Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments Is anyone up for a lengthy Buddy Read next Fall? We would begin September 15, 2013 and finish up the week of December 22nd, just in time for the new year!

Since the book is almost 1500 pages long, I think a schedule would work best. Each week's section is about 100 pages.

9/15: Sections 1.1 - 2.8
9/22: Sections 2.9 - 3.20
9/29: Sections 4.1 - 5.15
10/6: Sections 5.16 - 7.2
10/13: Sections 7.3 - 7.35
10/20: Sections 7.36 - 9.4
10/27: Sections 9.5 - 10.12
11/3: Sections 10.13 - 11.23
11/10: Sections 11.24 - 12.26
11/17: Sections 12.27 - 13.29
11/24: Sections 13.30 - 14.26
12/1: Sections 14.27 - 16.6
12/8: Sections 16.7 - 17.15
12/15: Sections 17.16 - 18.8
12/22: Sections 18.9 - end

Is there anyone else who has wanted to read this book and wants to tackle it with me?

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments Yahoo! Thanks for reading this with me, Connie and Deborah.

message 5: by Travis of NNY (new)

Travis of NNY (TravisofNNY) | 2221 comments If it keeps my interest for the first 300 pages I'll finish if not I'll quit. I cannot blindly commit for 1500 pages though

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments That's fair, Travis. It wouldn't be much fun to read 1500 pages you didn't like. I'm glad you are joining in.

Rusalka (Rusalkii) | 6194 comments I'm interested as it is on my tbr, but never realised it was that long!! I will have a look closer to the date, but put me down as an interested interloper.

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments Sure thing, Rusalka. It will be fun having you along. It is very long!

You just read Anna Karenina - you're a trooper and can do anything.

Travis of NNY (TravisofNNY) | 2221 comments I joined groups to get away from thrillers and fantasy and widen my genres so might as well give it a whirl. I can read anything with a good plot and there seems a bit of historical fiction to this which I like.

message 12: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments It will be interesting seeing your male perspective of this book, Travis. I'm looking forward to it.

Deborah | 39 comments I read this back in 92 or 93. I was in the Coast Guard at the time. We were underway and this book ruined my summer. 14 hour workdays and then at nights I couldn't put this book down. And not only did it keep me up - it was HEAVY too!

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (JaMaSc) | 14669 comments That's when ebooks or audiobooks come in handy. They don't give you carpal tunnel from holding a heavy book.

message 15: by Travis of NNY (new)

Travis of NNY (TravisofNNY) | 2221 comments First thing I did was check to see if any men had reviewed it and there were several some even giving it 4 or 5 stars. I check every boom for reviews to see if it is mostly men or women reading them.

Deborah | 39 comments Janice, back when I was on the boat we didn't have no E-readers. We just built a doc so we could pull the dinosaur up to the ship and make it carry our books! E-readers!

Deborah | 39 comments Uphill. In the snow. In both directions.

message 19: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments That is a wonderful recommendation, Deborah. I'm glad you don't feel it is a "woman's book", Travis! It was written by a man so that should make you feel a little better. :-)

message 20: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue I'm interested in this Judy. I checked the other day to see if it's available for Kindle and it's not. It would be nice it it is by next year---nice for my wrists and hands I'm thinking. I'm assuming there will be reminders along the way.

message 21: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments Oh, good, Sue. I'm glad you will be joining in. Were you talking about a reminder to read this?

Sue Judy wrote: "Oh, good, Sue. I'm glad you will be joining in. Were you talking about a reminder to read this?"

Yes--just a general reminder.I did put a reminder in my Firefox reminders but I haven't put the schedule in yet. I'll leave that for much closer to the time. I really do want to read this. I read 2 books by Rohinton Mistry this year and they were excellent. Indian literature now intrigues me (like Chinese and Japanese and Russian and.....

message 25: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments Can you read several letters at the same time or does one letter have to be finished before the other will count? If the latter is the case, Rusalka may have a chance of using this book in her alphabet.

Sue I will send myself a reminder to send you a reminder. :-)

Sue I am so hoping this is on kindle by the time this read happens!!

Deborah | 39 comments Sue, me too! And I own the thing. It's bigger than a phone book!

message 29: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments Wonderful Gaeta and Lori, glad to have you joining in! Between us all we should be able to get through this phonebook of a book.

Snoozie Suzie (SnoozieSuzie) | 937 comments I own this, so may join you. I won't say definitely as committing to things makes me not want to do them!

message 35: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments I hope you can, Gaeta. I know that is a long time away, but was the only time I had a big enough block of time to get it in. :-)

message 36: by April (new)

April | 970 comments I realize that this buddy read is not for awhile yet but I wanted to post this before I forget. As I stated earlier, I read this book a couple of years ago. I just came across a vocabulary cheat sheet that I made for myself while I was reading the book. When I read the book I was not very familiar with the Indian terminology. If anyone is interested, I will gladly send it to you. Just let me know.

message 37: by April (new)

April | 970 comments Gaeta1...can you pm me your e-mail address? I have this in a table format and I won't be able to send via goodreads pm.

Anyone else who is interested, please pm me your email address.

message 38: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue Thanks April.

message 39: by Lynn (new) - added it

Lynn | 1112 comments Well I've just checked Kindle and they do have it.

I'm interested, however you're starting in September which is my busiest time of year (I tend to work from 60 to 90 hours a week that month) so I could fall behind right from the start.

I am really interested in reading it though so put me down, if it get's too much then I'll just have to drop out ::shrugs::

April - I'd be interested in your vocabulary cheat sheet, it sounds like it could be useful.

message 40: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue Wow Lyn! the last time I checked they didn't have it. I definitely will get it.

message 41: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments Glad to have you join us, Lynn. You do sound like you will be busy! We will average close to 100 pages per week, but if you split it up into about 15 pages per day it might be doable for you.

message 42: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments April you are sweetie!

message 43: by Sue (last edited Jan 23, 2013 03:03PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue Lynn, I just checked and all I see is A suitable Boy Lesson Plan. sadly. I also looked and you live in the United Kingdom. Maybe it's available there but not in the U.S. Crazy how that happens.

message 44: by Lynn (last edited Jan 23, 2013 04:13PM) (new) - added it

Lynn | 1112 comments I've just checked again in case I made a mistake and it was the lesson plan. It's definitely there; full book, no lesson plan.

Maybe it's as you said it's something to do with UK / US

message 45: by April (new)

April | 970 comments Lynn...if you PM me your e-mail address, I will gladly send it. In order for me to send via goodreads PM, I would have to redo the entire document.

I know that this can go both ways. There was an offer for a free Lee Child novel yesterday but it was specifically NOT for anyone in the US. I really hope A Suitable Boy comes out here for Kindle before September...it's so huge I don't know what it will do to my hands.

Judy (patchworkcat) | 5743 comments You sure wouldn't want to drop it on your toes! lol.

message 48: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue I just put in a request for a kindle edition at Amazon.

message 49: by Rusalka, Moderator (new) - added it

Rusalka (Rusalkii) | 6194 comments So I am searching for it on Kobo books and it keeps on giving my porn, Lance Armstrong's "biography" and the Boy Scouts Handbook. /sigh

I'm going to look for an open source ebook of it, will you know if I find one.

message 50: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue Thanks. Maybe if a lot of people request it at Amazon it will help. We now know it's available as an ebook in the UK.
