Do you have any favourite characters among the Murakami stories you enjoyed?
I like Midori in Norwegian Wood a lot, she was like a ray of sunshine in Toru's life. And also the librarian in Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. May Kasahara (Wind-up Bird Chronicle) is also rather amusing, although I am not terribly fond of the novel.
Share your favourites, regardless of whether they are protagonists or minor characters.
My vote for Midori too. :)I liked the 'End of the World' narrator in Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
I tried thinking of my favorite character from The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, it turns out I didn't like any of the characters strongly enough to call him/her my favorite. This is so strange considering how much I loved the book and the book itself is actually one of my favorites.
I am on page 338 of Kafka on the Shore and I am really enjoying Hoshino, the truck driver who is helping Nakata search. Here is a good Hoshino moment: "He used to go to the river every day to catch fish. Nothing to worry about back then, he reminisced. Just live each day as it came. As long as I was alive, I was something. That was just how it was. But somewhere along the line it all changed. Living turned me into nothing. Weird . . . People are born in order to live, right? But the longer I've lived, the more I've lost what's inside me -- and ended up empty. And I bet the longer I live, the emptier, the more worthless, I'll become. Something's wrong with this picture. Life isn't supposed to turn out like this! Isn't it possible to shift direction, to change where I'm headed? "
I'm going to be original and suggest Sumire and the narrators from Sputnik Sweatheart. I have a soft spot for that book.
Hoshino is the essence of cool. A sympathetic portrait of the Japanese male. Sadly his female counterpart tends to grab most of the headlines
