656888 West of January looks interesting!

351830 J-Lynn, I read Hero and the Crown years ago. Don't really remember it, except that I liked it. I wouldn't mind rereading it.

Nophoto-m-25x33 I would recommend at least the following SF: Steakley's Armor, Asimov's Foundation series to start.

For Fantasy, Feist's Riftwar series, L.E. Modesitt's The Sage of Recluse series, Edding's The Belgariad series, Zelazny's Amber series, Saberhagen's Lost Swords series, and Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, from the top of my head.

Oh, and Stasheff's (1) Warlock and (2) Wizard in Rhyme series.

395599 Can we add West of January by Dave Duncan? Very original sci-fi.

message 13: by J-Lynn (new)

215947 I want to throw out Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley. I have been trying to justify taking the time to reread the book. I loved it, but am super busy. It would be fun to hear other points of view about the book.

199350 Speaking of roaches, what about Naked Lunch by Burroughs?

message 11: by Kristjan, Klaatu Verada Nikto (new)

716269 I am reasonably sure that Wilson's "The Tomb" should be under fantasy.

message 10: by Nick, Hooray, I'm useful. I'm having a wonderful time. (new)

656888 I'm throwing Ringworld into the mix. Also, would Wilson's The Tomb be fantasy or sci-fi?

message 9: by Ivy (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 A guy turns into a cockroach--yeah, I'd call that fantasy. :) I'm up for Kafka. Jennifer Government sounds like fun. :)

message 8: by Meghan (new)

199350 What about Max Barry (like Jennifer Government)? I'm not sure if most of you would consider that "fluff" sci-fi?

And would Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis be considered sci-fi/fantasy?

838731 I would enjoy re-reading the Fall of the Towers, by Samuel R. Delany. Originally three novels (Out of the Dead City, The Towers of Toran, and City of a Thousand Suns), the entire collection is not too long and easily read, but definitely interesting and worth the time.

message 6: by Vicki Jean (new)

908433 kehinde, that sounds fantastic!

Nophoto-f-25x33 I'd like to suggest Annihilation by Jane Lebak for fantasy. It's available for free at Mindflights.com (their first attempt at publishing a serialized novel) or at Amazon in paperback. It's a war between angels and demons and it's a tense story. The author said her goal was to keep the tension going as long as she could and she succeeded. It's brilliant.

message 4: by Vicki Jean (new)

908433 for those of you that like their stories long, may I suggest "Sword of Shadows" series by JV Jones.3 books are available now.No need to hurry in your acquisition of these books she seems to take her time gettimg them out! Dark story line.Fantasy

message 3: by Rindis (new)

145461 Note: The Pride of Chanur and The Warrior's Apprentice are both SF, not Fantasy. (Technically, The Gate of Ivrel is also SF, but it's SF thouroughly disguised as Fantasy--and should stay where it is.)

Suggested book for Jennifer Roberson: Sword-Dancer

message 2: by Diane (new)

804902 i would like to recommend angels and demons by dan brown for the sci-fi section as i am about to start it and having read the rest of his books it reckon its going to be a brilliant read .. are you interested in adding this one ?
