This isn't really a movie of this month but I finally saw "The Wrestler." Mickey Rourke truly established himself as a first-rate actor in this, and the portrait of a man who can't live without the applause of the crowd and what he'll do to keep on getting it was masterful. Yes, it has a sad ending, but it gives insight into human foibles and that is what art should do.
Great film Elaine! It transcends the genre conventions and gives us a touching film whose emotional complexity is unexpected. I reviewed THE WRESTLER so my essay should be floating around this forum somewhere. Glad you liked it:)
I saw this last week and I liked it too. It was hard to watch some of the wrestling (the stapler scene -eeek!) but Mickey was so great. I felt my eyes welling up with tears more than once. He looks so different now though, even his voice is different and that made me a little sad but oh well, people change... Memorable performance by Marisa Tomei as well.
I was surprised by this movie also. I was expecting a wrestling Rocky type movie. It seems most of the sports oriented movies gravitate towards the overcoming of the odds theme. But when it got a little more complex than that I was surprised and also thought it worked very well.
Agreed, very good movie. Although I had to close my eyes during the "stapling" scene!
He was such a good hearted person. The relationship between him and his daughter really touched me.
I really enjoyed this - Rourke is great, and so is Marisa Tomei. Lots of details about the wrestling world, which is cool. Might even be better than Requiem for a Dream...
Wasn't there a thread on this already? I'll chime in again and say this was a brilliant film, it had such immediacy, you feel as if you are watching a documentary. Brilliant direction by Aronovsky, brilliant performances by O'Rourke and Tomei (who is infinitely sexy).
