If you like Highlanders I think you will love it. the first three in her series you can actually read as stand alones but 4-7 read in order
I am not able to get into the Twlight or Harry Potter either. Just not my cup of tea.
I will have to try the Karen Moning series. I like things about Highlanders
hey Jill
I have not been able to get into the whole twilight mess.I have not really seen those shows but i am going to assume you like paranormal.. I don't how much romance or anything you like but these are my favorites. they are all paranomal romance series
Highlander sereis from Karen Marie Moning they are time traveling Highlanders. good series mostly a 20th century girl some how travels back to the year 1300ish in Scotland. Magic and spells and a "dark fairy" who causes lots of trouble.
I love Sherrilyn Kenyon her dark-hunter series is my fav. its more on the greek mythology side I love that. Um dark-hunters fighting damions(vamps) Artemis/Apollo/ other gods and creatures
and then Kresley Cole she has an immortal sereis. vamps/lichans/witches and valkeries.
my other favorite is the Black dagger brotherhood from J.R. Ward Vampire warriors who all have a tortured soul.
Hi Lauren,
I read all kinds of books. It's been a while since I read sci fi. I am thinking of reading Twilight. Just so I know what the heck everyone is talking about. Keep culturally current if it were. Given my TV show interests, what would you recommend?
Jill
Hey Jill,
thanks for the welcome
I actually don't watch those. I watch the Ghost Whisperer and crazy movies on Scifi channel. I like more of the Underworld/Vanhelsing movies. I guess I like the "hollywood" versions of Vamps and demons. DO you read paranomal books?
Argh! just lost a long post! I don't have it in me right now to duplicate all....
Nathaniel hope you like 3COT as much as I did. Read DITWC in conjunction with a vacation to Chicago and think that enhanced the experience. Never would have picked it. Had it on my shelf from a book club selection I never read.
Jen, a friend of mine likes books by Charles de Lint- urban fantasy fare. You might look them over.... and welcome to BA.
Welcome Lauren. My husband and I love Paranormal State, TAPS, and Children of the Paranormal. We want to stay in a haunted hotel! lol. Do you watch those shows?
Jill
Jen -- I imagined you've gone through the Margaret George stuff? If not she'd be right up your alley, historical fiction wise. Have loads of sci-fi ideas, of all stripes, if need be.
Connie K.
Devoured Moneyball. Really liked it. I always think its funny that Mr. Lewis's wife is former MTV Newsperson Tabitha Soren. She was the (co???) moderator when someone asked Candidate Bill Clinton the infamous boxers or briefs question???
I like Feinstein, but I've had a tough time reading his stuff. But I'll always have a warm spot in my heart for using the Twain quote for a golf book; "A Good Walk Spoiled."
Jill--
Bought Three Cups of Tea yesterday.
Nathaniel.
Welcome Jen. I'm Mary. We are so glad that you find us. I used to work at our local library. It was almost not like working at all. It was great fun. I've read "Interview with the Vampires," and the "Twilight Series." I used to read Stephen King but then I couldn't sleep when I was reading his books. Anyway I just wanted to say hi.
Mary
Hello All!!!! You guessed it,I am new and thank you all for not making me feel like a freak. My library card is almost unreadable at this point. I love to collect hard back books. Classics, horror, sci fi, fantasy and true crime mostly. Was kind of stuck on Anne Rice, Steven King and James Patterson. Would love some fresh ideas. Not too much into romance. Slightly addicted to historical fiction and the Tudors at the moment but my first love would be those darn vampires. So shoot and give me all your best suggestion!!!!!
Welcome Lauren. I'm Mary. We are thrilled to have you join us. Pull up a chair and read with us. We'll be glad to help you add lots of books to your to-be-read booklist.
Mary
Hi I am new to this group here. I buy books I would say very very very often. Some times you just have to you know.
I usually hang out on the paranormal groups I love stuff by J.R. Ward,Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Kresley Cole

Nathanial - Have you read Moneyball by Michael Lewis? I'm not much of a baseball fan, but I (and my husband) loved this book. If you enjoy college basketball, John Feinstein's book - Last Dance: Behind the Scenes at the Final Four is terrific. A couple of non-sports related, non-fiction books I enjoyed recently were: the Geography of Bliss and The Monster of Florence. Connie

Shelli - The Sookie Stackhouse books are MUCH lighter than the Rice books and are very fast reads. The last one took me 2-3 days to read. Connie
Hi Mel. I didn't care as much for the last book in the "Twilight Series." It was a little too broad. You'll like Anne Rice. Everybody should read Harry Potter. The books are much better than the movies I promise.
mary
Jill I try to assimilate well.
Devil in the White City is the Erik Larson book? Many friends have shoved that book at me, and its never held my interest for more than about 100 pages.
Three Cups of Tea? I don't know, but I'll check out.
I'm fairly suggestible; the bookstore I frequent likes me that way.
Hi Nathaniel,
Have you read Three Cups of Tea or Devil in the White City? Non-fiction reads I think guys would like.
Also, Welcome to Book Addicts. Sounds like you fit right in!
Jill
Hey Mel Re: Harry Potter books.
I gotta say the first couple of books -- the ones that aren't 700+ pages read very easily, and have some charms of YA literature. I read the first book in a couple of hours at work -- it was Christmas Day. But you're right it helps to have selective amnesia. I read the fourth book after it came out in paper and well before the movie and thought "My god they're going to have to call this "Harry Potter and Kids Who Spent an Afternoon at the Movies."
My problem with the vampire thing is - its never been a thing of mine -- not even Geek God Joss Whedon/Sarah Michelle Gellar could change my mind; and now its getting harder that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and trying to cash in.
As for repetition - I've read enough Tom Clancy to be used that. Or to go way back, The Hardy Boys, but thanks for the warning.
Hi Nathaniel, yeah, I know the whole vampire phase is beginning to get a bit annoying, but once the book is good I'll read it.
Since you just picked up your first Sookie Stackhouse book, you are in for a lot of reading. I just finished the 5th book myself.
The only thing I don't like about the series is that each one can stand on its own, so there is a lot of repetition as some facts are restated over and over again. Patricia Briggs did that too for her Mercy Thompson series. But I just didn't find it as annoying then.
Hey Mary, and Shelli, yes I have read the Twilight Series, I felt the last book was a bit anticlimatic for me. I thought the other three were more interesting.
I have yet to read anything by Anne Rice, I checked the library yesterday, and they did't have Interview with the Vampire.
I haven't read the Harry Potter Books though. It's one of those things I'll get to someday. I tend to lose motivation after seeing the movie.
Hi Nathaniel. That's the pits that someone took off with the biography of Eliot. I find her to be very interesting from what I've read.

Nathaniel....I read In Cold Blood and liked it...I will probably like the ES if I ever get around to reading it....but they do freak me out. Sometimes I can't read books like that at night...I need to be at the pool or something!!!!
Shelli
Shelli --RE: Mailer. No, I've not. I've got The Naked and the Dead mocking me instead. If I'm going to try Mailer I think I'll start with a novel. The Gilmore thing would probably freak me out. I can't even get myself to read In Cold Blood.
Mary--
I used to own a biography of Eliot that I found fascinating. I think I showed it to a family member and they ran off with it, now I have no idea where it went off to.
Hi Shelli. Me too. I loved "Interview with a Vampire," but I just couldn't get The Vampire Lestat. It was too weird for me. I'm late for church. Better run.
mary
Welcome Nathiniel. I'm Mary. We are thrilled to have you join us. We have other guys that are members but they are still lurking. Thanks for be braving and posting. We have a great group here. I'm thrilled that you love "Middlemarch." I hope that you will at least join us in the discussion. No offense taken about the vampire books. They are usually not my style either. We are proud to be book addicts and welcome you to our group.

Welcome Nathaniel....Have you read The Executioner's Song? I picked it up at a used sale a few weeks ago...of course it's like 1000 pages!!!
Shelli
Hi Nathaniel here. Brand spanking new to Goodreads. Total book buying addict. Yesterday, succumbed and purchased the first Sookie Stackhouse book, but I'm quietly wondering how long this vampire thing is going to last? I was a little disappointed in browsing the Science Fiction how little non-vampire new stuff I could find.
No offense to the people who like Ms Harris or Ms. Meyers, but vampires have never really been my thing.
Casting about for a non-fiction book to read. None of my baseball books are doing it for me, and I don't think I have the concentration for the new Gabriel Garcia Marquez biography.
Middlemarch is like one of top ten favorite books, but I don't think I can read it again -- it's been more than five years.

Hi Mel...welcome...hi Mary...I read Twilight and Interview with a Vampire...I didn't finish The Vampire Lestat...I still have it....Someone else here...maybe Connie reads these and I put the first Sookie Stackhouse on my TBR list....they sound good...are they lighter than the Anne Rice books? Those are so "heavy and dark!"
Shelli
Hi Mel. Well it seems vampires are all the rage now. Did you read "The Twilight Series?" I did and actually loved the books. Now I'm 45 and when my oldest daughter asked me to try to first book I'm like I don't think so. But I was hooked from the first book. This is the same daughter that refused to read Harry Potter because she said who could believe that a cat talked. LOL! Let me know if you read "Twilight," and what you thought.
Mary
Mary:
So far the only series I am reading is the Sookie Stackhouse series. It's basically about vampires "coming out of the coffin" and other supernatural beings. I started to read it after I saw an episode of True Blood on HBO. The books are better, and each one is like a mystery.
Walmart does seem to dedicate a section to Harris and Meyers lately. I noticed they also had a young adults vampire section.
Mel
Hi Mel. Welcome to "The Book Addicts." My name is Mary. We are thrilled to have you. I work at walmart as a pharmacy tech. On my breaks I like to visit the book section. I know everyone out there is shocked by that announcement. LOL! There is a whole section of Charlaine Harris' books. I've never read any of her books. What does she write about?

See Liz. I told you we were a bad influence. Just go to the bookstore and start buying books. We'll support you when your family discovers you bought twenty books. LOL! Welcome!
mary
Hi Liz. That's the bad thing about this group. We'll make you add more books to your list. We are all going to have to retire early just so we can read all the books on our lists. I want to retire to the beach and just read all day.
Mary

Thanks for the welcome! I'm quite glad I never checked out the movie; I heard so-so reviews about it and figured it best to check out the book first =)
Hello,
I'm Mel, I have been reading more and more lately and since most of my books are either recommended or from a book list, I thought this would be a great place to get more recommendations.
Right now I am reading "Love the one you're with" by Emily Giffin and "Dead as a doornail" by Charlaine Harris
Mel
Hi, my name is Brenda. My on-line friend, Wanda, suggested that I join. I am currently reading a book called Shanghai Girls. I am not a book purchaser. I have a ton of books, and couldn't find one more place for another book. However, I take them out of the library all the time. I am anxious to see what great books you all are reading.Have a marvelous weekend.
Denise....I see you...welcome!....Post some comments...this is a nice group!....You'll like it here...Shelli
Welcome Li. We're glad you came out of the lurking shadows.
I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Thought it was funny. Movie was so so for me. why in the world this makes these All Time lists is beyond me.
I was a fun, fast read. Not earthbreaking (no pun intended, ok yes there was!) literary breakthrough.
Jill
Li
Welcome - I don't even count how many are on my to be read list. I put some on here but I have three bookshelves of books here at home that are waiting to be read. Glad you joined us

Shelli
Thanks for the kind welcomes! =)Mary -- Books to be read on my shelf...I have two of Elizabeth Gaskell's books waiting for me (Cranford and Wives and Daughters), Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Anna Gavalda's Hunting and Gathering (which I think I'm going to read next, been meaning to read it for a very long time now) and so forth. I believe I counted 19 last time I checked my TBR stack *blushes*
Hi Liz. Welcome to "The Book Addicts." Sounds like you are in the right place. My name is Mary. I live in Missouri. We are all book addicts and love it. What books do you have on your shelves to be read? I hope you'll join us in reading "Middlemarch," or "The Edge of Winter." I'm glad you stopped lurking. Your post was great by the way.

Hi everyone *waves* My name is Li and I'm from Canada. I recently joined the community as I am a massive book addict xD With summer finally here, I've started tackling my ever-expanding TBR list (which grew thanks to the craziness I went through last semester at university and to frequent trips to the bookstore more recently). But yeah, I love reading and checking out new and interesting books. Looking forward to chatting with you all! =)
(I'm also rather horrid at intro posts---I never know what to say in these posts, lol xD)
