Happy Earth Day!

Does Earth Day matter? What should schools do for Earth Day? Is every day Earth Day?

(By the way, I wouldn't have noticed today was Earth Day but I was observing a Science class this morning and the instructor mentioned the holiday.)

Earth Day should matter, we only have one earth, and some times we treat it quite poorly.

In Olympia, Earth Day means that the Procession of the Species parade is coming up this weekend, which is the best parade in the whole world! Anyone can participate, they just need to dress up as something from the natural world.

They get grouped into four sections, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Samba dancers and drummers also participate.

That looks like an awesome parade. I'm excited that our kinetic sculpture race is coming up. It's not a parade, but it's good messy costumed fun.





They have to be seaworthy, and make it through mud and sand pits.

Earth day should be about celebrating not just what we have now, but what we are continually creating in our world (or what we desire to create).

I also think it's about Embracing the Wild Spirit within (as evidenced by the Procession of the Species parade - that looks like so much fun). Open your eyes and see what is around you for its Beauty, not its diffferences. The Earth abounds in amazingly beautiful wildness, and nutures it in the way each wild thing needs. We should learn the same.

In other words (as quoted from the cartoon/book Harold and the Purple Crayon):

"Always be careful when hugging a porcupine" - The wild things need our love too, we just have to know how to embrace them.
