April Book Vote
Vote for the April Book Read!
Vote for two books:
1) Filipino book (written by a Filipino author, either English or Filipino)
2) International book (written by anyone, available worldwide, in English)
Just one book in each category.
My vote:
1) Noli Me Tangere.
2) The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
I am reading the following books now, you might take interests too:a. In Assertion of Sovereignty (an account of 2000's all out war in Mindanao) authored by the writers of the Office of Strategic and Special Studies (AFP)
b. the Dialectics of Decadence (about arts)

Vote or nominate? If this is voting, I go with "Boy in the Striped Pajamas" for category 2. Wala pa akong vote for category 1. :)
I voteCategory 1 - My Brother, My Executioner by F. Sionil Jose
Category 2 - There are too many books out there... pwede kayang i-narrow down pa yung category 2? Can we pick a theme first?
Just a suggestion.=)
yeah we must first decide on what kind of theme we should read... so let's just postpone yet our book nominations...
Akala ko theme ang pagbobotohan? Anywayz, game ako sa world war na theme. As for the books per category, I'm fine with Noli Me Tangere and The Boy in Striped Pajamas (since the first I've already read and the second is what I plan to read soon anyway. The others kasi wala ako copy eh, ehehe, though I wanna read them too *_*)
I would like to suggest slavery for the theme. or pwede rin history of one of the provinces here in the philippines, like yung ano ang nangyayari sa mindanao during spanish and japanese invasion...
Vince wrote: "pwede rin history of one of the provinces here in the philippines, like yung ano ang nangyayari sa mindanao during spanish and japanese invasion..."Oooh, that would really be interesting although wouldn't those kind of books be hard in mainstream bookstore? Or obvious ba na hindi tumitingin sa Filipiana section? Ehehehe
I'm game for a World War theme -- WWI or WWII -- for category 2 since those are the books I usually read anyway. :)
Vince wrote: "...or pwede rin history of one of the provinces here in the philippines, like yung ano ang nangyayari sa mindanao during spanish and japanese invasion..."Great! Mindanao is fascinating and interesting to know more about. The philippine history i had in mind though was something that happened thirty years ago...noong dekada sitenta. Like a memoir or a biography of someone known whether that person was right or left.
But if books about that generation are hard to get a hold of (especially for Marco...uy, I appreciate the efforts in translating your announcement in tagalog!:), then any Philippine history for me is fine.:)
Noli Me Tangere would be great for category 1 and for category 2 slavery as a theme i think would fit.heheh..
By the way, if we do choose Noli Me Tangere for cat 1, does it have to be a specific edition? I mean, do we have to agree to reading it in it's English translation or Filipino translation or -- gasp -- in its original Spanish edition, because there are differences, right? Or do we just pick up whatever edition we have in our shelves and read it? :)
Wouldn't it be depressing if we chose world wars for a theme? After all, we're currently "reading" The Book Thief.. I can only take little doses of the Holocaust and wars.. :) I am looking forward to what Filipino book you guys decide on though. I'm not big on Filipino literature so I'm hoping this will be a good start. wag naman Noli Me Tangere pls. Didn't we dissect every single chapter in high school?
"Hope" is broad din unless we define it. "Hope" as in resiliency {surviving wars, poverty or slavery)? Or hope in a religious context, like believing in the goodness of man or believing in God?
Or hope as in getting a wish, like in fairy tales where the princess hopes the Prince will come and save her? :)
My suggested theme is World War I/II or Holocaust.
I already have a nominee for it.
CATEGORY 1: wala pa... nag-iisip pa. Kung NOLI ME TANGERE, is it still under this theme?
CATEGORY 2: Diary of Anne Frank
CATEGORY 1. I guess I'd go with Noli Me Tangere.CATEGORY 2. I'd like to nominate Color of the Sea by John Hamamura (World War II).

I nominate man in search of himself or finding his identity as our theme for the coming month... (ladies, sorry if the above sentence is politically incorrect.)
i suggest Noli Me Tangere for category 1 there's no other choice betteryet Ermita: A Filipino Novel..a novel by the known Filipino author F. Sionil Jose..
for category 2 Slavery na nga lng..cinderella type.hehehehheh..perhaps Morbid novels are also good. specifically "dust to dust" by Tami Hoag would fit..
Totally agree with you charles (for category 2)!! I also love cinderella type stories...
How about Fairytales for the theme. I mean, not the actual Cinderella and Snow White book but a book that has the same story with the fairytales we've read when we're still young and eat lollipops for lunch.
I've actually googled "novels based on fairytales" and here's the result: http://www.amazon.com/Fairy-Tale-Novels-...
List of suggested themes:
man in search of himself
Historical fiction
World War I/II or Holocaust
Slavery
Fairytales
I think those themes are fine... why don't we make of poll of that now so that when a chosen theme won, we can now proceed to the nominations of books...
I voted for World War I/II or Holocaust. I am suggesting The Diary of Anne Frank. I just watched Freedom Writers and it is a very inspiring movie. That book was one of the books that the class read and had a tremendous impact on their life.
so, when will the voting for this month's theme will end? so that we can start the noms for the month's group book read...
Better vote now guys... April's a-coming... I don't want us to get behind in the voting of our group read... especially with the upcoming book theme... too much good book will crop up, methinks... ^_^
I nominate these...1. Dekada '70 by Lualhati Bautista
2. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
Jaypee, we're not yet nominating books... go to polls on the right-hand section of this page to vote for this month's upcoming theme...
I think the fairy tale theme won... as of now I can't think of a book, except those by the Grim brothers, which have an element of fairy tale in it...
Yay, I voted for fairy tales. Can I nominate "The Bloody Chamber" by Angela Carter? Haven't read it myself but I'm on the look-out for a copy right now.
By the way, what about the Filipino book? Are we still doing that? :)
