I didn't much like the book at all but I have the film, (Hugh Jackman) but it seems to be a lot different which is good as the book is a bit pointless.
Anyway, only got 10 mins in before I started getting a little bored. I will continue though.
Trying to get used to HJ not looking like Wolverine... still cute!
Fiona: Bored??? I thought this movie was great! I say try it again. I thought it was very well done. Especially the twist at the end. David Bowie as Nikola Tesla was a nice touch.I've heard from quite a few people that the book wasn't all that great though. I was going to try reading it, but I don't know now...
I think it's because I was thinking 'this wasn't in the book' and 'that doesn't happen yet' which is kinda good because it's actually better then the book! I wish I'd watched the film first. Now I'm looking back to the book and remembering how awful it was.I'm sure I'll like it once I can stop thinking about the book.
But I wouldn't read the book. It starts out from the perspective of a man trying to find out about his grandfather, or father or something - and it's all just a little weird. It goes along normal enough for most of it and then POOF magic/sci-fi weird crap.
I think the author also writes in a style that sounds like he's had a rod rammed up his rear passage which doesn't help.
Nolan again! Prestige was such a great movie! Christian Bale and Jackman - they performed so well in the movie. What book is it based on?
But a lot different from the book. I've only watched ten or so minutes and I can tell that already. I think the movie concentrates more so on the feud rather then their individually boring lives. It was so... slow and disengaged. And the author writes like he has a silver spoon in his rear end. It's really just pretty bad.
Fiona wrote: "The Prestige by Christopher Priest but I really would not recommend it."That's good to know. I was considering buying/reading the book based on how much I liked the film. I guess the book isn't always better than the movie, huh?
I loved this too. I particularly liked the way (to me, anyway) the trailer hinted at some sort of explanation like the magic being real, or something paranormal, which meant that the twist really left-fielded me for a change. I absolutely didn't guess the nasty little ending coming. Very Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected, sordid and monstrous, the worst of petty human nature.
Sounds like the book bites, though.
You watched Tales of the Unexpected???? I've mentioned that show numerous times on Goodreads, but nobody seems to know what I'm talking about! Did you ever see the episode Royal Jelly? Man...that scared the hell out of me when I was a kid!
Never saw it, but I have most of the books and I read the stories at a young and very impressionable age! A lot of them seem to have this moment where you're practically yelling at the main character "Turn back! Don't say it! Go home now!" (as fits) - that moment after which everything is NOT ALRIGHT.
Yes, Royal Jelly was quite freaky. He has a real talent with imagery that makes you squirm unpleasantly. My most memorable story was always one about a vicar who used to cheat householders out of antiques by misrepresenting their value, and he told one family that he wanted to chop an extraordinarily rare piece of furniture up for firewood, went to get his car and found that they had kindly chopped it up for him. Made me cringe every time.
I've read those stories as well. The Roald Dahl Omnibus is a great collection of his stuff.http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44513...
Oh the movie was superb!
And I had added The Prestige to my "to read" list a while ago... But now I'm not so sure. :/
Although it's one of those movies you need to rewatch, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend the film to everyone! :) Who can keep up, that is.
