Two great choices !!
I love Poe - good excuse to go back and re-read some of his stuff. And the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been on my TRB for a long time so it will be good to get that one done for a group.

They are "prettier" than last months : )

Maybe I just missed them last month....

Valpal, I just finished Woman in White - see you on the spoiler page discussion when you're done!
I agree with Diane that it's very interesting to read all the suggestions. But darn it, I'm still reading The Woman in White! The good news is that I have already read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and it is a a truly great read. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.

Thanks Beth...this site is pretty awesome...
For those who are interested, you can search a copy of The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo in 4shared.com. :))
I love Poe's poetry. I like to read his outloud, but only alone, because I get into it and read with a lot of feeling. My oldest brother and I used to read it out loud together in trees. Those are some of my favorie childhood memories.
Hello :) My name's Jen and I just joined! Nice to meet you all! Just thought of saying hi and that I would love to join the group reads! I have The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and I also have quite a few books from Edgar Allan Poe :) Can't wait to start!
It pretty much works that we read and discuss them all month. But there's not really a cut-off date. The discussion threads will be most active the month that we read them, but they're frequently resurrected much, much later when someone else reads it and sees the discussion we had.
Hi! I'm brand new to the group, so just have a quick question... is there a time frame for finishing these books, or are do we have all of July to read and discuss? Thanks! Looking forward to reading with you all! :)
I obvioiusly love Poe. I'm the one who suggested this book. I will definitely will read this book in July. I can't wait.
I will be starting the threads on July 1st (or the night before) so we can start discussions on them. In the meantime, have fun collecting them :)
OMG! I opened Project Gutenberg and couldn't breathe. I want to scream. I think I'm blushing like an idiot who just found the love of her life and yes, I have. Ebooks!
I feel dizzy!
so excited about Poe! i think i'm going to try and do both group reads this month, they are both something i like or want to read! and best yet, i may be able to get all (or at least most) of the Poe stories from the anthologies i have laying around from college. i knew i kept them around for a reason!
i nominate THE JOHN CHEEVER SHORT STORIES. They are charming, very realistic tales of men in a by gone age. I thought of him when i heard of the commuter train wreck in dc. his characters rode many commuter trains.

Ha Dree, I can't afford my addiction either! I'll likely only be able to read the Poe short stories. Looking forward to some chilling reading while hopefully catching some July rays.
Well, I have requested the 2 EAP collections from my library that have all these stories. Yay! I have loved every one of his stories I have read, in spite of having to read Cask of Amontillado every year in high school, which turned it into an "AGAIN?!" IT's been 20-odd years for that one!I don't have much hope for getting The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo out of my queue again this month. I have started it, but got overwhelmed...and it has a HUGE queue.
I don't buy books, I can't afford to keep up with my own reading :)

The Gold-Bug,
The Murders in the Rue Morgue,
The Balloon-Hoax,
The Purloined Letter,
A Descent into the Maelström,
The Black Cat,
The Fall of the House of Usher,
The Masque of the Red Death,
The Cask of Amontillado,
The Pit and the Pendulum,
and The Tell-Tale Heart.
I'm willing to bet that every one of these stories is available for free on-line at some location such as Project Gutenberg
My library doesn't have that edition, so I will start cobbling together stories from what they have. I wonder if I can find the collection that I already own? hmmmm
Me too K, I have the complete works here, so I'm up for discussing whichever stories and/or poems we're discussing!
oh no,,, not again!
Does the title of the thread say anything about nominations? Huh? Or even voting?
Ahhhhhhh....
Diane wrote: "Category 1: "Those Who Save Us"
Category 2: Interpreter of Maladies"
Hi Diane - the voting is closed now and the winners are The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Best Short Stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
If you join in next month, you make nominations for only one category; and when you vote (one for each category) you click on the tab in the right hand side on the top here that says Polls.
This is the edition from which I picked up the above list: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18053...

I have a copy of the complete works of Poe, so if someone would be so kind as to post the short stories within this edition, that would be awesome!
Do we have an edition for Poe? I will try to get it from the library, but need to go with a slightly different one.Maybe I will even get Larsson's book out of the queue this month! Maybe.
Polls are closed.
Votes are in.
We will be reading:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson
The Best Short Stories of Edgar Allan Poe - Edgar Allan Poe
Diedre, you need to go to the polls section and vote.See message #83 : "you have to vote under the tab that says Polls. It is on the right side of the screen at the top - do you see it? Click on Polls under the heading The Next Best Book Club."
Hope this helps.
Hello, I am new, but I thought I'd vote anyway! The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie
Just wondering, if the Short Stories winner end up to be The Best Short Stories of Edgar Allan Poe, it doesn't have to be that particular edition of Poe's short stories collection right? Seeing as there are probably a lot of other editions with only slight differences.Maybe if the book ends up winning, someone can post here or in the discussion threads which short stories are in that edition. So it can be something like a guide for those reading other editions?
