1856301 Hi. I went to the used bookstore today. I got "Revolutionary Road," for $8. I've lost my mind because I thought I'd gotten "The World Without End." I got home and it's "Pillars of the Earth," which I already have. Those new bifocals are driving me crazy. I just spent $8 an a book I already own. Anybody like to have the book? I'll send it to you? I feel so dumb.

1990904 Target was having a great sale (Love Target!). I got A Separate Peace, The Book Thief, Memoirs of a Geisha. Separately from Target, I bought The Housekeeper and the Professor. But, SsssssH!, it's a secret; so, please don't tell my husband. When he comes up in June, we will hide the new books amongst the old ones and just say the boxes must have had unprotected book sex or something because we are not quite sure how they multiplied. Think it will work? Me, neither. He will just shake his head and put them on the U-Haul and I will, of course, think I am far smarter than he. HAHA
P.S. Mary, two copies of World Without End just means that the world will positively never end.

1856301 Hi Wanda. Jill and I read "The Book Thief." In fact I still have her book. It was so great. I promise not to tell your husband. I used to hide the new books among the old books and he never know the difference unless he saw my credit card bill. By the way that is not lying it's just not sharing everything you know. LOL! "Unprotected book sex." So funny. I'll have to use that line next time I get caught.

In the Army it's called "Need to Know" and I don't think he needs to know; do you?

message 5: by MarBear (new)

1856301 Hi Wanda. I think it could also be "classified information." I don't believe any of our hubbys' need to know about our book addict. It's better this way.

2340220 I bought Keeping Life Simple - 380 Tips and Ideas by Karen Levine and The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock. I love these little books I have about seven different ones now.

message 7: by MarBear (new)

1856301 Hi Angela. I've never heard of that book but I really need something to keep my life simple. LOL! I'llhave to look it up. You guys keep coming up with more books to add to my ever growing list.

940819 I bought "Marshmallows for Breakfast" using a Borders coupon I had. I was looking for "Murder by Family", which is going to be my F2F bookclub pick for September (I'm subbing for a member who picked it and now can't do it...she picked the book). It wasn't out in paperback yet so I HAD to buy something...LOL!

2340220 Wanda, Mary and Robin,

I tell myself when I buy books it is ok because my husband buys beer and chew so my books make up the difference although I probably spend more on books but it would be close and my habit is better than his. I have saved a lot of money this year by joining paperbackswap.com and trading my books

message 11: by Robin (new)

940819 Angela,

I, too, justify my book addiction by what my husband buys. For one he deer hunts, and the permit alone is at least one book...two if I have a coupon! The ammo, gear, etc. buys me a whole lotta books! LOL! He also likes to buy tools...$$$! I'll have to check into the paperbackswap...I've tried Bookins, and it's ok, but....!?

Hi Robin. I've never heard of those two books. You know what I have to do now? Look them up on Amazon. How is my book list ever going to shrink? I NEED TIME TO READ!

1856301 Hi Angela. My hubby is addicted to golf. He spends more on golf than I do on books. I often remind him of this little fact. LOL!

Hi Robin. I say buying books and hiding them can fall under any secret miltary code there is. What they don't know won't hurt them is my motto.

message 15: by Robin (new)

940819 I agree Mary! And most of the time my hubby doesn't know! I do try to get books from the library when I can, but I love having books waiting for me to read them too! The 'Murder by Family' is a true story of a young man who killed his mother and brother, and shot his father, but he survived. The book is written by the father. A friend wanted to read it for F2F bookclub, but is having problems with an ex and custody issues, so she's on hiatus from bookclub and I agreed to take over for this book since some members had already purchased it.

The other book just caught my eye at Borders as an easy read, and inexpensive with the very good coupon I had, so I bought it on impulse...hope I'm not disappointed!

1856301 Hi Robin. I think I just saw that story on TV the other night. Did the son get someone else to help him? This kid lived with the Dad after the murders and eventually fled to Mexico but was captured. Is it the same story? How awful for that father.

mary

message 17: by Robin (new)

940819 I'm not sure, but I do know it was featured on 20/20 or some show like that (20/20 doesn't sound right) on May 1st. A bookclubber texted me it was on...she'd stumbled upon it! I only saw just a bit. I was amazed at how forgiving the father was (at least that's all I saw of the TV story).

robin

message 18: by MarBear (new)

1856301 Hi Robin. Let me know know what the bookclub thinks of the book. I'm curious to see if it's the same story.

1561203 Hi all...I bought The Giver today at a used book store in Caseville MI where our cottage is....I wanted to get more, but was kind of pressed for time as we were going to a Mem Day Cook-out and I needed to get stuff and make a salad. I was actually looking for "Eldest" the second book in the Eragon series...I finished Eragon today and loved it and am now so bummed I can't start the second one until I either buy it or get it from the library tomorrow!!! The books are kind of like a Harry Potter...not as good, but really good...about half-way through to the end, couldn't put it down!!!

1561203 Hello groupies! I wanted to share a quick great story that happened to me today. I went to the library to return some books and get "Eldest." First, they had the book so that was good...then I went to the room where they have an on-going used book sale and there were lots of new books to look through.(Fun) Then...Mary...I found a First Edition hard cover of "Beach Music" by Pat Conroy...for a dollar!! I was so excited!! They had so many good books I've already read, that I started talking to a woman about books...we were talking about Harry Potter and Eragon and Twilight and others and she asked if I'd read "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." I said that I hadn't and she said she was going to see if the library had it for me...I said thanks! She came back in and asked if I thought I'd be there at least 10-15 minutes..and I said yes. She WENT HOME and brought me back the book!!! I was amazed and asked her how I would get it back to her...she said to pass it on when done as she loved the book! It's this beautiful hardcover!!!I kept thanking her and was like WOW...that doesn't happen....ever! I'm going to start it with my 10 yr old tonight! I thought it was very uplifting...

1561203 It's me again! The librarian also came up to me today(???crazy day) and introduced herself and asked me my name(I've seen her a thousand times over they years!)and asked if I had tried the play-aways...the what? I said! They are little audio books that you supply the headphones and a "AAA" battery and then can clean, garden, walk the dogs etc...and listen to a book!!It's awesome! If you all already know about them, then where the devil have I been???I knew about books on tape/cd, but not these...they are like an ipod book!!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!! I could actually get the house cleaned and finish a book and who could care???
HAPPY DAY....

881573 Shelli - What a fabulous day - good for you! Maybe you should play the lottery . . .

Do you rent the playaways at the library or do you purchase them somewhere else?

On the topic of books recently purchased - I just bought The Little Giant of Aberdeen County for a book club meeting this Saturday. This feels a little like school when I waited too late on a project and now have to cram. Hope hubby works late a few nights this week. :) Has anyone else here read this book?

Oh, Shelli, are you in for a treat! You can go to www.librivox.org and download books onto your iPod or MP3 player. The selection is fantastic and the narrators are pretty good. I purchased a very inexpensive MP3 player at Toys R Us (less than $20) and I have been listening to these great books while I drive back and forth to work (it's 45 minutes each way).

message 28: by Angela (new)

2340220 Shelli -

How cool that someone just gave you the book, you are right that does not happen often. My daughter's school gives out books on ipods for kids that have trouble with reading. My daughter has a reading disability - she can read but she has some type of a comprehension problem, I don't really understand the technical stuff but this is basically what it means, so this year she was able to bring home one of the books on ipod and listen and answer the questions at the same time rather than try to remember everything she read and she could follow along in the book, it really helped her a lot. Our local library also has books you can download to listen too.

On another note I just requested four Debbie Macomber books from paperbackswap.com. I will now have the complete angel series.

message 29: by MarBear (new)

1856301 Hi Shelli. How cool is that. What a wonderful lady. A first edition, hardcover of "Beach Music," for a dollar? You are so lucky. We need a get used bookstore in this stuid town. Doing the happy dance for you.

1479469 I have to wait 5 more days (Monday is a public holiday in Germany and the stores are closed) before I am allowed to buy new books. Bought myself a Britannica at the end of April and that meant no books in May but I am almost through with it. It wasn't easy for me but I managed by not going in town.

message 35: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

402486 Still nowt lol. Awaiting 2 Mooches from abroad. 1 from USA and other from Denmark.

message 36: by MarBear (new)

1856301 Hi Stef. It's tough being a book addict, isn't it? LOL! I'm lucky because where I live all the books stores are across town. I'm sure my hubby is happy about that too. What was the holiday on Monday? Do you celebrate Memorial Day?

Mary

message 37: by Stef (new)

1479469 Hi Mary,

no we don't celebrate Memorial Day but we do have more than enough other holidays. This weekend is Pentecost and since we need two holidays for one, we have Pentecost Sunday and Pentecost Monday :-)

2340220 I just bought Three Cups of Tea at Target they had it for $10 and I knew I could not get it any cheaper anywhere else

Angela

message 39: by Jill (new)

1824106 I loved Three Cups of Tea. We read it at RGG or yahoo groups. I thought it was awesome to read directly after A Thousand Pleasant Suns. I finished this book as a plane landed and the flight attendant sat down next to me telling me how much she wanted to read the book and what my opinion was compared to other recommendations. I told her I loved it and gave it to her. She was amazed, but really, I was done with it. Hope you get as much motivation of what one person with no money can do to change the world as I did! Jill

message 40: by Angela (new)

2340220 Jill,

Thanks for your thoughts on Three Cups of Tea. I am reading it in October for my online bookclub I belong to. It is not a book I would normally pick up but I try to read each book on our list to broaden my horizons so to speak.

Now the problem is figuring out when I can read them.

1856301 Hi Nathaniel. You have truely found the right book club. LOL! I've heard that "We Need to Talk About Kevin," is good. I worked at our local library for two years. One day that book come in and I read the book jacket. I don't think it's on my list of books to read. See what this club can do to you? Now I'll have to add it to the ever growing list.
