2230831 Hello everyone! New here and pleased to find a club where I can get new ideas for my reading because mine have dried up!!!

The last book I read was The Wonderful Demise of Benjamin Arnold Guppy, and now I'm stumped and can't choose my next book.

What it's about: A mad old man who terrorizes his neighbours and how he gets his come-uppance.

Why I liked this book: It's dark but really funny. So I'd like something like that please. It's intelligent humour, which I like. Very little swearing and no blood and guts, which is right up my street. I'd like something that makes you think too.

So I need something really funny, dark, sarcastic, biting, that sort of thing. If it helps, I like Stephen Fry, Wilde, that sort of thing.

Cheers everyone!

Not sure if they count as satire but have you read any of Christopher Moore They are a bit supernatural but quite funny too.

2230831 Hi Donna,
I haven't read anything of his but I saw Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pala while back and was considering it. I was meaning to look it up but forgot, so thanks for bringing up Moore! Which one's the best one to start with? I like the title of You Suck A Love Story!

Lamb is good, if you are not offended by blasphemy! The first one I read was , Bloodsucking FiendsI think You Suck is the sequel to that. I wasn't too keen on Practical Demonkeeping though. Those are the only three I have read so far.

2230831 Oooh I can't decide! Bloodsucking Fiends looks good. Then I could get You Suck. It's the frozen turkey bowling that's enticing me! Yes, it's Bloodsucking Fiends. This group is great!

1693966 um...as a huge HUGE fan of Christopher Moore, I say read them all and love.... :)

I really love the Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror. I read it often around the holidays.

Nophoto-f-25x33 I'd recommend Christopher Brookmyre - esp One fine day in the Middle of the Night. He's a great Scottish writer with a fabulously dark sense of humour!

Nophoto-f-25x33 Hello Ellie: I looked at your books and I would recommend for you to read The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. It's narrated by a character named Balram who describes his life journey of rising from poverty in India. But it is so much more than this. Very dark humour, funny, and sarcastic. It won the Man Booker Prize but don't let that stop you from reading it. (The last few Man Booker Prize winners have been
somewhat disappointing). This is very deserving of the prize and I can't recommend it highly enough. Even if you don't enjoy it, you will want to discuss it and talk about it afterwards.
