Books On Your To-Be-Read List >
Books, Books and More Books!
*A Picture of Guilt by Libby Fischer Hellmann ...excellent writer...you should check out her Shot to Die For. Which I just read and will report on soon.
*Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder and *Strawberry Shortcake Murder both by Joanne Fluke
*An Innocent Man by John Grisham
*I want to finish 100 Years of Solitude
*I also have here We Were the Mulvaney's and The Poisonwood Bible to read someday.
Self help books I have here to read:
*The Secret
*Eat Pray Love
*A New Earth
*Purpose Driven Life
*It's my Pleasure
*Simple Abundance
I love Billie Letts Books...I think I have all of hers read and I like Elizabeth Berg books. I need to catch up on hers.
I see I need to update my book lists here. It is pretty sad, my to read list. Also, my TO READ pile has gotten smaller as I have read a book a month since last July. That is very exciting for me!
I need some new fresh books!
Thanx for this question Mary! It is fun!

Hi Loren...I have read everything John Grisham has written and always like his books...I couldn't finish An Innocent Man...it was really tedious for me....?
I thought about staying quiet, but as you see I'm not going to!LOL...I see you have Eat, Pray, Love on your self-help to-read list....I realize I've only known you a short while and only on-line...but I can tell you that you seem smart, funny, well-grounded, fun and together and you DO NOT need this woman's help in any way!!! She is a completely self-absorbed whiner...with a lot of money...boo hoo she decided she didn't love her husband anymore and dumped him and had to give him ALL her money...but then she got it right back and traveled the world to get over her depression!(I think she needs to get over herself!)
Of course, this is only one opinion(mine)and you may enjoy it...I guess parts were funny and the descriptions of Italy nice, but this woman needs YOUR help...not the other way around!!!!
On another note...love Billie Letts!
Sorry about the venting...TGIF!

Shelli,
You are my new bestest friend!!! No time to comment further but I will tomorrow. Too funny...speak all you want!!! You are making me laugh today! Thanx. I will take your advice!
Loren 8^)
Shelli- You HAVE to read The Book Theif asap! I ust finished Shadow of the Wind and really liked it. A Thousand Splendid Suns is good and really good followed up with Three Cups of Tea which is a true story about that area of Northern Pakistan/Afghanistan and the people there. Nature Girl is total fluff. It was a little goofy for me, but it's a good light beach read. The others, I don't know....
Jill
I am reading what is on hand before I buy another book we aren't reading together.
Eat, Pray, Love: gift that a friend really wants me to read.
Cities of the Plain- last of the trilogy from Cormac McCarthy.
100 Years of Solitude.
The Hummingbird's Daughter.
off the top of my head.... who knows what else is hiding around here...
Jill
Jill,
I will read 100 Yrs of Solitude with you. I am half way. I can probably read the rest in the same time you read the entire book. I will not be reading the summer book (after my June book with the group) with the group. (too long for me to be tied down to one book!) Let me know if you want to do that this summer.
You will want to print off all of Oprah's info if it is still at her site. It was extremely helpful and still confusing. If not I have it and can send it to you.
Loren
Yes, we can read it. Let me look at my book plan as layed out and we can talk about the dates after we finish your selection.
Yaya
I have a lot of books on to read list too. But here is my short listThe White Tiger
Tsotsi
The Piano Tuner
The Gargoyle
The Great Man
The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao
The Book Thief
The Big Rock Candy Mountain
Sharon
Hi Sharon. Have you read "The Pianist?" It's a must read. It made me cry. The "The Book Thief," is one of my all-time favorites. Have some kleenexs ready when reading that one.
mary
I have a lot of books on my TBR list but here's a couple that are at the top of the list at the moment:- Anna Gavalda’s Hunting and Gathering
- Brian Ruckley’s Bloodheir
- Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities
- Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar
- J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun
- Byron Ayanoglu’s Crete on the Half Shell
- Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: A Trilogy of Four
- Elizabeth Gaskall’s Wives and Daughters
- Elizabeth Gaskall’s Cranford
:)
I have far too many books on my TBR and I am unable to say which is at the top and which at the bottom. that changes all the time due to my mood. I have to be in the mood for a book to read it. The Pillars of the Earth had to wait almost 15 years before I finally read it. Okay I regret that I haven't read it earlier because it was really great but 1200 pages are a lot and I never felt like I had time for themStef
These are the books on my list for immediate reads as I belong to an online book club and this is our list of books for the rest of the year, plus a couple of my own.
Trading Up by Candice Bushnell
True Adventures of the Hunt Sister by Elisabeth Robinson
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
Summer on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber
Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella
The Snow Bride by Debbie Macomber
The Christmas Basket by Debbie Macomber
Angela
Hi Angela,
I loved both of these books. They moved onto the ever changing fav list.
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen
Jill
Thanks for your opinion Jill.
Three Cups of Tea is definately a book I would not normally read so I hope I like it. I am trying to be open minded about it.
Angela
You will learn a lot about the Northern Pakistani people and their poverty and good spirits. It's more than the story of a guy doing an admirable thing. But it's that too!
Has anyone read American Gods by Neil Gaiman? I keep seeing it at the used book sale and wonder if I should try it...

Here is the thing that I absolutely love about places like this; the different opinions on books! I loved Eat, Pray Love. I didn't see it as her being self absorbed at all. Because she was a journalist, this was her way of healing herself from an unhappy situation. I did realize, while reading this, that very few women would EVER be able to drop out of life to try to find themselves, etc...

This quote was to Loren(to all concerned)and yes we all have different opinions, which is great, and on this book I stand behind mine! Glad you liked it Pam. Glad I didn't pay for it!
Shelli
Books to read:I gotta try Ian Rankin, Joel Shepherd, Laura Lippman, Elizabeth George and David Baldacci at some point.
More specifically
A Drifting Life - Yoshihiro Tatsumi (Graphic Novel)
Memories of Ice - Steven Erikson (Fantasy)
Edith Wharton -Hermoine Lee (Third attempt)
Admission - Jean Korelitz
Connie Mack and The Early Years - Norman Macht III
Oh there is probably more.

Shelli"
Hi Shelli - American Gods was one of my favorite books. Neil Gaiman has a unique way of looking at things that I find very appealing, and this is far and away one of his better efforts (only slightly behind its sequel, Anansi Boys). It's one of the few books I've read twice.
I just got my first free book from Goodreads, Fragment, by Warren Fahy, so I feel obligated to get that one out of the way. High on my list are two that are just coming out: Carlo Ruiz Zafon's new book, The Angels' Game, and Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Played with Fire, the sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

From the NY Times Book Review -- According to them James Patterson holds the record for most books on their bestseller list at 45 (this counts the books authored by him and those he co-authored).
And the record will grow because "Swimsuit" with Maxine Paetro comes out later this month. (His third book this year; I don't think I've written six emails all year, and he's written three books???)
Also Carlos Ruiz Zafon has a new book coming out Tuesday -- Angel's Game. He had a full page ad in the Review. Plan your shopping accordingly.
Any chance its about the Los Angeles Angels???
Sorry, bad joke.
Well, I actually have alot of books on my TBR list...here are just the ones I'm trying to get through first...
1. A Tale of Two Cities---started it but just couldn't finish it...I'll read it maybe sometime in the future
2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo---started it & so far so good
3. A Prayer for Owen Meany---also just started it & I'm really enjoying it...love John Irving
4. The Portrait of a Lady
5. Anna Karenina
6. Angels & Demons
7. Are You There Vodka its Me Chelsea
8. Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained
To finish all these books will be a challenge for me because I'm a super slow reader & busy with work & school...so well see...
the books on my To-Be-Read-List are not in any order.
but it's basiclly:
The Prince
The Historian
Interview with a Vampire
extremely loud and incredibly close
The memory keepers daughter
North and South (series)
silas Marner
journey to the center of the earth
there's lots more that's just the pile I have on my night stand right now

I've got two friends who are reading Zafon's latest, and both are enjoying it. It's high on my to be read list.

Ingrid, Yeah I've always wanted to read Interview with a Vampire (love the movie) and just never have. Twilight got me on a vampire kick so now I finally bought the book and look forward to reading it.

Hi Ingrid and Lacy...I read InterviewWAV and really liked it, so impulsively I went out and bought the next four books...I didn't finish The Vampire Lestat...the second one...it was so dark and dismal...maybe someday I'll try again....I'm reading Dead Until Dark(Sookie Stackhouse)right now and really like it, not so dark!!!
Shelli...
I did read the Twilight series...and I agree..it got me started on the vampire thing!

Lacy...let me know what you think...a lot of people liked it. I just kept thinking...this would never happen...or how could this happen...I don't know, the whole premise bothered me and although I read the whole thing, I didn't enjoy it much!
Shelli
shelli, will do it's next on my list right after extremely loud and incredibly close so I should start it probably on monday.
shelli and Sharon,
Please read The Book Thief. It is fantastic. It is one of my three favorite books.
shelli,
I also have The Shadow of the Wind on my TBR list. I nominated it, so maybe we can all read it together.
Randi
The book thief was such a surprise book, but it is amazing, do not be put off by the ww2 theme!I am going to make a point of reading "perfume" , it has been sitting on my pile for over a year, also I am going to pick up "Lady Chatterley's Lover", "Mansfield Park". And I am really looking forward to sinking into the Simone De Beauvoir and Jean Paul Satre biography "Dangerous Liaison" and Charlie Chaplins auto!!!
Ohhhhh going to be so goooooddddddd!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Randi and Linsay. Welcome to "The Book Addicts." I'm Mary. "The Book Thief," is one of my all-time favorite books. It's not at all what you would think a WW2 book would be like. I laughed and cried. I can't recommend reading it enough. What are some of your favorite books?
Mary

Hi Randi...welcome!I want to read both those books...I saw The Book Thief at Costco...didn't buy it, then when I went back to get it, it was gone...I'll bring them up in my other club too!
Shelli
Hey Mary Yeah I know, I am also pushing the book thief on people. My favourite books would have to be, The Adventures of Kavailer and Clay. Captain Correlli's Mandolin, and I cannot forgot Pride and Prejudice and To Kill a Mockingbird. I have read these books multiple times and they still make my spin shiver. Always a good way of telling a good book :)
What are you reading Mary?
Lindsay
I am excited to see The Book Thief mentioned so many times! My copy is being shipped to me as I type!... I can hardly wait!! Also noticed the book Three Cups of Tea being recommended, that is another one I plan to read soon. I see there are 2 versions of it, an adult version and a younger version, they both look like good reads!
Val, IMO Three Cups of Tea is a great story, truly amazing, but not great writing. Frankly, I'd have loved it had it been written by Jon Krakauer (or anyone who writes really well), but I think I gave it a 4 of 5 because of the writing.
Maggie wrote: "Val, IMO Three Cups of Tea is a great story, truly amazing, but not great writing. Frankly, I'd have loved it had it been written by Jon Krakauer (or anyone who writes really well), but I think I ..."
Totally agree, Maggie. I gave it the same rating for the same reason. It's such a great story -- why didn't they find someone who could write? (It's not really that bad... it just could have been so much better, in my opinion.)
