1435453 Hi Everyone!

Thank you all for the suggestions! There are a lot of books here I want to read. I really liked the idea of a book for May that related to Veteran's Day, and decided to focus on books that were about being a soldier. Many of our suggestions here focused on characters caught up by the events of war in some other way, and I'd love it if we could have a category for that in a few months!

Again, thank you all for the suggestions!

580431 Wow, thanks for all the suggestions Jacqueline! Most appreciated. :)

1326635 Atonement is a great suggestion! I would also recommend Cold Mountain or The English Patient. I have a whole list in my head. Please tell me if I'm getting obnoxious with it.

The Zookeeper's Wife A War Story
Five Quarters of the Orange
The Quiet American
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
A Very Long Engagement

I would also like to read Snow Falling on Cedars, but it's a post-war novel, rather than taking place during one, set in the Pacific Northwest. It intrigues me because it's gotten mixed reviews over the years.

580431 Thanks Julie!

1066511 Oh, I forgot, there's also one that just came out called City of Thieves, about Leningrad during WWII. Also sounded interesting.

986586 Here is another suggestion

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel
by Louise Murphy

I have it on my to read list but it looks to have gotten high ratings.

1066511 I just finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet yesterday morning and really enjoyed it. I've done quite a bit of reading on the Japanese internment, and this was a really interesting book dealing with that. It also deals heavily with the main characters' conflicts between traditional Chinese beliefs and practices and American culture - what do the generations born as American citizens choose to do? Overall, a great book. And Jamie Ford is a GoodReads author, too!

That said, I'd be up for just about anything! I still want to read The Book Thief and the one about Potato Peel Pie sounds interesting too.

1435453 Sans, the store has Regeneration by Pat Barker, so I'm going to try it!

1470938 Ok cool.

I don't want anyone to, like, think I matter or anything. Or have good ideas. Or that I'm actually the person who runs the show.

Right.

580431 Thanks for not pointing that out. Point not taken. LOL

message 38: by Sarah (new)

1470938 Yea.

Finally.

*Not going to point out her eight thousand ten million four gajillion six hundred seventy three other good suggestions that have been into practice around here*

580431 Finally Sarah comes up with a good suggestion!

message 36: by Sarah (new)

1470938 Umm hello we need a category of "In My Pants", books that obviously just left that off the title so people would take the book seriously.

message 35: by Vivian "Rain" (new)

1435453 Sans, that Pat Barker looks interesting!

I want to check this out: Generation Kill by Evan Wright (Iraq)

My friends all recommend this one too. Why haven't they loaned it to me yet???

message 33: by Sans (new)

1451884 This was mentioned on SFGate.com: Life Class by Pat Barker. It sounds interesting and takes place during WWI.

message 32: by Dominique (new)

1460399 Thanks! It keeps staring at me too, Sans.

580431 That one is HIGH on my list!

message 30: by Sans (new)

1451884 Great idea! I glace at that book when I'm at the shops but haven't *twitch* bought it yet.

580431 *taking notes*

message 28: by Dominique (new)

1460399 I love that category suggestion! I recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. The setting is post WWII and it's been recommended to me by everyone who's read it.

message 4: by Sans (new)

1451884 Isn't The Book Thief set in WWII also? If it doesn't make the poll for next month we can put it up again for May.

580431 Awesome suggestion, Sans!

message 2: by Sans (new)

1451884 Well, 25 May is Memorial Day in the States. Books that are set in a time of war or deals with veterans? Like Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet A Novel or The Kommandant's Girl or Atonement.
