Are there any graphic novel fans out there? What would you recommend to somebody, who is just starting to get into the genre and doesn't know where to start?
So far I've really gotten into the graphic novelist Jason. I've also recently read Abandoned Cars and Watchmen which was incredible. It was so complex and it gives readers a lot to think about. Anywho, I would like to branch out. Suggestions?
P.S. Also, for anyone familiar with the books mentioned above, I don't have such a bleak outlook on life. Kind of, but not really.
V for Vendetta
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (both Alan Moore)
the Sin City series (Frank Miller)
The Sandman (Neil Gaiman), Preludes and Nocturnes is the first one.
Fables (Bill Willingham) is interesting.
Maus (Art Spiegelman) and Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi) are both acclaimed as well.
Stephen King's The Dark Tower series is being done into comic and then turned into graphic novel. The are made by Stephen King, Peter David, Robin Furth, and Richard Isanove. I recommend them. The first one is called: The Gunslinger Born
The second is called: The Long Road Home.
The third graphic novel comes out in April and, I think, is called: Treachery
My wife would recommend Bone by Jeff Smith. I think there are like 10 novels of them or you can get them all jammed together in one gigantic book.
My kids absolutely adore the Bone series. I couldn't get past the first book, so I guess I would classify it as YA, but certainly worth a try. If you are a book "buyer" as opposed to a book "borrower", I would highly recommend the complete volume. $40 as opposed to $130 or so purchased seperately.
I seem to ahve a small problem with th ekind of books. I mean I see them as fiction and then like crime, thriller, humor, romance, science fiction and fantasy. But being on TNBBC i found out I actually like historical fiction but just thought about it as fiction. I liked a lot Stardust and want to read v for vendetta, which apparently seems to be graphic novels adn where for me jsut fiction....
I am learning new things about books, myself ....but it is difficult to realize which sub genre they are.
