I have heard that he writes beautifully, and I have always wanted to pick one of his books up, but always find something else that catches my attention.
I just love Pelecanos! If you like things fairly gritty and realistic as opposed to happily-ever-after, I recommend you try his quartet featuring Derek Strange, a PI in Washington, DC. The first book is Right As Rain. More recently, he has written a string of standalone novels, my favorite of which is last year's The Turnaround.
