1805316 Didn't see a topic like this one, so I thought I'd start one. What are your recently acquired or purchased books? Today I got Old Man's War by John Scalzi, Song in the Silence by Elizabeth Kerner, and Sabriel by Garth Nix.

I remember a time when I went to the bookstore I would just get one book, but now I almost always seem to get them in twos or threes. So, now my "to read" pile has gotten really huge. :P

1826572 I just went to the used bookstore today and got 3 Gaiman books -American Gods, Neverwhere, and The Sandman Book of Dreams. I also got Dream Chaser by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Voyager by Diana Gabaldon. I don't know where to start. I have a list of others I really wanted to get and I forgot the list at home, of course.

178353 I have an embarrassing number of recently acquired books because my local used bookstore is moving and was having a 50% off sale! Unfortunately, they had already packed up their fantasy section by the time I got over there!!!! ARGH! But, I did get a bunch of my other fav - historical fiction.

My recent fantasy acquisitions are the 2nd in the Sword of Truth series and the 3rd in the Wheel of Time series.

Library-wise, I have Mistborn and Tigana waiting for me to pick them up tomorrow!

Funny.. my used bookstore is doing the same thing. Fortunately, I have bought out all the decent looking books from the fantasy section already. Perhaps you just didn't get there before me?? *teasing grin*

Recent Buys:

The Crown Conspiracy
Griffin's Daughter
Mistborn The Final Empire
The Wayfarer Redemption
The Name of the Wind
The Traveler
Life in a Medieval Castle

There's more, but they're in a bag from my used book store and I am too tired to look. I shall add to this tomorrow :)

178353 Argh, Viktoria! I knew you had been there before me! :) Seriously, though, I haven't found a great used bookstore in Brooklyn. By great, I mean like Powell's in Seattle or something where (1) it's well organized, (2) the employees are knowledgeable; (3) prices reflect that it's used; and (4) good selection. Strand has some of that, but is surely not well organized.

message 7: by Sandi (new)

811687 I picked up a copy of Elizabeth Moon's The Speed of Dark yesterday. My Amazon order should be in tomorrow it includes:

Lud-In-The-Mist
Bridge of Birds A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was
Good Day in Hell
The Stand
Hammered
and Agent to the Stars

The Strand has gotten kinda crappy from what I understand. I haven't been there myself, but friends have told me that it's going downhill even further. Makes me sad to hear it. It used to be such a magical place. It was even featured in some of my favourite short stories by some of my favourite authors (like Joyce Carol Oates).

I always wanted to visit Powell's. I still have hope. I just need enough money for the flight to Seattle!

message 9: by Josh (new)

221650 The last two books I bought were "Tales from the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance, the complete volume set, and "His Majesty's Dragon" by Naomi Novik. Both of which I've looked for every time I go to Half Price Books and then found them a week or so ago. Like Elise, my pile of books is growing and growing way faster than I can read them. And Elise, enjoy "Old Man's War" because it's a great book. John Scalzi is one of my favorite authors.

message 10: by Jeanne, Monthly book reading Mod (new)

1042102 Sandi, Bridge of Birds has been sitting in my "To Read" pile for about 2 years. I keep finding other things I want to read first. Maybe we should lobby for it to be a monthly pick so we can both get it read! LOL!

Robin I hope you enjoy Howls Moving Castle as much as I did!

message 11: by Emily (new)

178353 Ok! I stumbled upon a new-to-me used bookstore today - must have been my reward for complaining about not finding one previously. Strange that I should stumble upon it today, after living here for 3 years but I am definitely not complaining since I got about 7 books for less than $25!

Anyway! Here's what I got!

Banewreaker by Jacqueline Carey
Godslayer by Jacqueline Carey
The Dragon Reborn, by Robert Jordan
The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay
The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan
Grass for His Pillow by Lian Hearn
The Winter King A Novel of Arthur by Bernard Cornwell

message 12: by Chris, Pollster Mod (new)

1956959 Emily - Nice haul. You'll have to let me know how those Carey books are. I've been eyeing the Sundering books for awhile now...

841652 I'm in the same situation Emily! I just found an awesome used bookstore near me and got a bunch of books for 12 bucks! (If you spend 10 bucks, you get one free paperback, which is awesome!)
These are the ones I got...
A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1)Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1)A Wind in the Door (Time, Book 2)Kushiel's Dart (Kushiel's Legacy, Book 1)American GodsThe Pillars of the EarthMiddlesexOutlander (Outlander, Book 1)

Tell me what you think of Kushiel's Dart once you finish it, Kelsey. A friend gave it to me ages ago and I've never gotten around to it. It sounds interesting, though.

message 15: by Kelsey (new)

841652 I definitely will! I should be reading it sometime soon...

1572236 Nice Haul Kelsey and Emily - used books are so great!Jeanne, I did enjoy Howl's Moving Castle. I heard the movie is MUCH different and based on the preview I saw it would seem so. I'm going to try and watch it in the next few weeks or so.

message 17: by Melyssa (new)

1958329 I just ordered The Alchemyst: The Secrets of Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott. Someone told me it was kind of like Harry Potter, and if I liked HP to give it a try. So I am.

My stepdaughter read it and said it was awesome....oh, and if you'll remember, Nicholas Flamel was part of the story in the first Harry Potter...

message 19: by Robin (new)

1572236 Ya that's the first thing I thought of when I read Melyssa's post - oh he's the guy that made the socerers stone

message 20: by Kelsey (new)

841652 I've been meaning to pick that one up too. I keep seeing it at work and the cover intrigues me...

message 21: by Emily (new)

178353 John, Kushiel's Dart is one of my fav books in the genre. I think it's fantastic, but you have to be ok with sex and violence. All done tastefully, of course, but you do have to know what you're getting into. I really loved it, though, and immediately reserved Book 2 at my library. Can't wait for it to arrive!

1805316 My haul yesterday

The Last Hero: A Discworld Fable by Terry Pratchett. I actually read it yesterday, and really enjoyed it despite me not really liking Terry Pratchett. But hey I also got another book by him too which was Mort. Giving Pratchett another go I guess. :P

I also got Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson, and The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.

Now, I think I'm going to ban myself from getting anymore new books (at least until my "to read" pile gets down to a reasonable level) because I think I've run out of room for them. :P

message 23: by Colin (new)

Nophoto-u-25x33 My latest purchases are Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy.

The Blade Itself (The First Law Book One)Before They Are Hanged (The First Law, #2)Last Argument Of Kings (The First Law, # 3)

I'm quite enjoying book 1.

message 25: by Elise (new)

1805316 I think last I went to the bookstore was 2 or 3 weeks ago, so I'm due for another visit. This is what I got last time

Dragonseed (Bitterwood)
The Maze of Bones (The 39 Clues, Book 1)

message 26: by Leslie, Author promotions Mod (new)

1059245 I've aquired in the last week the following:

The Successful Novelist by David Morrell

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. This book caught my eye at Costco because of the cover, plus it promised bone-crunching zombie mayhem in the blurb! What could be more fun?!!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies sounds awesome. Definitely sounds like a fun read.

2279097 I don't buy books much, because they have to be really good in order to earn a spot on my shelf. The last book I bought (not got as a gift) was actually Twilight, last year. I am embarrassed to say that I was so excited about it that the entire process (going to the Books A Million, picking out a copy, having forgotten my Books a million card, walking out of the store, glancing at the prologue on the way home, etc) is etched forever on my brain. Not sure why!

message 30: by Libby (new)

1803452 Based on this thread, I’m glad to see I'm not the only person who acquires books faster than she can read them. Due to my overwhelming "to be read" pile at home, if some type of citywide catastrophe trapped me in the house I’d have enough reading material for at least a year.

message 31: by blackrose (new)

1209800 Usually I'm pretty good at only getting one or two books at a time, but there was a 3 for 4 thing at Amazon... and then I had this coupon... and, well, things happened.

Plus I've been boredom/procrastinating shopping a lot, lately, and I've run out of clothing sites to window shop at, so there's that, too. *grins*

message 32: by Tracy (new)

1921489 Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is great! Ok, so I never read the original and I can't say how much Seth changed, but it was definitely fun to read. And apparently it was so popular, that the publisher has someone doing another mixup on Sense and Sensibility.

My recently acquired books:

Masters of Fantasy
Solaris Book of New Fantasy
Magic Bites
Red-Headed Stepchild
Dhampir
Demons Are Forever

Probably others, as well, depending how far back "recent" refers to.

message 33: by blackrose (new)

1209800 Dhampir was good, though I was disappointed in the series overall. Hope you have better luck with it.

message 34: by blackrose (new)

1209800 Just picked up Extraordinary Engines The Definitive Steampunk Anthology and Dark Tower Treachery, the latter mostly for my SO, but I'm sure I'll read it, too, as I've read the rest of the series.

I didn't actually mean to pick up anything while I was browsing the bookstore, seeing as I have enough already, but I saw EE there looking all forlorn and lonely, and I just had to give it a home. *grins*

message 35: by Sydney (new)

2523744 I just bought Darkness Calls(Hunter Kiss 2) by Marjorie M. Liu and On the Prowl: Tales of an Urban Werewolf by Karen MacInerney. I read the first Hunter Kiss book and wasn't that impressed, so I am hoping that the story gets better! And I will say, that I'm excited about On the Prowl...it sounds like its gonna be interesting:)

Have you read Magic Bites yet?? I loved it! Its one of my favs...hope you like it!!

1632550 I borrow what I can, since I work at a library. Currently reading Storm Front, by Jim Butcher, which was nominated for September and I'm enjoying it although it's really a guy story by a guy for guys, because the main character is so likeable and the magic is so ad hoc zany. Plus the supporting characters are pretty good, like [Spoiler Alert:]

Bob the Computer/muse.

And now to the point, I've just ordered Extraordinary Engines from another library in our system. I'm soo curious about all the punk genres. I only remember Mirrorshades, which I thought was a bit harsh. I'm hoping that Steampunk is like the short story that was in Analog back in the 80's about the "Babbage Engines" in Washington D.C. that controlled reality with mechanical computers. (Sort of like the Glooper, Ankh-Morpork's hydraulic computer, which creates value without the headaches of day-trading.)

message 38: by blackrose (new)

1209800 Steampunk is one of those genres where I think the ideas behind it are often better than the execution of the stories they're presented in. I've only read a few Steampunk works, and haven't been particularly blown away by any of them - but I'm ever hopeful, so maybe EE will offer something a bit better than the usual.

That said - I did quite enjoy New Amsterdam by Elizabeth Bear, which is more a mystery with a Steampunk background. I liked it enough to want to read more of her work, though I haven't gotten around to it, yet.

Good tip, thanks. I've just reserved "Fast Forwards" anthology, which apparently contains something of Elizabeth Bear's - and a new George Zabrowski, who's an old fave of mine. *S*

Have you ever stumbled across Goblin Moon and The Gnome's Engine by Teresa Edgerton? Little gems, that came out awhile back and stayed way too invisible...sort of precursor to Steampunk, and too odd, in their time, to quite catch a wide readership. They deserve to be found, now. Really good reads, or at least, they stayed with me. Theresa is still writing, now, but not under that byline.

message 42: by Barbm1020 (new)

1632550 I see by her website that she also goes by Madeline Howard. Certainly sounds worth a try.

message 43: by blackrose (new)

1209800 Never heard of them. I'll check it out, thanks.

message 44: by Megan (new)

1369783 I just got a couple books by Peter S. Beagle-- A Fine and Private Place, and The Folk of the Air. Also a boxed set of Robert Heinlein books-- Have Spacesuit- Will Travel, Spaceman Jones, etc.
I'm pretty excited about those. I also recently bought Abarat by Clive Barker, but I think I'm going to return it. I thought I'd really like it, but it's a bit on the surreal side for my tastes.

message 45: by Catja (new)

2562245 Since the bookstores in this country don't have the biggest selection of English/American books which is the only books I read, I only buy about one book when I am at the bookstore if I even buy any books.
But anyways..
The last book I bought was Freya North's 'Pillow Talk'.

message 46: by Teacup (new)

Nophoto-u-25x33 Due to the high prices on foreign paperbacks in Sweden, I buy most of my books online these days, usually at the amazon marketplace.
The last fantasy I bought was the Red Wolf Conspiracy by Robert VS Redick, which I'm reading right now.
Earlier this week I ordered The Lies of Locke Lamora but haven't received it yet.

2339201 Being new to the Fantasy genre, I bought a bunch of books at a great used book shop yesterday. I kind of figured I would start with the ones I have been hearing raves about and give Fantasy a true shot by actually going full on into series. So, help me decide what I should knock back next!

I am reading The Sword Of Shannara right now, so I picked up Elfstones Of Shannara and Wishsong OF Shannara. I bought these mainly to have the original trilogy, and because I did have them as a kid, but never read them.

I also grabbed Robert Jordan's The Eye Of The World.

Then the one I was most interested in:
A Game Of Thrones, A Clash Of Kings and A Storm Of Swords by George R.R. Martin. I now come to find out that Martin seems to have really dropped a turkey with Feast Of Crows, so I am not too sure I want to dive into that one as much as previously, and think I might want to give The Wheel Of Time it's fair shot.

Now, keep in mind that I also still have yet to read The Hobbit and the second two parts to The Lord Of The Rings.

Maybe I need to start a poll! LOL!
