I really enjoyed The Girls, too. I loved how she wrote from each girl's perspective and how different it was for each, even though they were conjoined. I gave it 5 stars also.

2391677 Finished Russo's That Old Cape Magic.

Onto Jean Hanff Korelitz's Admission. (Entertainment Weekly gave it a good review this summer and I took a flyer.) It's about a woman who works for the Office of Admissions at Princeton. I don't know the plot!!!!

1956582 I know I said I was going to read My Enemy's Cradle next, but instead I started No Time to Wave Goodbye A Novel. Needed a kleenex by page 62.

1838330 I just finished Lark and TermiteLark and Termite by Jayne Anne Phillips. At the beginning I wasn't sure I liked it, but by the end I found it's a book I'm recommending. The story is narrated between 4 characters, each telling the same story in their own voice. Three are speaking from 1959 (Lark, Termite, and their aunt Nonie), and Termite's father from 1950 in Korea -- Leavitt's story brings this into the realm of historical fiction. The love and caring in this disfunctional family is very interesting to see unfold.

2596181 Just finished 'They Thirst'. Stephen King did the vampire thing better. Most shocking aspect? the misspellings! chilling. Up next: The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent.

message 909: by Darlene (new)

1809697 Hi Jeff!
I never read They Thirst but I loved Stephen King's Salem's Lot!
Let me know what you think of The Heretic's Daughter. It is on my TBR list and haven't gotten to it yet. Have you read The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe? I liked that one. I love books centered around the Salem Witch Trials. I think the history around the time of the Puritans is really fascinating.

I actually had an intense dislike for the book. :) Funny how we can all have such different responses to the same piece of literature.

Nophoto-f-25x33 Just finally read "The Monstrumologist" which was very, very scary. I'm now reading the first (and my first) Mo Hayder book, "Birdman," which is also scary and I can't put it down. I'm having a little problem with some of the UK slang, but have managed to figure it out with the help of the internet.

402486 From the author of THE DISCOVERY OF CHOCOLATE -- a romantic historical quest set in Renaissance Venice and China surrounding the search for ultramarine. THE COLOUR OF HEAVEN is a fictional account of a young man who travelled to what are now Afghanistan and China to discover lapis lazuli, the precious stone that when turned into ultramarine changed the history of painting -- allowing artists to abandon gold as a background and open up depth, landscape and perspective with the most beautiful shade of blue. Along the way, Paolo suffers the torments of unfulfilled love before he returns to his anxious family in Venice, where he also plays a part in the early development of lenses and spectacles!

Never thought I would like this book, as it felt different to my usual kind of genre. But I stuck with it at times, came back for more. I finally finished it today. My opinion is that its a wonderful book that takes you on a journey through love, testing the boundaries of love and what it means to be loved for who you are. A wonderful tale and I will read more of his books as well.

Hi Darlene, I'm anxious to read it myself. My wife & I lived in Salem in summer '83. Despite it's notorious history, it's a beautiful town & you can just feel the oldness of it. Have to put it in my on-deck circle, tho. Just got a book on interlibrary loan...'White Album' by Joan Didion. shouldn't take too long to read it.

2391677 To heck with the naysayers (you know who you are) I'm gonna read the new Stephen King Under the Dome!!!!

message 916: by Jeff (new)

2596181 Nathaniel wrote: "To heck with the naysayers (you know who you are) I'm gonna read the new Stephen King Under the Dome!!!!" Right on! Just put it on my request list at the local library. Should be a breeze to read at only 1034 pages!

message 917: by Miss GP (new)

2140505 1,034 pages! Jeez! I thought he got all that out of his system with The Stand/Dark Tower. Let me know what you guys think. Some of his stuff lately has been pretty silly. (The Cell? Come ON!)

I agree with that (guess that makes me a naysayer?). I loved Stephen King, and for some time, his books were all I read. But then it started getting tedious and plain silly, so I stopped. Maybe I should check out Under the Dome at the library or something. Do tell us how it is when all of you have read it!

1383279 I started listening to Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and I'm currently reading The Gift by Nora Roberts. I've also started Broken by Daniel Clay, but had to put it aside because my library loan (The Gift) came earlier then I expected.

1809697 Jeff,

I was thinking exactly what you said. You can FEEL the history in Massachusetts. We have relatives there and I love visiting. The history feels somehow alive there.. if you know what I mean.

Have you read The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion? That was a really touching book about her daughter becoming seriously ill and on life support and within a few days of that, she lost her husband to a heart attack... and all over the Christmas holiday. Anyway, the story is about her journey over that next year.It was a really good book!

753947 Reading Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories, which is very variable in quality. Some of the stories have been downright boring, which is not exactly a good quality for a ghost story to have... the one I'm currently reading, "Afterwards", seems promising enough however!

Ana, I think you should watch the movie based on Bram Stoker's book now. It's one of the best vampire movies ever. Gary Oldman is excellent in it. Perhaps you've already seen it.

1838330 I just finished 13 1/213 1/2 by Nevada Barr. This isn't one of her Anna Pigeon books, but a stand-alone. It's about the life of an eleven year old after being jailed for killing his family, his older brother, and the story of the woman who comes out of a difficult life to marry one of the brothers. This book is dark and disturbing...more about the mind of the two brothers, not really a mystery. It was very creepy, and if you like that kind of book it will be good. I, however, prefer her earlier Anna Pigeon series.

952810 I just finished Club Dead by Charlaine Harris, and I believe my lack of Eric this past month has been satisfied, lol.
I'm going to start Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, which is a nice thick book. So I'm looking forward to it.

That book is kind of funny. You either really like it or you don't. It's not my favorite Atwood, but upon a second reading, I enjoyed it a lot more.

If you liked Dracula, I highly recommend The Historian. It's not really about Dracula himself, but the tone is similar and it's a fantastic book.

I also get the first Sookie book. I still have three more books to come in the mail. I love birthdays and gift certicates to book stores. LOL!

I have read quite a few other books like this over the years. I wrote the above immediately after reading it, but as I have thought about it, she makes it a pretty good psychological thriller and though I don't always like the blood and gore part, the rest was quite good. I may even move up a star in my rating of it...
