1457164 Yippie!

I am so excited for you! I know that I LOVE my new bathroom. I have always wanted to soak in a tub while reading a book, now, thanks to my inline heater, I get to do just that :]

Looking forward to sharing completed bathroom pictures with you :]

Wishing you and yours a most magical of holiday seasons.

1742901 We have walls in the master bathroom.

I've never seen anything so wonderful was four green walls and a ceiling... which means I can finally stop using the space heater just to keep the master bedroom warm enough to sleep in at night.

The backer-boards for the shower surround go in on Friday, along with the base for the floor tile.

Sadly, the vanity and the glass shower surround won't arrive until after the first of the year, but at least the walls will be textured and painted, the light fixtures in place, the floor tile installed, and the toilet once again functional ... all by the end of next week

Progress is a good thing.

1457164 Love the title. I am always looking for a new "read."

Getting burned out on vampires and YA series. I just finished The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. It was very gross in parts. Rather like Dan Brown meets Stephen King. Dan Brown is an author I would love to interview. His mind is so wacked :]

WIshing you a most wonderful holiday season.

1457164 Wow, I am impressed.

As to the shower doors. I just put up a curtain for now, as I could not afford the doors that I wanted, and didn't want to buy something that I knew I would not like.

Great Job so far. Looks like you are right on track :]

1742901 Hi Dee;

Glad to hear your reno is done with and life at the hobbit house can get back to normal (whatever that is)...

As to our renovation?

The tear out work is finished. We're waiting;

1) for the plumber to come and move pipes
2) the HVAC guy to come out and move/install new duct work
3) for the recycler to come and remove the old loose insulation ....

So that we can take the ceilings down and

4) for the electrician to come and and rewire the room...

Then we can

1)re-insulate,
2) put in the new floor ( 12/8)
3) put up walls and ceiling and new pocket door wall
(12/16)
4) texture and paint walls and ceiling
5) install new electrical fixtures and lights
6) put down tile
7) install the new vanity (if it ever gets here)
8) install pocket doors (if they ever get here)... deferred. At 750 dollars a door for two 15 inch wide MDF with frosted plexiglass panel doors?

We're going to frame for it and hold on the doors until I can find a reasonable price.

9) put in the new shower
10) reinstall the toilet

... and if it's done by Christmas I will be in shock.

Happy Holidays to you was well and hope the next book is coming along.

1457164 Love your reading The Pages for small wages Blog Gwen. It is always fun and informative :]

Waaaaaaaaaaaaay belated B-day wishes. Geez I am at least six months behind on everything.

How is the renovations going?

Just moved all my office stuff from downstairs to my new office upstairs. Well everything but what is in the closet. I don't even want to think about that.

It was fun to be done with the majority of the painting and tile work, etc. in time for NaNoWriMo.

I do not envy you the job of trying to get everything done by Christmas. We had company over to the addition this past weekend, and it was fun to show off the house. Made all the tears over the summer seem worthwhile :]

Wishing you an uneventful reno and a most wonderful Christmas season, and a Happy New Year!

1742901 Sound of banging, followed by loud crash, followed by a muttered "I know it's back here somewhere..."

There is a bright red flash followed by a puff of smoke from behind the ovens.

The lights suddenly come back on.

Hey! Found it.

2298148 Getting all of that done this time of year sounds like very hard work indeed. Is it full winter where you live too? I wish I could help in some way!

Just think about the perfect bathroom you will have when it's finished!

1742901 Hi Teresa.

Yes, the birthday was lovely.

Gawd but I wish it were done.

The tear out work is finished. We're waiting;

9) put in the new shower
10) reinstall the toilet

... and if it's done by Christmas I shall be amazed.

...and HoHoHo... No! I don't even want to think about the finished cost.

1742901 The rattle of keys, a click of the lock and the sound of the overhead fluorescent lights coming on.

Puts out the OPEN sign, walks over to check the cryogenic freezer, the reactor controls on the ovens and presses the start button on the automatic coffee maker.

Sighs, steps over to desk in the corner, flicks on the plasma display. kicks shoes off and slips them under the desk, and logs in.

'Welcome Back, Gwen.'

"Good Evening to you too, Dave. It's nice to be back."

message 542: by Teresa (new)

2298148 Thank you so much for posting that link, Gwendolyn! I had a good laugh reading it. If all those words and phrases were banished, my morning paper would have noting more to offer than advertisements, horoscopes and weather reports.

message 541: by Paul (new)

1853928 Nice one. I could add: economic climate; the use of nouns as verbs e.g. motor racing - he hasn't pitted yet, athletics - he hasn't medalled yet; sense, as in 'what's your sense of the groundswell (another candidate) of opinion?'; year on year; at this moment in time; dawn swoop (why can't people swoop at a more sensible hour?) and 'decent hard working families'. Since when were decent and hard-working complementary adjectives?

I'm just ploughing through previous lists to see if any more of my favourites have appeared.

message 540: by Gwendolyn (new)

1742901 On Dec. 31, 1975, former Lake Superior State University Public Relations Director Bill Rabe and his colleagues cooked up an idea to banish overused words and phrases.

Rabe distributed the list on New Year's Day. In the following weeks, when nominations for the next year's list came pouring into his office, Rabe said he knew the list would endure.

He was correct.

The LSSU PR office still receives thousands of nominations every year from people who never seem to tire of talking about words and language.

And so, without further ado, the 2009 Banished Word List

1742901 Dateline Indonesia;

It will be a long time before life here in Sumatra is anything near normal.

The supplies are flowing and much needed equipment for power and water treatment is beginning to get where it is most needed...

Meanwhile, although there has been no widespread outbreak of disease we are seeing and treating an increasing number cases of diarrhoea, dengue fever, tetanus and respiratory infections.

TTFN.

1853928 Gwen, I am so in awe of you. And that is said without any of my usual sarcasm. Love you, and keep safe.

message 537: by Gwendolyn (new)

1742901 Wendy & Paul;

You know what they say about having a job you love...

Well, the hours are lousy, the conditions are terrible and forget the pay.

But for us, it is all about the lives of the people we can help. That is why we do this and for no other reason.

The psychiatrists and psychologists that make up the majority of our medical team have the worst of it in situations like this, although the medical/surgical tent has been busy all day as well.

It's a little after midnight and I've just finished my reports. Supplies are getting to us, finally, although it is still more of a trickle than a rush, but at least the supplies are finding their way to us and to the people who need them most desperately.

Other teams from other NGO's are hard on our heels. They'll be dealing with the immediate infrastructure problems and providing a better line of supply.

In the morning we will be packing up and moving on, yet again to another location.

TTFN.

message 536: by Paul (new)

1853928 I echo Wendy's comments.

1139740 Good job over there Gwen!

You are wonderful!

I hope the destruction doesn't get to you too much. I know it must be very difficult.

message 534: by Gwendolyn (new)

1742901 Thanks Dee.

It's just a bit after noon here in Sumatra.

We're still slowly moving north, providing what help we can as we do our assessments and send in our reports. From what we know, the needed relief supplies are piling up in Padang, but what is getting out to us is minimal... it barely gets us through a day, and sometimes not even then.

The NGO coordinators are promising that the situation will begin to improve today.

Part of the team packed up around 7am this morning and began moving toward the next target point. Our part of the team is packed and we'll be moving on to join them in about half an hour.

TTFN!

Gwen

1742901 Paul, immortalised once again...

Sunday Funnies

Henry's right. In the military, they use it to the point where it gets old in a hurry.. although I have to admit I'd really hate being Sir'd, and being called by your rank is equally stupid.

Man salutes... "Colonel."

I return salute. "Captain."

"Colonel, I need to discuss something of an ... um... personal nature?"

"Yes Captain?"

"Well Colonel, it's like this..."

... Ad Nauseam.

I prefer 'Doc' as opposed to Ma'am .... but in the armed forces there is a matter of rank and respect for it... so there's no really good solution except to stick with what works.

In the civilian world I can deal with it when kids use it. Far better than 'Yo B****' or some of the alternatives.

... but my friends call me Gwen. Okay Henry?

Hugs!

Oh Renee, we meant on the military. Female officers are addressed as "ma'am" by enlisted soldiers.

I never use "Lady" or "ma'am". Now that I think about it, I have no idea what I use.

Do I ever talk to females I don't work with or know?

Hum, this is getting depressing. Going. Now.

2012116 How about 'Lady' I get that a lot. Someone called me Maam just a few weeks ago and he's still pulling his head from his ass. So, just avoid addressing where possible. With your accent, you could get away with 'Beautiful' or something like that without sounding too slimy.

Do you really hate the "ma'am" thing? It's a weird title to address anyone with. I hope they change that in the next decade or so.
