1056992 I love Toronto too - it reminds me a lot of the big cities in New Zealand - not quite American, not quite European

340071 We fell in love with Toronto when there was a lot more theater than there is currently. I saw Showboat there before it went to Broadway. It just has such a great big city feel but with fewer of the negatives than most U.S. big cities.

I've been to Algonquin Park. It is truly beautiful. Unfortunately, though, that requires a car. And, normally, we catch the train in Windsor to downtown Toronto and leave the car behind.

1056992 Good plan!
I used to be more of a fly by the seat of my pants traveler but as I get older I've turned into much more of a planner :)

Where would the fun be in having reservations in advance now Al? We've been to Cooperstown before - love it there. We were planning to arrive the day of the induction and stay overnight in one of the surrounding towns when everyone else is leaving.

Hmmm - that park sounds right up our alley! It looks to be about a 3 hour drive from Toronto so maybe we could fit it in to the journey. In a week's time we are trying to see the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown, NY, camp a night in the Finger Lakes region, visit Niagra Falls and stay in Niagra on the Lake, then head to Toronto specifically for the Hockey Hall of Fame and come back to the Boston area via the Berkshires.

Toronto is just a big city, typical of what you will find in any big American city. The Royal Ontario Museum referred to as ROM is worth a visit. If you want a true taste of Canada you need to go North of Toronto into Algonquin Park, head east to the Capital Ottawa, truly a beautiful place or Montreal/Quebec City for some culture, the east coast for the friendliest most welcoming people you will find anywhere in the world, the west coast for the vast mountains and long stretches of still undeveloped coast, ok I'm gushing, but you can't really experience Canada in Toronto. Sorry to my fellow Canadians in Toronto, but they know what I mean.

Not to turn this post into a fishing expedition for my personal travel plans - but any suggestions you might have for must see things in Toronto would be much appreciated. Planning a visit there in late July/early August for a couple of days - I recall seeing that the Caribana Festival would be taking place while we were there.

335756 Hi Maree - I'm not surprised you lean towards Canlit - there are so many good authors to choose from. I hope you'll consider suggesting some of your favourites for our reading lists in the future. We've read some but are always open to new ones.

340071 Welcome, Maree. One of my two favorite writers is from Canada, Alice Munro. Please keep us posted on not to be missed Canadian literature. I live in southeast Michigan and love spending long weekends in Toronto.

335159 Welcome Maree. A library around the corner when I was 8 would have been heaven. Glad you're here.

193297 Welcome to Constant Reader, Maree. I'm glad you found us.

1639563 I have been an avid reader since I discovered the library around the corner from my house at the age of 8, many, many, many years ago. I read just about anything I can get my hands on (except sci-fi) but I must admit that I do lean towards Canlit :-)
