How is this series....I seen it a while back and thought it might be interesting, but never read it!

1824106 OOO Jeff, I hadn't heard about the Oldham book. Is it new? I didn't find it on Goodreads. I love reading about the behind the scenes stories in the 60s/70s. I have read Bebe Buell's book, Patti ______,George Harrison/Eric Clapton's wife, etc.
I am adding this to my TBR.

Nophoto-m-25x33 & am currently re-reading Watership Down with my dear pal Darlene. Read it 38 yrs ago, so it's completely new to me now & still great. Also, reading 'Stoned' by Andrew Loog Oldham who was the Stones manager/promoter in the middle 60's. He's a dj now on Little Steven's Underground Garage on satellite radio & quite the raconteur.

Oops, sorry Sarah! I was writing about 19th Wife. Re Water for Elephants. I thought it was great. Another one of those books that bounce back & forth between past & present. I thought it was interesting that a female author wrote a book about mostly male characters & did it very well.

Hi, Sarah. Loved the Eliza Ann part of it. The Jordan/Becklynn angle didn't move me as much. Learned a lot about a subject I knew nothing about. Gave it 4 stars.

2974508 I'm nearly finished with The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult. It's certainly held my interest. Lots of twists and turns. I must be totally out of touch with 14 year-old girls though. When I was 14, I was no where near what this young lady is like or experiencing. But that was a lifetime ago... I'll probably finish it tonight.

Nophoto-f-25x33 I am reading Tales from the Dog Catcher , its a cute book and a good read. I am kind of wondering why the main character is the same name of the author. Kind of interesting never noticed that in other books. ALso interesting to read it on kindle. A good book.

1838330 Just for a quick change-of-pace, I picked up Portuguese Irregular Verbs by Alexander McCall Smith. It's humorous, but not really something I'd read a lot of. It's only 127 pages, though, so it has been a nice little breather between meatier books.

message 1174: by Mary (new)

1181579 Restoration by Rose Tremain. I've seen the movie but the book is usually better.

I keep telling my husband to try to read Water for Elephants too. He is reading The Gargoyle now and he says it's really good. I pushed it so he would try something new. He is a huge Steven King fan and rarely reads anything else.

It's the best! And I hope you'll like it if you do read it - be sure to check out the anime too, if you like anime (and the book of course), it's excellent.

Of course, since I couldn't put it down, I already finished Howl, so yesterday I started Inkheart, which is also proving to be excellent. Love a book about other books.

2459823 I just started E is for Evidence by Sue Grafton this morning. Sue Grafton has been on my list for about 10 years...and I'm just now getting around to it. I'm a little behind. LOL

1033194 I'm reading Naamah's Kiss by Jacqueline Carey right now. Thinking about what books to get for our trip to Wisconsin next week.

2140505 Heaven of Drums and I'm not enjoying it very much. It's about the Argentine Wars of Independence in the early 1800s, and I don't know enough of the history to truly understand a lot of what I'm reading. It's beautifully written; There are some gloriously descriptive paragraphs. But I feel somewhat confused about what all is happening.

I'm listening to one that I'm LOVING though: Finding Nouf. It's a really cool police procedural taking place in Saudi Arabia. The cultural detail is very rich, and so far the mystery is involving.

753947 Exams are pretty much finished, so I'm finally free to read whatever I want, and last night I started Howl's Moving Castle. Couldn't put it down, and devoured 200+ pages. Finally, around fourish in the morning I was practically falling asleep with the book in my hand, but now I'm gonna finish it!! So excited, it's great!

1166992 I'm reading Louisa May Alcott's Eight Cousins, which is proving to be a nice, heartwarming read perfect for the holiday season. Louisa May Alcott is one of my favorite authors, and she has yet to let me down!

message 1158: by Elaine (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I'm reading "A persimmon tree" by Bryce Courtenay - very well written, easy to read. Normally with his books you should only read the first in the series as the rest of the books doesn't come near the story in the first one.

message 1157: by Chana (new)

1400289 The Murder of Helen Jewitt by Patricia Cline Cohen. It looks like it would be interesting but I can't stay awake for it, falling asleep every 2 pages!

1838330 I just finished The Calligrapher's Daughter A Novel by Eugenia Kim. I recommend it for those who love historical fiction. I rated it 4 stars -- would've given it 4.5 if I could.

Now I'm starting Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, for a local bookclub read. And I'm reading a cozy mystery, Who's Sorry Now? by Jill Churchill just for some really light reading as a change of pace!

1541888 Reading a First Reads win, Home for Christmas by Andrew Greeley because it was with me and I left the book that I was reading at home on my night table - A Prayer for Owen Meany. I will have to wait until I return home for that one as I am visiting my daughters in DC for a week.

2140505 I'm listening to a GREAT audio book: Love in the Driest Season A Family Memoir -- I'm almost done with it, and would highly recommend it. (For those of you doing the Around the World challenge, this is a goodie. It takes place in Zimbabwe, it's not overly long, and it's involving.) I've also just started a review book called Beneath the Lion's Gaze A Novel, about a family caught up in the midst of the 1974 revolution in Ethiopia. I've just started it, but so far it's pretty good.

On the 6th I finished The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Here is a link to my review.

It doesn't contain spoilers, per se, but I did list a couple of quotes. I would be interested to hear what others thought about this book.

Yesterday I began reading Galore by Michael Crummey and am so hooked I don't even know why I am here typing this! LOL. Crummey is a Canadian author and Galore was nominated for the Giller Prize (big deal award) this year. I think he was robbed in not winning. Just my opinion.

:)

402486 Just finished Uglies (Uglies, #1) : When I started readin this, I thought omg, what kind of book have I got here. I heard loads of rave reviews about this book, so I thought this might help me get back to readin again. WELL, what can I say about this book. It certainly gives you an insight to what we wanted to see of kids at the age of 16 and havin operations to be made like a supermodel. I can't wait til I read more on how Tally changes and her life.

8/10 for me on this book and series so far and about to start Pretties (Uglies, #2)

210372 I finished The Things That Keep Us Here a couple days ago and have started 2 books, The Lovely Bones and Everything I Needed to Know About Being a Girl I Learned from Judy Blume. It is a compilation of short stories by various female authors and is both amusing and heartwarming.

I did exactly the same thing...decided not to see the movie after reading the book. At least not at the theater. I mightttt check it out on DVD one of these days.

1838330 I also just started Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure The True Story of a Great American Road TripHarry Truman's Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip by Matthew Algeo. After he left office, without the usual Secret Service detail or anything that comes after the US Presidency today, Harry and his wife went on a road trip. This is a non-fiction account of life in those times and what their road trip was like. So far, very interesting. He was just a guy who had been President, none of the big-shot stuff from the ex-Presidents that you see today.

message 1137: by Miss GP (new)

2140505 Thanks for the recommendation, Lynn!

BTW, if anyone's looking for a Jamaica book, The Pirate's Daughter was quite good.
