1693966 Hello, my name is Heather and I am a bibliophile. It's been one day since I finished my last book and I am already on another...must slow down...

message 5: by Jaime (new)

424981 Heather,

Where is that post from last week that you started very similar to this? I couldn't find it. Anyway, I think I listed over 40, yes, 40 books that I have purchased or aquired since May 1st. Um, yeah, the day after posting that I went to a phenomenal used bookstore in a neighboring city and spent another thirty bucks on books. It's not fair! They have a .93 cent room with some really good books in it. Yes, I have a slight problem. But, I swear, it's not usually THAT bad. It's just been that kind of month-and-a-half!

message 6: by Jenny, Moderator (new)

440859 My name is Jenny and I can't control my spending :P

My new years resolution was not to buy anymore books until I finished reading the ones on my bookshelf. I must have bought a good 50! I think I lasted a month!!

message 7: by Heather (new)

1693966 I don't have a problem...I could quit anytime I want....I swear...*glazed eyes and jerky motions* I swear!

message 8: by Cecily (new)

1199525 The only book-buying sin is to buy a book with no intention of reading it - anything else is OK!

message 9: by Wanda (new)

1990904 My name is Wanda and I go bonkers for books. I will read almost any genre and that is just the start of the problem. I really need to find a store that sells only two things - 1 book I like and 1 book I don't like. That way, I will only leave the store with 1 book rather than 3.

message 10: by Heather (new)

1693966 But wanda, how do you you know you like it if you don't buy and find out first? And besides, the best thing about books is that it leads you to even more books!!

message 11: by Heather (new)

1693966 New reads (bowing head in shame)

Olive Kitteridge
The Reading Group
Ahab's Wife
The Children of Men
World's Fair
&
Love walked In

Darn darn rummage sales! How I do love and hate thee!

message 12: by Jaime (new)

424981 Ooo, oooo. Heather, let me know about Olive Kitteredge. There was a run on this book recently in my area and the local B&N kept selling out of it. I'm curious as to what the fuss was about.

message 13: by Donna (new)

2145131 3 for £5 in The Works this morning.......

My Cousin Rachel
The Scapegoat
The Birds and Other Stories

message 14: by Petra (new)

1733683 Last week, I picked up:
The Fool On The Hill by Matt Ruff
The Poet by Michael Connelly
The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl
Great Russion Short Stories edited by Paul Negri

message 15: by Heather (new)

1693966 Will do Jaime, if I ever get to it :P

message 16: by Donna (new)

2145131 Whoops!

The Remains of an Altar by Phil Rickman - free from bookmooch.com

The Invention of Everything Else by Samantha Hunt £1.99 in Borders (not very extensive) sale.

message 17: by Donna (new)

2145131
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Water for Elephants

That's 10 books in about 10 days! How many have I read in 10 days I hear you ask? ONE!

message 18: by Jaime (new)

424981 Barnes and Noble had one of their buy two get one free, plus I had a 15% off coupon on top of my 10% Member discount benefit, so I bought:

Don Quixote
The Space Between Us A Novel
Anansi Boys

message 19: by Epee (new)

1271498 I buy hardback classics of books I've read because I like the idea of one day having a 'library' in my house.

message 20: by Jaime (new)

424981 Okay. Today I was at Barnes and Noble and they have their buy two Barnes and Noble classics, get one free. They are reasonably priced (under $10.00 each for a trade paperback), so I couldn't resist. I bought:
Arabian Nights
Three Lives
Fairy Tales

message 21: by Vicky (new)

1890804 I bought some books today. Brand new books! I hardly ever do that. I won a book voucher at work so thought I'd splash out. I bought Pride and prejudice and zombies so I can join in the group read, Pop Co by Scarlett Thomas and The elegance of the hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. Yes they were on 3 for 2 at Waterstones.

message 22: by Ally (new)

2439273 My name is Ally and I am a bibliophile, this is my first confession. I have a serious Amazon habit and in the last week I have bought...

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery
The Secret of Lost Things by Sheridan Hay
Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum

I'll say 7 hail mary's right away (one for each book!)...

message 23: by Vicky (new)

1890804 ooh snap. Well one snap anyway. I also loved the Guernsey Literary...

Oh dear Heather! Never mind eh?
I only acquired one book this weekend, Eclipse, from greenmetropolis, and I sold 2 books on there so basically it doesn't count!

message 28: by Jaime (new)

424981 I volunteered today at the best local friends of the library book sale in my area. One of the advantages of volunteering is that you get first dibs on the books. They are all .50 cents to one dollar. Dangerous.

I bought:

The Buffalo Soldier
Water Witches
The Love of a Good Woman
Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World
Kafka on the Shore
The Shadow of the Wind
The White Tiger
Persuasion
Mansfield Park
Housekeeping A Novel
Oryx and Crake
The Master A Novel
North and South
Silk
The Pillars of the Earth
Bridge of Sighs
Wuthering Heights
Villette
The Amber Spyglass
The Golden Compass
Foucault's Pendulum
Drums Along the Mohawk

And about as many children's books for my son.

Bad, bad. I know! I have WAY TOO MANY books to read already!! But, alas, I am a true bibliophile!!

message 29: by Heather (new)

1693966 OMG I love love loved The Shadow of the Wind. You have GOT to read this one Jaime!

message 30: by Burgendya (new)

1843710 Yes I am totally proud to admit that I have reading addiction. I know that it is a book habbit that will never end. Or atlest I would never want to. Every time I go to the library, or a bookstore I've never leave empty handed.

My room is literally full of books. No matter what I always find space to pack more. High or low. =)~

message 31: by Jenny, Moderator (new)

440859 Wow you got some good ones there Jaime!

Thanks, Jenny! I am excited that I had so many good finds!

Heather,
Shadow of the Wind is next on my TBR. Right now I am reading The Thirteenth Tale. I am loving it. It's the best book I've read in a long time. The language is so, so rich. It's slow going, because I keep going back to re-read passages. I'm not even that far into it! So far, it reminds me of one of my favorite books of all time, Rebecca. I wish I had time to just sit down and read until I finished it. Unfortunately, this is has probably been the busiest week for me all summer. I've been volunteering for two different local events since Thursday (one of them the book sale) and today alone is my sister's thirtieth birthday, my sister-in-law-to-be's wedding shower and a huge community event in about an hour from now! Crazy, can't take it!

message 33: by Heather (new)

1693966 Oy! It sounds like you are a busy busy bee my dear! I am excited because I think I will almost maybe finish this blasted book that I am reading, and I think you have convinced me to read Rebecca next, since you and I seem to have some similar styles of reading, and I do have it on my tbr. I am glad you are liking the Thirteenth Tale. It's definately a 5* read for me and after I read it I started recommending it to everyone, along with The Shadow of the Wind. I rec'd it to a friend of mine and she just devoured it, read it in about a week, when normally books that length take her a month or so. it is amazingly good!

Let me know how Oryx and Crake goes eventually. I have been wanting to read it , but I'm just not sure.

That's how I have felt about Oryx and Crake. I've always sort of wondered about it. It was staring me right in the face at the book sale on Friday, and, for $1.00, I fugured what the heck.

I loved Rebecca. It's one of my favorite "classics". Let me know how you like it!

message 35: by Bernard (new)

When you read Sharp Objects, I'd be curious to know how you like it. I am on a waiting list for that book at the swap site I'm part of. She just came out with a new book, too. I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, though.

2512630 hi everyone.I'm mary and I'm a bookaholic - but on the cheap! I used to spend far too much time at weekend browsing at the Works and Publishers Book Clearance, but I've reformed or at least I've discovered Bookcrossing and Freecycle.A local organic shop is an official bookcrossing point, so there's generally a good choice there. Books offered on Freecycle are more of a gamble, but as I'll read almost anything it works quite well.
