2263713 Just ordered some manga from Betterworldbooks. I ordered:

Revolutionary Girl Utena Vol. 1
Castle In The Sky Vol. 1
The All New Tenchi Muyo! Vol. 4
Pokemon Adventures Vol. 1

I can't wait for them to come in the mail.

1109068 Yep, Possession won the 1990 Booker.

message 211: by Misty (new)

1124284 I did the same thing.

message 210: by Alisha (new)

1585205 Yeah, I agree that House of Leaves doesn't seem like a book that you can read in one go. I took it out of the library and then when I saw how it was structured on the inside, immediately took it back to the library since I knew that I would never finish it by the due date. So, I'm glad I now own a copy and can take as long as I want with it.

message 209: by Misty (new)

1124284 Ooh, good stuff. Possession is a slow start, and can be slow in general at times, but it is somehow powerful (it is an award winner after all. Man Booker, I wanna say...) I've wanted to get my hands on House of Leaves for awhile. It's not really one you can do from the library, you have to spend time with it.

1585205 Ladies and Gentlemen, I just found the holy grail of thrift stores and the best part of it...it's amazing used book section, which had a separate shelf for science fiction and fantasy and a separate shelf for horror (this always surprises me since most bookstores just tend to lump those two together).

Anyway, I picked up:
Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging Confessions of Georgia Nicolson-Louise Rennison (YA)
Eragon-Christopher Paolini (YA)
Skylight Confessions-Alice Hoffman
Mystic River-Dennis Lehane
Odd Thomas-Dean Koontz
Possession A Romance-A.S. Byatt
Inkheart and The Thief Lord-Cornelia Funke (YA)
The Drawing of the Three, Night Shift, IT, Carrie, and Pet Sematary-Stephen King
House of Leaves-Mark Z. Danielewski

And there were so much more that I wanted, but I decided to exercise a little bit of control. Still, I'm so excited that I found a used copy of House of Leaves since I was thinking of splurging and buying it full price. And I really can't say no to it for 2.99.

2063546 I am off later today to pick up the next in the bendicet sociey series, #2 and maybe #3 if I am lucky. Really don't need to buy any as me to be read pile is huge but I cannot get excited about any of them at the moment.

message 206: by Alisha (new)

1585205 Today at B&N I picked up:
Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink
The Princetta by Anne-Laure Bondoux

message 205: by Eden (new)

I'm on it, too, and I forget to check that email account often enough, and I always miss them. Or get them when I'm broke and really shouldn't spend any money, no matter how %-off it is.

Nophoto-m-25x33 I fuel my book habit, well our families by being on Border's Mailing list. At any given time there is always a 25%-40%. With the 40% always being a lot more compelling. My wife is super addicted to the Joe Ambercrombie - First Law series. As for me I love scifi and have been going back and forth between Catching Fire and Charles Stross's Space Opera Saturn's Children.

Hmm on my buy list is probably The Magician's Elephant, which was written by the Tale of Despearaux author.

I'm too much of a scatter brain, I jump between mulitple novels as I buy them. >.<

I'm sure you will love the Hunger Games. I've been wanting to read A Dirty Job, but a friend just finished it and said she was disappointed. Let me know what you think when you read it.

1405910 Hahaha, I sympathize with everyone who has a bursting shelf. I mean, I don't need anymore books, I have enough to last me a year or two, but I just can't help buying more despite the fact that my house may collapse with the weight of the books, LOL! :-D

message 192: by Misty (new)

1124284 Ha. My shelves have started buckling, so I lay them on their sides and stack them as high as they will fit. This fits more, and props up the next shelf. One day, I'm going to pull out the lynchpin and the whole systems going to collapse...

message 191: by Fiona, Tweetacular (new)

1356469 Haha - yes shelf problems must be a common problem. I'm currently literally having to hammer books into my bookshelf which is fortunately quite deep and can hold about 3 rows of books. They're so tightly packed in though I need a hammer and chisel to get them out.

Must stop getting new books!

message 190: by Malcolm (new)

2723072 By the missus! Otherwise I will spend my next life trapped in Ikea trying to buy shelving! And if you've ever been trapped in Ikea you'll know that's about a close to hell as anyone would want to come.

2723072 Allison wrote: "I know what you mean though...I wish I could just INHALE a bunch of books through my nose or something.

If you find out how to do that - inhale books - can you let me know. Of course one wonders whether, as a writer that is, it might work the other way. Exhaling would save me a lot of time and torture. As it is, writing a book feels a lot like holding my breath.

message 188: by Fiona, Tweetacular (new)

1356469 Haha - by who? It's good advice too - I must keep away from any place selling or giving away books!

I've been given strict instructions to stay away from library book sales.

Thanks April. I've taken a closer look at a couple others. This Is All looked really fascinating and it looks like the sequence I read them in isn't a big deal.

April, I see these are part of his Dance Sequence. Are they very related to each other? Do you think it would be helpful if I started at the first one? I see you've read these two.

1124284 Natalee wrote: "Because of the characters? They are a bit stereotyped! And they (authors) try too hard to sound like teens but end up sounding cheesy!"

And so many of the references are too current, if you know what I mean. They are going to be dated and forgotten so quickly; they've given this series such a short shelf life. And some of the writing is just so cliched! There is a real tendency toward cheese, you're right.

message 180: by Jo (new)

2457455 Lol thanks Alyssa! I think i am going to read Sookie next. I am put off a little by the size of Labrynth so that is nearer the bottom of my pile

Can't wait to hear about the books you're about to score! Sounds like a fun Saturday!

1417211 I love this thread :). I've been mired in a grant assignment for a leadership course I'm taking, but I just now finished it (until the critique tomorrow...); I have so many books I want to read I don't know where to begin! Let alone what I want to buy :). I've got some books to take to trade in when my husband & I go to the Phoenix area on Sat. We're going to Changing Hands in Tempe (I have a 25% off birthday coupon!), and Bookman's in Mesa (that's where I hope to trade in, and it's a huge used books/media place); after all that, we're off to visit friends for the rest of the weekend. I've been doing a lot of rereading, but I'm soon to get New Moon from the library--not a Meyers fan, but thought I should read it as a teen librarian & because of the new movie. I'm enjoying the House of Night series much more. Great thread, tho I feel a little late to the party :).
