299646 captain, there's SPOILERS pouring down on us and we've just lost our main thrusters!

i saw this tonight as a friend of mine and i were in the mood for some entertainment. if viewed this way, the movie is pretty satisfying. it's not going to change anyone's life, that's for sure, but i liked that the new film retains some of the tongue in cheek humor of the original tv show. i wasn't expecting it to be just like the tv show....that would have been ridiculous to strive for at this point.

instead, there's a feeling here that some producer said, "hey, we should revitalize star trek in the way that casino royal revitalized the bond franchise a few years ago!"

but for the most part, it works. everything looks really good - there are rich colors and the design elements are nice. the acting is as good as it needs to be, and the romulan renegades make for nice villians. there are definitely points where you have to suspend lots of belief, even for star trek, but again - hey, everything LOOKS GOOD, so what's the bother?

director jj abrahms uses the original characters' personality constructs to prop up convention and ocassionally play with it. that's where the bulk of the humor comes from in this newest offering. james t kirk can take a punch and keep on coming, uhura continues to balances intelligence and beauty but this time around she has her eyes on spock (much to kirk's chagrin). mc coy grumbles with familiar beligerance, mr sulu has brushed up on his martial arts skills, young checkov's accent is thicker than ever, and mr scott is the ever-loving loose-jawed scotsman tempting the ship to surpass its structural limitations.

i was a bit annoyed at how obvious the set up in the end hails an onslaught of sequels to come, but hey - there's another hollywood tradition in the mix, and again, the film kind of pokes fun at itself in the final frames as it prepares to launch into space with none other than leonard nimoy doing the familiar voice-over.

did i mention the film looks good?

has anyone else on this list seen it? thoughts? jeers? knee-jerk assaults? praises?

243419 I agree all around. ok, maybe Kirk was a bit too much the bad biker boy, but he was never my favorite character anyway, much less a sacred icon. It's a very credible addition to the Star Trek movie list, far better than the original Star Trek one. The Romulans make great enemies, lots of great actions scenes, the right amount of humor, and a very strong cast all in all. Let's hope they continue to venture forth.

1008237 I was a bit put off by the "alternative timeline" thing, but it serves as a useful device for the fans expecting things to look exactly like the 1960's TV series.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
my biggest shock and disappointment was watching
Vulcan get destroyed. Having watched Star Trek for years, I kept telling myself they would somehow fix this with some sort of going back in time to fix this scenario. Instead at the very end of the movie, we see the older Spock speaking to the younger Spock about already having found a suitable colony for the 10,000 survivors of Vulcan.

The Spock Uhura romance was interesting, it didnt bother me at all. Somehow I always thought Kirk was a few years older than his crew, I never really thought of them as all being in Star Fleet academy at the same time.

But I did like the interaction among the main characters, especially the early friendship between Kirk and McCoy. It would have been nice to see young Spock making a friendship with Kirk on his own and not because the older Spock tells him it is something worth pursuing.

It was all a little too tooooooo obvious that they are already set for the next chapter in the franchise.

1345249 I actually really it. I thought Zachary Quinto was great as Spock, as was Simon Pegg as Scotty.

I really liked the romance between Uhura and Spock. I certainly wasn't expecting it, but it in no way seemed forced or contrived. The scene in the turbolift was my favorite scene, and I'm not much of a romance person.

I thought the Romulan ship was really cool and Eric Bana did a great job as the bad guy.

I got a kick out of all the in jokes, such as Chekov having problems making the computer understand him because of his V's (I kept waiting for him to say "nuclear wessles") and the fact that the guy who went down with Kirk and Sulu to shut off the drill was wearing a red suit and promptly got killed.

I thought the ice planet was kinda funny, mainly because I half expected Han Solo and a Taun-Taun to come riding through.

I was pretty disturbed when Vulcan was destroyed, but at least they didn't pull any tricks in order to bring it back in the end.

The action was great and the actors did a really good (and, I thought, quite respectful) job of portraying such iconic characters. Though I am slightly disturbed that I now think Spock (at least this Spock) is cute. ;)

Overall, I'd totally go see it again. It was just a whole lot of fun (and there was a tribble!)

299646 omg, of course that was eric bana as the romulan captain. i kept thinking, "i know that guy, who is that actor???"

it's kind of funny to hear trekkies talking about how it's different from the tv show, like that's some big surprise. why would you make a film that is exactly like something else? if this film is going to have new life, there's going to have to be variations and new ideas.

1008237 well it will be interesting to see what they make of this version of the Star Trek Universe. It still really bugs me about Vulcan.

One thing that has been consistent through out the TV series and movies, is that they respect what came before them, regarding character development, timeline and trek folklore and traditions.

I greatly enjoyed this latest movie, and yes Im a sucker for wanting to know what happens next.
Kudos for picking a lively and interesting cast, I especially like the new younger vulnerable Spock.

Supposedly Leonard Nimoy had the approval rights on who ever was going to play Spock.

1396160 I loved the movie and agree with Jill on almost everything. The turbo lift scene was my favorite too. My biggest problem, was the scene between Uhura and Spock on the transporter. Alternate timeline or not, Spock would not have allowed a public display! I mean, with the turbo lift, Uhura knew enough to follow him in, discreetly, and then stop it. It wasn't public. I can't buy that transporter scene.

That's nitpicking. Otherwise, if they have to stick with the timeline they've created, I can accept that. I DO mourn the loss of Vulcan, though, like Manuel.

1008237 Ive been in agony wanting to discus it with my friends, but not everyone has seen the film yet and I didnt want to spoil it for anyone.

If I was mean
I would have done a Homer Simpson scenario from when he came out of watching "The Empire Strikes Back"
"Oh man, I cant believe Darth Vader is Luke's father!!?!?!?!"

1396160 Well we are all her for ya, buddy! Discuss away:)

1008237 Isnt Uhura supposed to be from East Africa?
In the TV series, Uhura had an exotic quality, in addition to her beauty and intelligence.

Supposedly in the TV series:
The famous inter-racial kiss was going to be between Spock and Uhura, but at the last minute William Shatner insisted it should be between Captain Kirk and Uhura. So it was nice to see Spock finally get to kiss Uhura.

The Uhura in the movie is really beautiful, but she seemed typically American. I suppose in the 23rd century people will be moving around quite a bit and it wont be that unusual to find an African girl in Iowa.

message 11: by Kandice (new)

1396160 Yes, Uhura in the series was more exotic, but I really think that was more because of the 60's than the show. She was portrayed more "ethnically" in the books as well. Sad to lose that quality.

In Shatner's defense, the reason he insisted the kiss be between he and Uhura, instead of Spock, was that some people would not have seen it as inter-racial. Instead they would have seen it as inter-species since Spock WAS an alien. It had more impact between a fully human white male and a fully human black female.

1396160 Oh, she was Swahili. Remember in #5, I think it was, she did that beautiful tribal dance as a distraction?

1240502 I purchased the original series Season One on Blu-Ray over the weekend and have been happily viewing each episode in order. I'll probably skip this one because I'd miss Shatner's zealous performances which make me chuckle every time.

1008237 Question for Alex.

Alex does your Blu-Ray version feature the enhanced computer generated space scenes?

In the original series, some of the space shots were almost laughable, bad models made out of cardboard.
I was originally reluctant to like the new scenes, but they did a good job giving a little more life to an already classic series.

message 15: by Kandice (new)

1396160 I don't mind seeing Star Trek's "strings". I htink it's part of it's charm. Shatner's ummm....quirkiness is a HUGE part of it. I wouldn't have him any other way.

message 16: by George (new)

243419 but if I were on the Enterprise heading into harm's way, I'd much rather have Jean Luc Picard in the captain's chair.

1240502 Manuel, what's cool about the Blu-ray release is the "seamless branching": you can watch the episodes with their original SPFX or the enhanced...or switch back and forth without pausing! I watch the episodes as orginally created but they look damn awesome in HD. I even like the 7.1 High-def master Audio mix. I think the set is worth every penny and Amazon has it for under $70.

message 18: by Manuel (new)

1008237 Thanks Alex,
I havent seen all the enhanced episodes yet, but each one I've seen looks great. I envy you!!!!!

820833 I went to see this movie to please my husband and daughter. I ended up being the one who loved it the most because I grew up watching reruns of the original TV series. I adored the humor in this movie. I really like a movie that can mock itself, yet have respect for its origins.

821945 Saw it and enjoyed it for the most part. A bit too much use of that Jittery Camera that is so prevalent these days, but a good solid reboot of the franchise that managed to keep me amused and entertained without insulting my intelligence.

message 21: by Jill (new)

1345249 I agree with that. The constant movement of the camera was a bit much.

435985 I finally got to see this the other day and really liked it. It was cool to see all the familiar characters in "young" mode, and Spock was always my favorite character, so I liked the emphasis on him (also liked Simon Pegg as Scotty). I almost teared up at the end hearing Nimoy's voice intoning those familiar words - "Space...the final frontier...

message 23: by Arthur (new)

735341 I got to see this. But wasn't surprised by it. It was at first some comedy that was like, get out of here. And the involvements between the characters reminded me of on stage acting instead of a true film. But as I got interested in while I watched I sort of enjoyed the black hole thing, and watching the drama of the alternate history/time line where it involved the Treks and mostly Spock. Seeing the older Spock totally helped this movie where it would be only some really hilarious teenage movie done by mistake if it wasn't that fact. Seeing all the cues for the alternate reality character coming to life makes it funny and entertaining but only. It's incredible they made it at all.
It was young and cool but doesn't seem to have much of a story. A lot of older stories have to little stuck between frames and this kind of was like that a huge production with little dialogue and effort. A fun movie if you got interested in it. I wondered what happened to get Spock home? And how much it will cost in dollars?

message 24: by Ubik (new)

1569308 I really liked the Spock character quite a bit. I had to suspend my disbelief a lot, but it was a good film overall. HAted the jittery camera though

1849037 Have you checked out the reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_tre...

It's now in my top five favorite films. Brilliant casting. Spock is the greatest character of all time.

Kandice, I love you for defending Shatner. :-D

1396160 Well, thank you, Shannon. Until the day I die!
