Strum, strum. Out of tune.
With great enthusiasm,
guitar matches voice.
Late on Christmas day,
bridge for amplification
discovered in bag.
"This needs to go on!"
But...our boy doesn't like it.
It might chip the paint.
So, the sound is dull,
not resonating nor tuned.

mom understands not

Christmas morning comes
son thrilled to have his 'lectric
guitar. It is red!
Dad starts tuning it
"I don't care what it sounds like"
says boy. Mom's all smiles.
Evergreen - tall, proud
stood sentinel over gifts
Soon will be kindling
Fire just punishment
for abandoning its post
on Christmas morning
Shattered ornaments,
Hardwood floor gouged, pine-sticky
sharp, sad wet mess made.
(True story: our tree
fell over, fully trimmed, lit.
Dad chopped it to bits.)
