613341 It's almost here! What are our plans? Do we want to gather somewhere together? We can do something at our house if you want.

2404478 I'm the most excited for the Ebook/Digital reading discussion at the festival, anyone else going to that one??

message 88: by Kristin (new)

2577083 Yeah. :) I'm so excited. I haven't been there since I studied abroad.

message 87: by Holli (new)

622853 Europe? That's awesome!!!!

message 86: by Kristin (new)

2577083 Well that's not cool at all. I think i fell behind on my GoodReads groups for a little bit. School got crazy! And I'm going to Europe in November, so I'm trying to get ahead. Well, crap. That stinks.

613341 BUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

message 84: by Holli (last edited Oct 15, 2009 05:15AM) (new)

622853 I know I would have! My boyfriend made plans for us to see a friend of ours in Ft Worth without thinking about me going to the book festival and its becoming an issue to change the plans with everyone. I just decided it would be easier to go to Ft. Worth.... :)

message 83: by Kirstin (new)

2134775 Im sorry you cant go Holli. It would have been cool to hear about it, and I'm sure you would have had a nice time.

message 82: by Holli (new)

622853 I'm not going to be able to attend the festival either... I had some things come up and its just not going to be possible for me to do them all. I wish I could though!

message 81: by Holli (new)

622853 I just moved from Columbus Kirstin and they sometimes have signings there.... go to www.booktours.com and sign up for their email newsletter for your area that info! :)

message 80: by Kirstin (new)

2134775 I so envy you Holli. I loved The Heretics Daughter and would have loved to have gone to Kathleen Kent's book signing. I wish we had something like that here in Ohio. Havent ever seen one though.

message 79: by Stacy (new)

1692287 I am not going to be able to go after all. My finances have been stretched by some additional expenses I wasn't expecting.

I hope you have a good time! Maybe I'll meet you next time, or see you in Houston sometime.

message 78: by Wild for Wilde (new)

2404478 I live in Austin and look forward to the book festival every year! There are going to be some great speakers and authors, I'm so excited!!

834245 Leslie, I hope she'll make a quick recovery!

Ugh, I'm so jealous! With Halloween that weekend and we're supposed to be (now just may be) going away the following weekend, the fact that I cannot live through a flight that long by myself (I don't do flying well) and having to watch our pennies with Hubby being laid off, I have to count myself out on this one. Maybe next year.

Meg, there's a 1 day Self Publishing Book Expo in Manhattan on Sat 11/7! If we're not going away (looks less & less likely), I can definitely make it! I started a thread about it.

message 75: by Emily (new)

613341 Oh man, sounds like my grandpa. I hope that she heals quickly and follows directions for her own good!

message 74: by Leslie (new)

1017061 I wanted to go but Mom fell down the other week and had to have her hip replacement redone (also broke her thigh bone). I could have told her that housework was dangerous to ones' health. Of course she was sneaking in cleaning before the cleaning lady came by...waited till I left for work & my step dad got into the shower to do it! So she has another 12 weeks of being an invalid (longer if she keeps the rate she is doing on following orders)

message 73: by Cindy (new)

365038 All I can say is you guys better take a bunch of pictures!! Can't wait to hear all about it!

message 72: by Holli (new)

622853 I sent Tera a message about that very exact thing Lori so once we get the details worked out we will post those here so we can all start making travel plans. I wanted to ask if this is an accurate list of who is coming for sure?

Tera
Emily
Holli
Lori
Stacy
Kristin

message 71: by Lori (new)

1769862 Well, I am still just bubbly over Bryan Burrough being there. I want to go ahead and ask (and if feels like a dumb question to be asking now) but what are we doing in Austin? I know we're planning on having a big get together somewhere, but what all else? I keep explaining to my mom that the book festival is really an excuse for all of us to meet up, but I don't really know what we're doing...

message 70: by Holli (new)

622853 After doing some searching today i found this to share with you all about the Texas Book Festival....

Headlining authors include Buzz Aldrin, Margaret
Atwood, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Bryan Burrough, Jeanette Walls, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Taylor
Branch.

This year’s list of 210 participating writers reflects
the best books in categories ranging from literary fiction to lifestyle titles such as travel and
cookbooks. There will be panel conversations mixing the industry’s top writers with audience
question and answer sessions during every event. In addition, Festival attendees can get their
books signed by authors, feast on food from a wide-range of top local eateries, inspire their
children with educational author events and activities as well as enjoy live musical
entertainment.

Incredible writers such as Sandra Brown, Oscar Casares, Kurt Eichenwald, Blake Bailey, Colson
Whitehead, David Wroblewski, and Amanda Eyre Ward will appear at this year’s Festival.

Other prominent authors attending are Luis Alberto Urrea, Jane Smiley, Harold Evans, Kati Marton,
Julia Glass, Gail Collins, and Harold Kushner.
News and political junkies will enjoy Douglas Brinkley, Howard Campbell, Bryan Carlile, and Dave
Cullen.

Cooking enthusiasts will be inspired by authors Rebecca Rather, Lidia Bastianich, Ellie
Krieger, and Guiliano Hazan, who will be demonstrating their skills and talking about their new
cookbooks.

Lovers of all things Texan will be drawn to Jane Clements Monday, Gary Clark, Wyatt McSpadden, and Michael Marvins. Dr. Cara Natterson and Po Bronson dispense current views on child-rearing, while Katherine Brooks helps those looking to map their career.

Hollywood enthusiasts can hear from three Texans who made it big working in the City of
Angels: Robert Hinkle, Billy Taylor, and Gary Kent.

772262 That is sounding good. Let me take a look at plane fares

message 68: by Holli (new)

622853 Meg, why dont you plan on coming? Fly into Dallas and stay with me a night and we will drive down together. it would be fun and Lori may do that too so the three of us would have a grand time together....... if that sounds like something you want to do (both of you) i will email you what im thinking travel plan wise.

message 67: by Lori (new)

1769862 Oh and I'll be there.

message 66: by Lori (new)

1769862 Meg, You need to come. A change in geography (not to mention culture) will be good for your soul.

message 65: by Meg (new)

772262 I can't commit until October. If my life gets straightened out I want to come.

message 64: by Holli (new)

622853 Thanks for asking that Emily, I was just about to do that! I would like to see who is coming to the festival for sure so we can start to plan what we want to do and how we want this to go. Can you let us know if you are thinking about coming? We would like to have us all get together for lunch so we can sit and chat..... I think it will be fun!!

message 63: by Kristin (new)

2577083 I'm most definitely coming, but I only live an hour away. :)

message 62: by Emily (new)

613341 Yay yay yay...it's almost here! Who is coming for sure? Does anyone need a place to stay? We can accomodate someone.

1692287 Tera, I agree--Columbine was a fantastic book!

message 56: by Tera (new)

767086 David Cullen the author of Columbine will be there. I just finished it last night and WOW.

message 55: by Lori (new)

1769862 Really? I lose my breath at certain places when I read it. I'm not quite finished with Public Enemies America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34 but I think if I didn't have anything else that I had to do, I'd happily sit and just read it. But I guess that sort of commentary belongs in another thread...

message 54: by Kristin (new)

2577083 *lol* I'm having a tough time getting through Mr. Burroughs's book.

message 53: by Lori (new)

1769862 OH MY GOD! BRYAN BURROUGHS IS GONNA BE THERE! HIS BOOK INSPIRED ME TO DO MY THESIS OVER BONNIE AND CLYDE! (I'm a wee bit excited)

message 52: by Holli (new)

message 50: by Emily (new)

613341 Oh yes, I drive up to Dallas about once a month, so I've driven through Temple many, many times! You are very close to us!

message 49: by Holli (new)

622853 That's so cool Kristin.... I can't wait to meet everyone!!

message 48: by Kristin (new)

2577083 Temple. Between Waco and Austin.

message 47: by Emily (new)

613341 Yay Kristin! Where are you? Tera and I are in Leander - just about a half hour north of Austin. I can't wait to get together with everyone!

message 46: by Kristin (new)

2577083 You guys... seriously... just made my day. I live just 45 minutes away from Austin. I *WILL* be there. :) YAY!

message 44: by Lydia (new)

1331593 OOOOOOOOOOOOOO - I wanna go! Just don't know what will be up with me. This sounds so wonderful!

message 43: by Jcwillis53 (new)

2019678 honey, all of my vendors think I'm a witch...sometimes I'm the good one and sometimes the bad...just depends on what they want!I do have my moments...ha. My husband tells everyone we know to never, ever get on my bad list! That it will be painful if they do and I just shrug, smile and let them wonder??!

message 42: by Lisa (new)

1866026 Jcwillis53 wrote: "I will watch for the website posting and let you know closer to the actual date if I can get there. I live in NW Arkansas ( right outside Bentonville) so will have to fly ( will see if my broom can..."

You have a broom, too?! In my family I'm called 'The Wicked Witch of the West'--my sister lives east of me in town and she's 'The Wicked Witch of the East.' Every time 'The Wizard of Oz' is on, I call her as soon as the house lands on 'her' and she calls me when 'I'm' melting.
