So I've stolen this idea from another of my GR groups, I thought it would be a good way to share what we are reading and/or our favourite YA books. The idea is to open up your book to page 46, count five sentences down, and then type out the next couple of sentences, or a whole paragraph, giving everyone a glimpse into the story.
For example:I told myself firmly that all I had to do was to be very formal, very distant, very courteous, and let her see that she could no longer trifle with me.
"I was thinking, Miss Shipley," I explained, coldly. Then, as this seemed rather inadequate, I added in my loftiest tones, "There is, of course, a great deal weighing on my mind just now."
Eleanor merely continued to look at me for a moment.
"Ah, yes, I see," she remarked softly. "The dashing young hero who is going to save the whole cause of independence singlehanded."
-The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope
Great idea Jossie.
Here is page 46 five sentences down of Two Moon Princess by Carmen Ferreiro-Esteban
Don Alfonso smiled. “Indeed, my lady, indeed.”
Setting his feet wide apart on the tree trunk, he started brightly, “The reason for my being here in this your palace, my dear lady, is none other than to act as tutor and companion to King Julián, my beloved brother, whose name, I am sure, is not unknown to you.”
Don Julián de Alvar was indeed a familiar name in our kingdom, although not a welcome one. Four years past he had defeated our kingdom and taken from us some border lands that had been in dispute for generations. I had heard my father and his lords comment on Don Julián’s courage in battle and his cunning in the peace negotiations. As far as I knew, our kingdoms were not on social terms. Apparently, I was mistaken.
This is such a neat idea! Would it be better to pick a page that is earlier in the novel, so as not to give away any potential spoilers???
I don't think there'd be any huge spoilers or twists in a novel by page 46, would there? It was actually page 56 in my other group, and that was fine! Maybe if the book you're quoting DOES happen to have a spoiler on page 46, you could skip to a page before or after instead.
On my left Sophos asked, "Was it really not so bad?""Was what?"
"Prison."
I remembered my comment to the landlady. I watched Sophos for a minute, riding comfortably on the back of his well-bred mare.
"That prison," I said with heartfelt sincerity; "was absolutely the most awful thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life."
I could tell by the way he looked at me that he thought my life must have been filled with one awful thing after another.

“Haley, slow down! You aren't going to keep your figure at that rate,” she laughed with a subtle look of scolding on her face. Morse looked over at her and gave Haley an exaggerated wink, which caused the men folk to chuckle. She blushed profusely, self-conscious of her mealtime performance for the first time. Regardless, Haley seriously doubted she would have any problems with her figure. Her trip into Hoddmimir’s Forest, as well as her act of healing Ingmar, had drained her, and her body was quickly trying to restore itself. By sheer force of will, she set the drumsticks onto her plate and pushed it away from her. It was the single most difficult thing she had ever done in her whole life so far. Everyone was looking at her, so she decided to create a distraction by addressing Grandpa.“Grandpa, could you tell us again how you came to live in this town?”

This is great!! I just started all new books, so will have to wait til I get to that page 46 but I'm looking forward to posting when I do!!What about audio books? Should we pick a disc and chapter or something?
It doesn't have to be from a book you're currently reading; it can also be your favourites that you want to push/let everyone else know how great they are! Also Ann, I reckon somewhere in chapter three would work for audio books.
Okay, chap. three it is!!!:DOooh! And I LOVE the idea of posting from favorites! I'm gonna go round some up!! ;>
So during the afternoon I retreated to the library and curled up in the window seat with a book on my lap.
But for once the beautifully drawn words refused to make sense, and I gazed instead out the window at the rose garden, which would be blooming well after I was gone. "My last afternoon of peace," I muttered with my foregead against the glass, then I snorted. It sounded fine and poetic--but I knew that as long as I thought that way, the peace had already ended.
Court Duel by Sherwood Smith (part of the Crown Duel/Court Duel duet)
Eldest, by Christopher Paolini"The only thing it made clear was to avoid the strangers, which was common sense to begin with. 'The old man was crazy,' he decided."
"Mewling voices, hissing and chittering, issued from somewhere just outside the box, and the lid moved upwards a fraction of an inch, but stopped with the sound of metal on metal. A pale red glow with dancing shadows intruded into the widened crack, and the voices began to sound more insistent, as shadow as black as the darkest night -- a four-fingered hand -- played across the inner lid and then retreated from sight. Thomas lay as if dead. After an eternal moment, the lid sank back down and the sounds of rending turtle flesh resumed. At one point, the bell on the barn wall sounded a clanging dissonance against the alien feasting, as the phone in the house rang. It rang twenty times, for Thomas counted each one."The Electric Mystic by M. Andrew Sprong
"Genevieve was lucky to have such a bodyguard. Hatter Madigan could swing a blade (or several at once) faster and more accurately than anyone alive. He was nimble, acrobatic. He could flip and tumble through the air without getting hit by a single cannonball spider in an onslaught of cannonball spiders. But even with all his skills, he could not protect the queen forever. How could he have known that the precautionary measures he was about to take would prove useless, that it was already too late?" The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor
"He would jump in to save the guy, and not just because he's the enemy . Patterson picks on a lot of kids. Not as much as Cameron. Still his death would be a public service."Cameron finds this so funny he snorts a little as the breath leaves his nose.
"He's losing focus.

"And we have understood one another, Niki and I," Hildy continued. "We have seen, each, what the other is."
"Speak for yourself," Niki muttered. "But there's more to me than meets the eye."
"Of course," Hildy said, surprised.
Ann's head turned from one to the other. "Yes, I think I'd better take volleyball. With you."
"If it is what you want, then that is fine," Hildy said earnestly. "But we have made peace with one another, if it is not what you want."
"Not what she wants? Peace?" Niki asked.
"What, volleyball?" Ann asked.
Hildy shook her head and her eyes peered at them. "You can't confuse me," she said.
"Peace is what I want," Ann babbled. "Serenity, security, balance-- So, I'll take volleyball, whatever you say. How did that decision become so serious?"
"Ask Hildy," Niki advised, grinning and holding the door for them.
Tell Me If the Lovers Are Losers by Cynthia Voigt (End of Chapter 2)
"'Lord Asriel's been nursing a rebellion in his heart for as long as I've served him, that's one thing I do know.'
'A rebellion against the church?'
'Partly, aye. There was a time when he thought of making it an issue of force, but he turned away from that.'
'Why? Was the church too strong?'
'No,' said the old servant, 'that wouldn't stop my master. Now this might sound strange to you, Serafina Pekkala, but I know the man better than any wife could know him, better than a mother. He's been my master and my study for nigh on forty years. I can't follow him to the height of his thought any more than I can fly, but I can see where he's a-heading, even if I can't go after him. No, it's my belief he turned away from a rebellion against the Church not because the Church was too strong, but because it was too weak to be worth the fighting.'"

The Subtle Knife
by Philip Pullman
"Stop! I command you to stop."I stopped and stood shaking, while soldiers crowded around the hut. Their swords pointed at the ogre, who glared at me, then turned his back and retreated into the dim interior.
"Why did you listen to him?" Char asked.
I was still having trouble with the child. He was pulling his little beard and wriggling to escape.
",pwich azzoogh fraecH" he cried.
I used his distress to avoid answering the question. "He's frightened."
But Char wasn't distracted. "Why did you listen to him, Ella?"
I had to answer, somehow. "His eyes," I lied. "Something about them. I had to do what he wanted."
- Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Ah, Ella Enchanted:) I read the book after seeing the movie. I admit, I adored the movie even though it was quite different from the book.
Ahh! Sacrilege! HOW could you like that travesty of a movie?! BUTCHERED the book. Oh well, to each their own and all that...:)
It's all about order. I haven't talked to a single person who read the book first that liked the movie. I love the movie. I didn't read the book until afterward. My sister and I argue about it all the time. The movie is about as much like the book as the Princess Diaries movies are like their books. The characters have the same names, but other than that.... ;)
Yeah, I think it does really depend on what you read/saw first. As a true adaptation, I agree, the movie was NOT like the book. As an entirely different story (or a "loosely based on" though I did enjoy it (thanks in large part to Hugh Dancy;>)
By the time Elena reached her locker, the numbness was wearing off and the lumpp in her throat was trying to dissolve into tears. But she wouldn't cry at school, she told herself, she wouldn't. After closing her locker, she made for the main exit. The Vampire Diaries The Awakening and The Struggle
I like Lula a lot, but the last time we worked together I gained seven pounds and almost got arrested for shooting a guy who was already dead.

I've only read the first 4, but that one was my favorite! :)
he he, Hugh Dancy *nudge nudge*"That can't be true," Damiana said quietly. "Perhaps she is being groomed to take on your role after you're gone. Her sorrows are her own, and not of your doing."
Isadora sighed heavily. Everything about her was heavy, from her shape to her spirits to her voice; and yet her broad, sad face was the kindest one Fiona had ever seen. "I would not wish this role on anyone that I loved or hated," she said. "But I must confess, I am growing weary. In a few years, I will be happy to lay this burden down."
"Then who will be Dream-Maker after you?" Fiona asked.

"You're a strong swimmer. Don't you think I know that?"
"My arms are stiffening." Absolutely correct. "I can't feel my legs anymore." Also not a lie. "Nico, if you don't let me into the boat, I'll drown."
"Hit his fingers," said the Cloaked Woman once more. "Nicodemus, we have no time for this!"

^^Great series, that!Had he seen the dress on the goat? The dress that had been going to be mine on the day I should have married him?
I remember saying, when I first met Argul - I was afraid of him. He was just so absolute. So entire, complete.
And now, as the bouncing crowd pushed me back and forth, staring up at him on the lawn above, again I was afraid.
I'd forgotten what he truly looks like.

"Within a few short Vog years every last Vogon had migrated to the Megabrantis cluster, the political hub of the Galaxy, and now formed the immensely powerful backbone of the Galactic Civil Service. They have attempted to acquire learning, they have attempted to acquire style and social graces, but in most respects the modern Vogon is little different from his primitive forebears."
-The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Like when we were in Cub Scouts, my mom was our den mother, so she took us to where she worked. She took us to the hospital. We didn't know where other Cub Scouts went on field trips, so we just went along. I thought we might see X-ray machines, or broken bones, or maybe even doctors operating on patients. What I hadn't really figured out was that my mom was a prenatal nurse.
