Someone emailed in regarding a few (quite popular) quotes we have attributed to Mark Twain. She believes they are misattributions (albeit common ones). Jessica suggested asking if anyone in the Librarian Group wanted to attempt to research them further?

This one -- the second most popular GR quote!

And this one.

Thanks!

I've read that this Mark Twain "quote" was not anything he ever said.

With only four fans, I had no compunction deleting that one outright.

It's the ones with several thousand I hesitate to delete!

Cait (tigercait) | 5005 comments "Dance like no one is watching" seems generally attributed to someone named William Purkey, but I've got to run and that's just a preliminary search....

It is also in the GR d/b attributed to William Purkey

Hayes (Hayes13) I'd say, on the basis of the style of language alone, that Purkey is the better bet for the "Dance" quote. It doesn't sound at all like something Twain would say.

The other one almost sounds like somehting he would say, but not quite.

Great! Purkey it is, and I combined both versions.

Can we find a real source for the "bowlines" quote? Almost 4000 people want to know.

jenjn79 (isisfg) | 565 comments Rivka, that quote seems to be widely attributed to Twain. The only disagreement I found was a comment on a picture using the quote saying that though the quote is generally attributed to Twain, it is unverified and no proof exists that he really did say it.
