Duncton Wood by William Horwood (first of a series and the best.)

I felt the same way about the Pern books. They start out feeling like fantasy, and gradually SF elements are introduced, but not enough to destroy the fantasy feel to the books until many books into it. I stopped reading the series when it became overtly SF, for the same reason I stopped reading the Potter series. She was changing the tone in the middle. She can say all she wants about what she intended the books to be, but I've read lots of blogs and articles claiming that the author is not the last word in what the book is about, it's the reader's experience. Editors change the declared genre of a book all the time if they think it will sell more copies.

The Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher also has real fantasy elements in it, but in the history of the story is a Roman Republic with technology that no one could understand, since they themselves had no use for it.

You could say exactly the same about the Darkover series. The thing is, when you read some books of both series, it feels more like fantasy than sf, even if you know that the dragons or the psychic powers are the result of breeding in both cases.
Some stories just can't fit in only one box.
Unfortunately, the other series I had in mind that isn't already on this list is another hybrid: The Second Sons Trilogy, by Jennifer Fallon.
I can't help it, I like both genres!

1750419 I would argue, as would Anne McCaffery, that Dragonriders of Pern is actually Science Fiction, especially if one has read the prequels, where the origin of the dragons is made very clear. Pernese civilization fell from being technologically advanced due to the first experiences with Thread. There is nothing mystical or supernatural that makes it fantasy.

Why are Mythago Wood and the Long Dark tea-Time of the Soul on the list? Aren't they single titles?

I'd add my own series, but it isn't finished yet, and so few people have heard of or read it that I don't think it qualifies as an all-time best.
