1660443 I thought it would be a good idea to have a place where we can see who's currently reading what Dean Kontz novel.

I'm starting The Good Guy tonight. I have no idea how this one passed me by, but I'll be starting it later. I'll let you know what I think.

1551971 I'm reading Brother Odd right now...

message 3: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I'm enjoying mine, I didn't want to put it down. but it got so late that I had to.

1551971 Between school and work I haven't been able to read as much and I can't stop thinking of it!!!

message 5: by Lynai (new)

1470974 I'm reading The Vision now but somehow I couldn't find myself into the story...DOn't know why, maybe because this book was written during the 1970s?

message 6: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I liked the Vision, but it wasn't one of his best. For older novels, I preferred The Mask.

message 7: by Lynai (new)

1470974 I have been avoiding his older novels because of The Vision. It's a good thing his writing became excellent in most of his recent books.

1772003 I just finished The Husband yesterday. Its good but not great.

message 9: by Jackie (new)

1660443 The husband was OK, not his greatest. I'm starting to feel The Good Guy is just OK too. It started out pretty good, but now it's getting monotonous. And one thing keeps annoying me, the hero of the story has a friend who is a policeman and he won't tell him what's going on. I think that's illogical. And the parts where we're in the killer's head is just plain boring, this over the top superiority complex he has bores me to tears.

Yes, It had its moments. :)

I was really intrigued about the plot in The Good Guy but after it unfolded, to me, it started going slightly downhill from there. Brilliant plot though.

message 12: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I have to put it down for a few days, I borrowed Watchmen last night and want to finish it before I go to the movies to see it on Saturday morning.

1836245 I am starting "The Face" The Face

What is your opinion of this book? I have a lot of Dean Koontz on my bookshelf.

message 14: by Jackie (last edited Mar 06, 2009 06:34PM) (new)

1660443 I haven't read that one and we've had it since it came out. My husband read it and said it was so-so.
Tell me what you think, maybe I'll read it.

message 15: by Stacy (new)

1518185 I read The Face when it came out. I don't personally think it was his best, but it was pretty good nonetheless.

2034124 I started The Taking a few days ago and am rather pleased with it thus far. It seems to be like a combination of Winter Moon and Phantoms (both of which I very much like), but on a global scale.

message 17: by Stacy (new)

1518185 Jason wrote: "I started The Taking a few days ago and am rather pleased with it thus far. It seems to be like a combination of Winter Moon and Phantoms (both of which I very much like), but on a global scale."

LOL, Jason, I just left you a comment in a different discussion regarding this book. It's my favorite of his followed by Tick Tock and Phantoms.

message 18: by Stacy (new)

1518185 I'd like to say that I'm reading book three of the Frankenstein trilogy. I had it written down in my planner that it was to be released yesterday. That's what it says here on Goodreads and amazon uk was/is taking pre-orders for it showing a release date of yesterday. However, when I talked to the manager of the Waldenbooks in my mall, she said that it has not been released yet and the only thing they've heard is that it will definitely be this year sometime.

message 19: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I liked The Taking. The scene with the coyotes in the rain in was so vivid. I still see it in my mind.

message 20: by Stacy (new)

1518185 I think the scene that freaked me out the most was when they were walking down the road with the trees overhead and seeing the alien hand and tail above them. That starts the ball rolling for all of the other creepy stuff they see.

message 21: by Dave (new)

1772003 I just finished Odd Thomas. I really liked how Koontz writing style shines in this novel. He writes plots that only he, himself, could pull off. I'll have to read the others in the series now.

message 22: by Stacy (new)

1518185 They're all very good Dave, in my opinion.

message 23: by Jackie (new)

1660443 Odd Thomas was of course the best in my opinion, but they are all very good, very enjoyable. I like the style DK writes with Odd. I find myself laughing at the most craziest of times. So much like Odd himself, LOL

message 24: by Jason "Slo" (new)

2599732 I'm a newbie here but I'm reading Lightning and loving it. I'm going to be bummed when I finish. Not sure which of his books to pick up next. I'm kinda leaning toward Life Expectancy. That one sounds interesting.

message 25: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I read Lightning in the mid 80s and it's STILL one of my favorites by DK.
I felt much the same as you, Jason, I didn't want it to end. Isn't that awesome when you feel that way about a book?

message 26: by Jason "Slo" (new)

2599732 Hey Jackie! Yeah, I love that feeling. You don't really get the same thing out of movies. The characters just feel so much more "real".

Recently my aunt gave me box just FULL of Koontz books and I've just been picking out which ones sound best. I think I have almost everyone of his books. :)

message 27: by Jackie (new)

1660443 You must be in heaven!
Yeah, movies can't compare to books. So much gets cut for time constraints and in books we really get to know the characters. DK writes great characters, I love them, I hate some, but it brings out emotions as if they were real. I like that.

message 28: by Lynai (new)

1470974 Wow Jason. I so envy you! How I wish I have an aunt like that. :D

I finished Shadow Fires yesterday. It was good. Not as good as Lightning (which is my most favorite) and Watchers (which is my second favorite) but still good nevertheless. Action-packed, fast-paced, on the runs scenes which i absolutely love.

I hate to say this but I was disappointed by The Taking. Well, maybe I'm not just into aliens and ET stuff.

message 29: by Jason "Slo" (new)

2599732 Thanks Lynai! Yeah, my aunt is pretty cool. I need to send her an email or card or something thanking her again. She gave me almost endless hours of enjoyment. I only have like 50 pages left in Lightning. I'm saving them....

message 30: by Lynai (new)

1470974 Lightning is way much better than The Time Traveler's Wife. Dean Koontz's concept of time travel is more believable. :D

message 31: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I'm reading TTTW right now. It's not a sci fi novel, I think that's why sci fi people hate it so much, like the author robbed the time travel idea and didn't really do all that much with it. It's more of a love story, which I usually do not like. But for some unknown reason, I am enjoying this. The time travelling is incidental in TTTW, whereas I usually like it be all about the time travel. I'm a total sucker for the subject. I'm not even sure why it entices me to the degree that it does.
Lightning is by far a better time travel book. Did you ever read Timeline by Michael Crichton? That was a good time travel book too.

message 32: by Lynai (new)

1470974 Hi Jackie. I gave one star to TTTW. But I don't mean to influence you with my rating okay? :) I haven't read Timeline yet. Will try to check it out at the bookstore one day. Thanks for recommending. :)

message 33: by Martin (new)

2145275 Hi Jason. You said that you were thinking about reading `Life Expectancy`. This book was my first Dean Koontz novel & it instantly made me a Dean Koontz fan! I really enjoyed the concept of the story & really liked the characters in it too. It has elements of the supernatural, but not too much. Just the right amount. A great novel in my opinion, & definately worth the read!

message 34: by Dustin (new)

2454496 Jason,I really enjoyed Relentless, published earlier this Summer - since it's new it may not be in your box of books but you can barrow it from the library. I read it in only 4 days which is really rare for me. However, Life Expectancy is my favorite - I plan to re-read it in the near future. By now you may have already started your next Koontz book. Which one did you choose?

message 35: by Jason "Slo" (new)

2599732 Thanks Guys! I am going to go ahead and start Life Expectancy next. I'm down to almost exactly 50 pages left in Lightning, so I'll finish that tonight and then start Life Expectancy tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestion of Relentless too. It's not in my box but I will definitely check it out.

message 36: by Jackie (new)

1660443 I've got to buy Relentless too.

message 37: by Dustin (new)

2454496 I haven't seen a lot of discussion about Relentless on the Dean Koontz group but by the reviews on goodreads, people either really liked it or they really didn't. Koontz is such a cross-over genre writer that different aspects of his writing get lots of different people interested in his books. Some of his books focus more on one genre than another: sci-fi, horror, suspense, humor etc(I know you already know this - I'm just trying to explain why there is such a big difference of opinion by Koontz readers on certain books).

I enjoyed Relentless and whether it's the Dean Koontz novel that appeals to you or not - it's a very fast paced read after about 30 pages and only about 400 pages long, so I think it's well worth a try.

message 38: by Dustin (new)

2454496 Jason - some of the following popular Koontz novels might be in your box of books, since they are older titles: Watchers, The Bad Place, Cold Fire, False Memory and By the Light of the Moon. They are some of my favorites.

message 39: by Joe (new)

2618452 New to the group so hello to all. Just started "By The Light Of The Moon".On pg. 62 as of now and not to bad so far.--:0)

message 40: by Dustin (new)

2454496 Joe, I am also reading By the Light of the Moon. I previously listened to it on Audio Book about 4 yrs ago so it'll be interesting to see what I remember and if I still think it's as great as I did listening to it. I'm on page 67! I'm kinda a slow reader so you may get through it before I do.

What other Dean Koontz books have you read?

message 41: by Joe (new)

2618452 Hey Dustin, Actually this is my first Dean Koontz book. An old friend of mine has been telling me to look into his work so I am finally doing so. I recently found 9 of his books in a couple of garage sales so I am ready to give him a try. As for reading it quickly, I wont be reading it fast either. It is one in four I’m reading , so it is not getting top billing as of now. Chapter a day for now.--:0)---Happy reading to all !!

message 42: by Dustin (new)

2454496 I've got myself into reading several books at the same time as well. If you like By The Light of The Moon be sure to ask the group for other Koontz recommendations. Maybe you could put those other 8 Koontz books you picked up on a poll and see which one wins - Just an idea since this group doesn't currently have any polls.

"The effect is without exception interesting, frequently astonishing, and sometimes positive." - By The Light of The Moon

"...in contemporary America you should not reply to strangers who, unbidden, revealed their fears of mortality and their preferred deathbed snacks." - By The Light of The Moon

"Obviously, he's some sort of lunatic doctor." "...Why isn't he just killing patients in HMOs like he's supposed to?" - By The Light of The Moon

2034124 Those are great quotes, Dustin!

message 44: by Dustin (new)

2454496 I love Dean Koontz Quotes. I may be crazy but I keep a "Book Journal" I write down thoughts about each book I read including favorite quotes and passages. I record more quotes from Dean Koontz books than I do any others.

message 45: by Jackie (new)

1660443 Dustin, you are genius, I like the Poll idea.
Please Jason, do it! Just make sure you let me know it's there, if you decide to do it.

message 46: by Dustin (new)

2454496 Check out this Listopia - where you can vote for your favorite Koontz books. I found it soon after I joined Goodreads in June.
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/481.B...

message 47: by Jackie (new)

1660443 It doesn't have The Mask on that list. I still want to know what books Jason got.

message 48: by Dustin (new)

2454496 You can add books to the listopia. There is another Koontz listopia also but not as many people have voted on that one. I think I'll create one about the Worst Dean Koontz Books soon. Anyway, the listopias were just another thing I found interesting - they are kinda hard to find on the goodreads site.

I'd like to see some polls on this group so I'm gonna go ahead and create one or two right after I finish this post. I hope both Jason and Joe will put the books they got into polls - please post a comment here if you make a poll. Making a poll is very easy - simply write your question, put the books as answers and save it - of course you don't have to just do books it could be anything like "What is your favorite Dean Koontz Character?"

message 49: by Jason "Slo" (new)

2599732 Just wanted to thank everyone who suggested Life Expectancy. That book was awesome!

I just started The Face of Fear last night. I'm not sure what I think so far... I feel like I've been spoiled with the last 5 I've read: Intensity, Velocity, Midnight, Lightning and Life Expectancy.

message 50: by Mischelle (new)

1898885 Right now I'm reading Your Heart Belongs To Me. This is not a great one though. It is slow going for me or maybe I've been just too tired. I want to finish this soon.
