Me too! I bought it but then I went and got a bunch of library books so they got moved to the top of my TBR and Angela's Ashes is sitting gathering dust ...

message 304: by Jeane (new)

1530627 I really should start reading Angela's ashes for this...the april one will be there and won't have started it yet...

369169 It's ok Nancy.
Take your time and get used to the threads.
I'm happy to see you are making an effort :)

message 302: by Nancy (new)

1702471 woops, i've made one mistake after another tonight. sorry.

message 301: by Susanna (new)

1109068 We've already chosen March's reads, Nancy - though I think voting on April's is coming up soon.

message 300: by Nancy (new)

1702471 CAT 2: Mary Karr's brilliant memoir, THE LIAR'S CLUB, about her Irish father. Mary Karr is a poet who writes very accessible prose...and her memoir is the standard by which others are judged.

2105668 Woo hoo!!!!!

message 298: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 Im thinking of starting the noms on Monday. Then voting can start on the weekend.

message 297: by Fiona (new)

1356469 when do we vote for april?

Oooh! Ok! Thanks! :)

369169 at the very begining of the thread.... we had regular fiction/non fiction, and then the catagory of the month was irish author or a book that takes place in Ireland.

message 294: by Brittany (new)

2105668 Erm.. I know this is closed and all, but what are the categories? Is there a section on here that tells me?

message 293: by Lisa Julianna (new)

1540288 me too Jackie

message 292: by Kandice (new)

1396160 I actually really want to read Fool, and that would be a good excuse. If you nominate, I'll vote:)

message 291: by Jackie (new)

1176067 If you do humor I already know who I'm gonna nominate: Christopher Moore- Fool.

I read this book and I was actually really unimpressed by it. Have you read it? What did you think of it?

message 289: by Liesl (new)

637576 Unfortunately, I won't be joining you for these reads. I've already read Water for Elephants (loved it!) and tried Angela's Ashes, but was bored to tears and couldn't finish it. Hopefully, I'll be joining you all for next month's books.

message 288: by Mosca (new)

1837675 April 22 is Earth Day.

Just a thought.

message 287: by Susan (new)

1435598 I just read Water For Elephants a few weeks ago, I loved it! So...I mooched Angela's Ashes and should get it in a few days. I'm looking forward to reading it. But since it is such a 'heavy' book topic, I think the idea of a humorous read for April is a great idea. I would love a good laugh!

message 286: by Jeane (new)

1530627 I should think about tricks on the 1st of april but thinking about fiona made me think about taxes... think tax year starts in april in england..... but don't worry that is NOT a suggestion.

message 285: by Fiona (new)

1356469 Oh oh I meant as suggestions for a topic/theme!

message 284: by Rebbie (new)

1919101 I'd really like this because I don't know which books to choose for humor. Sometimes people tell me about books they think are funny, but then when I read them, I---duh---don't get it. :)
Anything will help at this point!

message 283: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 Fiona, are you making a suggestion for next month? or saying that they dont make good conversation topics? me confused.

message 282: by Fiona (new)

1356469 Or an animal theme, or YA theme.

message 281: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 yeah, I thought keeping the religious stuff outta there might be the safest thing. You should all know me by now...

Politics and Religion a good topic do not make!

We could have lots of fun with next months nomination rounds this way!

message 280: by Susanna (new)

1109068 Yes, I like that idea too.

message 279: by Jessica (new)

1133601 Lori, I like that idea for April Fool's Day. It's a themed read without touching on the topic of religion/Easter.

message 278: by Lori, Super Mod (last edited Feb 28, 2009 04:29PM) (new)

369169 btw, lets get our thinking caps on for next month...

What do we think about our second catagory being "humor or joke" related in honor of April Fools Day? It could be a funny novel, or a book written by a comedian. So it could be nominations like Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Last Straw (which is humorous) Brain Droppings (which is humorous, and written by a comedian) or Shopgirl A Novella (which is written by a comedian, but not necessarily funny).....

message 277: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 *********Discussion threads are opened. I am going to be working tomorrow, and if I dont do it now, and go to bed early... You will have to wait all day!

Happy reading everyone, and I hope to see those threads fill up fast!

message 276: by Shannon (new)

1001214 I just started Water for Elephants yesterday (I've been out of town and haven't been able to check in here)! I am so excited for the discussions as I am really enjoying it so far. Maybe I'll get to read both books this month.

I own both, so I'm excited..lol
I've read Angela's Ashes, although it was quite a while ago. One of my favorites.
I will move Water For Elephants up my list, and I'm sure I'll get it read before the end of March.

message 274: by April (new)

1405910 I read Angela's Ashes awhile ago and don't really want to re-read it, the first go was depressing enough.

However, I will hopefully obtain and participate in Water For Elephants!

message 273: by Kandice (new)

1396160 Da a da da... Well that was supposed to represent the theme song of TZ.

message 272: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 Am i stuck in the twilight zone?
Seriously.
I mean it.

Am I not being clear when I announce what phase we are at? The title is changed for crying out loud!

Sorry...end of rant!

message 271: by Cynthia (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I have read water for elephants, but I am looking forward to read Angela's ashes!

I already get that depressing feeling over me jsut picking up Angela's ashes and that is the only reason I have never read it....I wonder if it would jsut be a feeling or if it would get worse with the reading.

message 267: by alicia (new)

668363 I read Angela's Ashes years ago I remember liking it alot.Even though i to wanted to slap the mother several times the father to i might add.But i love how he kind of gives such a depressing story some laughter as well.I will try and re read this.

message 266: by Kathy (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I have heard that "Water for Elephants" is really good. I look forward to reading it. I don't know much about "Angela's Ashes" so hopefully I'm in for a treat.

message 265: by Carol (new)

2046576 I´m sad Angela´s Ashes has won.. It´s just TOO depressing for a Summer :D
I´ll try to participate on April´s Group Reads ^^

message 264: by Marie (new)

2036011 Hi, I am new to the group and still trying to navigage my way around. I read both books and really enjoyed "Water for Elephants". "Angela's Ashes" drove me nuts! I wanted to slap the mother through most of the book!

message 263: by Beth Ann (new)

1679103 I read Angela's Ashes a few years ago, or whenever the movie came out. I loved the book, not the movie so much. I read it follow up book Tis, was alright, but no where near as good as Angela's Ashes. His brother wrote a book too, can't think of the name right off, he's not as good as a writer as Frank McCormick. I keep meaning to pick up Water for Elephants, I want to read it, but it really doesn't peak my interest all that much.

message 262: by JuliAnna (last edited Feb 25, 2009 04:13PM) (new)

1269729 I've read them both, as well. I'm not up for re-reading them, but I may still check in on the discussion.

I have already read both - Water for Elephants is AMAZING, Angela's Ashes is a bit depressing but still good. Enjoy everyone - I will be doing some major reading for the Spring Challenge!

Rora - I'll be reading The Poor Mouth soon also. I'll be using it for my Irish book for the Spring Challenge.

message 259: by Rebbie (new)

1919101 I've read Water for Elephants and have met Sara Gruen several times--she's in my online writer's group also, so I will be joining that discussion.
Angela's Ashes is one I've been wanting to read. I get a copy and join in.
I THINK I can find the threads on the site now :) I must be super tech-dum!

message 258: by JG (new)

48404 I picked up Angela's Ashes at a library sale about 6 months ago and haven't read it yet, so I'm excited to read it with everyone!

I'm interested in Water for Elephants, but I've got so many other books lying around here waiting to be read that I don't know if I'll pick it up. I might though.

message 257: by Joanna (new)

1953417 I think I'll read Water for elephants, bnut I'm not sure I'm in the frame of mind for Angela's Ashes. We'll see.
