Loren | 515 comments I will come back to do this but Shelli, I read Helter Skelter and liked it too. How about In Cold Blood. I read those in high school, I think. Is there something wrong with me?! The only other one I read of yours is Anna Karenina. That was a major chore for me! My daughter read Angela's Ashes and the Harry Potter Series. We saw the movie A Ashes and "liked" it. I have Lovely Bones here to read.
Thanx for doing this!

Loren...I also read and liked In Cold Blood and The Stranger Beside Me(about Ted Bundy)...those books are scary, but very good and amazing because they are true! Looking forward to seeing your list....some people didn't like Lovely Bones but I really did...especially if you read about the author. I also read her(Alice Sebold's... true life story)Also good but very hard to read...but you should if you like Lovely Bones...

Sharon | 219 comments Well, I have so many favorites I hardly know where to begin! I'll start with books I have discussed with this group, and/or on Oprah's Book Club site:

1. The Thirteenth Tale! Finished today, loved it!!
2. The Count of Monte Cristo
3. Water for Elephants
4. Anna Karenina
5. The Harry Potter books--especially the 7th one!
6. Digging to America by Anne Tyler
7. The Chronicles of Narnia (everyone else hated them except me! LOL!)
8. Jane Eyre
9. Believe it or not, I liked the Summer of Faulkner, although I had a REALLY hard time with "The Sound and the Fury." I wouldn't put these down as favorites, though, but still...you gotta admit, "As I Lay Dying" is kind of amusing in a way. Remember how the family pulled into the town after traveling with Addie for days, and everyone ran the other way?

I also love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, although we never discussed it here. Other books I love:

"The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (the author's name escapes me at the moment)
"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" (Aaaghh! Who's the author? I'm brain-dead!)
"A Tale of Two Cities" by Dickens
"Pride and Prejudice"

So many more, maybe I'll post more later...

This list is great! So many would make me top list as well. The only one I wouldn't put on is Cold Mountain - I tried to read it, but it never kept my attention. I finally saw the movie and really liked the story; I am thinking I should try it once again.

message 15: by Shelli (new)

Shelli I thought I'd add that I did enjoy the "Twilight" series...I read them all in a week last summer...I hate it when people compare them to Harry Potter, as in my opinion there is no comparison, but they were fun!!!
Shelli

message 16: by MarBear (new)

MarBear Blackburn (mbeth45) | 7531 comments Hi Shellie. I read "The Twilight Series," too. I really didn't think I'd like them but they are addictive. I didn't like the last book as well. Neither did my daughter. What did you think? I thought she somewhere just didn't write as well on the last book.

Mary

message 17: by Shelli (new)

Shelli Hi Mary...that's interesting as I liked the first and the last books the best! The middle two-I felt like they were "filler"....I can't remember which one went on and on about Jacob, but that whole bit started to bug me...I mean come on...Jacob over Edward? Never!!!Jacobs character bugged me a lot and he was not one of my favorites in the books...to be honest I never thought the writing was all that good...she made a lot of mistakes that I caught...I just purely enjoyed the story and the whole fantasy...vampire....love even if it kills you....stuff!! I felt like a young girl again when I read them....purely fun!! My boys thought I had lost my mind as I pretty much was absorbed by the books and ignored them...I did a lot of the reading on our boat while the kids wakeboarded and tubed and I got really sunburned a couple times!!!I hated to leave them and come back to reality!!!!

MarBear Blackburn (mbeth45) | 7531 comments HI Shelli. That's what I love about reading books and discussing them. One person can read a book and get one thing out of it while another person can read the same book and get something totally differently out of it. Look at "The Thirteenth Tale." I totally missed that I was Emmaline that died in the fire. In my mind I wanted it to be Adeline and missed all the clues. I read "The Twilight Series," books back to back. They were great. I overlooked any major flaws in them. They were just great books and fun to read.

MarBear Blackburn (mbeth45) | 7531 comments Hi Sharon. I never finished "Jane Eyre." I was trying to read "Uncle Tom's Cabin," at the same time. It was too much. I gave up and didn't finish either of them. LOL! I love Wally Lamb's books at least until I tried to read his name one. The language is awfu. I may never finish it.

MarBear Blackburn (mbeth45) | 7531 comments Hi Shelli. I've read " Pride and Prejudice." I loved it. I haven't seen the movie. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time ... is another story. I think I'm the only person who didn't like the book. I rarely dislike books but this book just wasn't great for me. "The Poisonwood Bible," is on my list to read but I haven't read it. I've heard great reviews about it but I've read the description and it just doesn't sound that interesting. As anyone else read it? If so what did you think?

Reading that book was a group book club moment too. I loved it. "The Book Thief," was so insightful. If you'll send me your address, I'll get the book back to you.

It contains a terrific combination of 18th century Scottish history, adventure, love, time travel, and yes, SEX! I've been listening to it on audio - the narrator is fantastic. I'm on the 3rd of the series, Voyager, right now. (The sex scenes definitely died down after Outlander :))

MarBear Blackburn (mbeth45) | 7531 comments Hi Shelli. I love Myrtle Beach. My sister used to live in Charleston. One year we went to visit them and then drove up to Myrtle Beach. Where are you staying? We stayed one night at a Holiday Inn. You can't go wrong with a Holiday Inn right? Jim and I woke up and there were bugs in our bed. UGH! They did refund us part of our money and we find a different hotel. Wish I could read in the car. I get so carsick. You have to go to Broadway on the Beach. It's wonderful.

I've always ordered books from Amazon. But this time something weird is up. I put in the order on May 18th. They still haven't even shipped it. I changed the shipping to 2-5 business days and paid $5.00 because I won't get the books until June but they still haven't shipped them. I'm beginning to wonder if I should cancel the order and redo it. I'll let you know if I ever get the book.

Jill (Jillybeans) | 4203 comments Hi Mary, did you buy the book from Amazon directly or from a third party? That's usually where I get the problems. I love Amazon otherwise. Once I ordered The Red Tent when we read it and the description said very good except a corner of the cover had damage. Well, apparently a dog had chewed on the book and the corners of the top corner also got badly chewed. I gave it a 4 instead of a five and the seller kept sending me threatening emails to change my review. I told her look, 4 is not bad, and it didn't meet my expectations. She said she clearly stated the corner had damage (uh, understated) and she didn't appreciate my tone! And she will never sell to me again! Like I would buy a book from that psycho!
