803318 It was District 1. pg. 233

message 46: by Kieryn (new)

2618396 (kinda spoiler. not really.) Actually I think it was the district one guy...I'll have to reread. I know what you mean Naomi :)

message 45: by Naomi (new)

803318 I remember now. I had just re-read it.

message 44: by Carly (new)

2044388 (Spoiler)

A guy from district 10 (i think it was district 10) speared her so sad :(

message 43: by Naomi (new)

803318 Ok. that's an exaggeration, but still.

message 42: by Naomi (new)

803318 I didn't. Which is really strange. I usually cry all the time while reading books.

message 41: by Kieryn (new)

2618396 (spoiler too)

I cried so hard during that part!

message 40: by Naomi (new)

803318 I'm re-reading The Hunger Games but I'll finish it tonight, and it's still ages until Catching Fire comes out. *sighs* Oh well. But I'm glad I'm reading it again. For instance

SPOILER!

I had forgotten how Rue died. I had just remembered that she died. not how. It was so sad!

2381120 I can't wait! It's driving me nuts!

message 38: by Kieryn (new)

2618396 You'll love it!! My friend lent me an ARC. I agree with Claire...it was pretty great in terms of mistakes and stuff!

2381120 I just went to my local library's book club meeting, and when we were trying to figure out what book to read next, the librarian brought in the cart with books that haven't been put on the shelf yet, and there was an ARC in it!

I only had a chance to read part of the second chapter, but it was so good! I can't wait to read the rest!!

message 36: by Claire (new)

2588429 my sister's friend

message 35: by Carly (new)

2044388 how did you get them

message 34: by Claire (new)

2588429 Only a couple spelling mistakes.

message 33: by Claire (new)

2588429 I have an ARC of the next book.

message 32: by Kieryn (new)

2618396 ARCs are the same size as the published book-- somehow I was lucky and got to read an ARC of both books in the series, and each was very similar to its published counterpart when it was released (except they were paperback instead of hardback).

message 31: by Carly (new)

2044388 i know but they get to read it so much sonner (but i do pity them because then they have to wait)

message 30: by Naomi (new)

803318 I'd rather have the actual book. ARCs aren't edited, and aren't even on really good paper. besides the fact that they're usually about half the size of the published book.

2324085 For the book.
But only cuz I really don't understand this ARC thing.

message 28: by Carly (new)

2044388 I know

message 27: by Naomi (new)

803318 ...waiting is boring.

message 26: by Carly (new)

2044388 for what

2324085 I'd rather just wait.

message 24: by Naomi (new)

803318 oooh! lucky! though I usually get books and money. yays!

message 23: by Carly (new)

2044388 for birthdays and stuff

message 22: by Naomi (new)

803318 as in...?

message 21: by Carly (new)

2044388 I mostly get cash anyway

message 20: by Naomi (new)

803318 lols. yep. xD

message 19: by Carly (new)

2044388 excelent point

message 18: by Naomi (new)

803318 thats why I have birthdays and Christmas. xD

message 17: by Carly (new)

2044388 I know that ls why I enter giveaways

message 16: by Kitti (new)

2342391 i want a free book....

message 15: by Carly (new)

2044388 right sorry that's what I thought

message 14: by Naomi (new)

803318 It says earlier, I think it's Advanced Reader's Copy.

message 13: by Carly (new)

2044388 what does ARC stand for

2324085 Yeah, same here. Are there conferences everywhere, or in like one place?

message 11: by Naomi (new)

803318 interesting. sounds pretty hard though, if your still a teen like me. I think I'll just wait till the books come out. xD

ARCs/Galleys/whatever you want to call them are usually given out to book industry people either by direct mail or at industry conferences like Book Expo or the American Library Association conference. If you can attend either of those conferences there are free books galore (especially ALA).

From some editorial blogs I've read, it sounds like a lot of bloggers are also getting pretty brazen about asking publishers directly for specific ARCs. Sounds like the results have been hit or miss so far - some publishers (or maybe just certain editors at some publishers) are eager to get the books into the hands of whoever wants to read them. Other publishers want nothing to do with the untested medium of blogs, or will only send them to blogs with a demonstrably large reader base.

803318 I got a pre-published copy (that's what we call them) of Fablehaven because my mom proofread it, and she wanted me to have it for my birthday. (It came out after my birthday) So that's a good question, how do you get them if your not a proofreader or editor?

2324085 i was wondering about what an ARC was too.
how do we do it, or something? join...subscribe... idk

message 7: by Olivia (new)

2208716 my friend's mom gets books early like that!

message 6: by elissa (new)

395578 If you've never heard of one, there's no reason to feel retarded! It's an Advanced Reader Copy, and publishers put them out for books that haven't come out yet, so reviewers can review them beforehand, and to create "buzz" about an upcoming book. They're also sometimes called "bound galleys" or "uncorrected proofs".

message 5: by Kyle (new)

2183713 Okay I feel retarded but what is an ARC?

message 4: by elissa (new)

395578 A contest where, Seth? At the publisher's website?

message 3: by Seth (new)

1379900 You can also enter a contest to get an ARC

message 2: by Angela (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Last I heard (and this was several months ago, so something new could have come along), the ARC was going to debut at Book Expo America later this month in New York.

message 1: by Lauren (new)

1508168 I heard the catching fire ARCs were being given out this month. Anyone in the publishing industry that's heard about this?
