it's just SF/Fantasy movies that get ruined by Hollywood, when really, 80 percent of everything is crap. At least.
