Denise Mitnick I didn't like the book. When I read, I ask myself the question, am I better off for having taken the time here---with this book? My answer was a profound, NO.

message 2: by Castor (new)

Castor Troy why didn't you like it, I'm very tempted to read, but not totally convince

Anna Loved the book, the next two were good as well.
The first parts of the book were hard to get through. but once you get past those parts the storyline was great and a very interesting read. It was hard to put down once it peaks your interest, worth the boring and tough start...

Jeni My response is generally, yes. I did like the books. I thought they were well-thought-out and engaging. My only advice is to translate distances into "a long way" and money into "a lot of money" and it makes the whole thing easier.

Paul Harmon Loved the book, so did my wife. Great mystery and story. First couple chapters were a little difficult but as soon as Lisbeth was introduced it was hard to put down. Movies stunk though...completely changed story.

Stacy Liked the book a lot, but my biggest recommendation is - read the second in the series, "Girl Who Played With Fire."

Matthew I liked the story and the characters, but my biggest problem was not knowing a single thing about the region or how to pronounce proper nouns!

Charlotte I loved the book and found it hard to put down - I am now waiting to read the next two......edit, I have now read all three books, they did not disappoint but the first of the trilogy is still the very best !

Yvonne Meh, this one was okay, I cared about the characters and the mystery, but overall I wondered HOW it remained on the bestsellers lists. The second one was painful - I'd lost interest in the characters. The last... I can count the number of books I abandoned on one hand, and Hornet's Nest is the middle finger.

message 10: by Emma (new) - rated it 2 stars

Emma Hated it with a passion. Really really didn't like it. It was overly wordy, misguided, easily lost, needlessly violent and masochistic, and overall a very unfulfilling read.

message 11: by Mary (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mary I did not 'like' the book, but like Castor, felt the unpleasant parts were necessary to understand what was going on. I think it it necessary to throw the spotlight on secret violence that is tolerated by society, whether is is against women, children some minority group or any other group that has less power. I did not read the second and third books; I felt that after the first, I had had enought. The book was well written and readable.

Donnica Anna wrote: "Loved the book, the next two were good as well.

Lord have mercy yes.. I agree... it's a hard read at first but once youoush through it...it's great...

Linda Moore I also loved the book, both first and second. I feel there was a lot of things that should be addressed about how women are treated in some places and maybe this book can help that. It was a good read and I even liked the beginning. Some thought it was boring but I may be strange because it only made me want to find out more about what the two were talking about and I did. I liked all the characters but did find pronouncing their names very hard. So I just sorta skimmed the names and pronounced them the way they sounded to me. lol After all it was reading to myself so that was not very important. I personally would not like to visit Sweden after reading the book though. Don't think it sounds to safe for women.

message 14: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Fallon I liked the book, I had a lot of people say they could not get through it, I told them to skip the very beginning and go back and read it later when they got into the book. Most came back and said, it was great and the suggestion to skip the first part really helped

message 15: by Ian (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ian Miller I enjoyed it reasonably well, and I felt that I had some sense of the settings, but I left it feeling that it did not really live up to the hype. But then again, what would?

Carey Shea I loved all three of the books. I couldn't put them down. The second one was my least favorite but it doesn't mean I didn't like it.

message 17: by Jenni (last edited Dec 07, 2012 02:42am) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jenni Wickham The crime committed is yucky and so is the criminal, but other than that it is a good book. Didn't like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo getting raped, but it *is* the reality that children, particularly girls, in care do get raped and abused sexually; so better to have the reality out in the open to discuss rather than brush it under the carpet. The character formation of the girl is good, and Bomkwist is weaker, but okay; but the other characters are bland.

Contrary to some of the readers here I really liked the first part of the book, the relationship with Dragan and Salander's work at his company etc. I thought this part was crucial to the rapid development of Salander's character.

I managed to guess at the very chapter introducing Vangar's mission and the suspects who the culprit would be.

Jennifer Hutchison Loved all three of them and after re-reading them, I still love them.

Afifah I loved this first book, and cant wait to read the second and third.

Nicole Tanner I found it very difficult to get through the first half of the book. Once I did, it was smooth sailing from there. I absolutely could not put book 2 or 3 down. Fantastic!

Catherine Byrne I just couldn't get into this book. I watched the film, but again, It took me a lot of concentration to realise what was going on. My daughter assured me that I had to persevere with the book and sfter the first 50 pages it would get griping. Fraid I prefer to be gripped much sooner than that!

Emily Thorne i found this book really hard to get into but i brought all three so made myself read it. the first half of the first book is really boring but also very important to read is if you don't, the rest of the book and the two that follow wont make sense. But once the book gets going and trust me it does it is an amazing book and very gripping. i would recommend it but also warn people how hard the first half of the first book is to read.

Janese Jackson I loved the entire series, I found Lisbeth to be one of the most compelling characters I've come across in a long time. Blomkvist was a little generic, but still likable. The mystery in book one was good but the storyline in books 2-3 kept me gripped! A great read, I wish the author had lived to complete his planned 10 book series.

Chloe I would agree, it's really hard to get into. It took me a long time to get through the first 50 pages. Then once the story line is introduced, it keeps you hooked from the start of the action all the way to the exciting end. I will also say that you shouldn't waste your time reading a book that you don't think you will be interested in. Don't just read it because it's popular. If the first half of the book was better than this book would one of my favorites, but I can't overlook how lame the first part was.

Linda Neuman I enjoyed all three movies, only read the first book. Read it before seeing the movies. I agree with Chloe that it was very hard to get into. Almost did not continue to read except that some friends and family members were raving about it. It got good later but it was too long a wait. Not interested in reading the other two books.

Janebbooks It's to the book's credit that people are still reading the first of Stieg Larsson's Millenium novels. I thought it was the best mystery I had ever read when I finished it. But I like libel lawsuits and people missing for 40 years. Blomkvist was my favorite character in the book and Daniel Craig played him perfectly. I didn't read the other two books.

If you can find it...the NYT 2008 book review by Alex Berenson (now award-winning thriller writer) is very, very interesting.

message 27: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I will admit. at first I could not get into the book. However when I saw the first movie, I really liked it so I thought I'd give the book another try and it was much easier to get through as were the next two. I would recommend, and I never do this because we all know book into movie rarely works, but see the movie first, and not the American version, then read the books.

Chelsea I'm still torn on this book. I really liked the plot because it was suspenseful and well thought out. However, if this book was about 200 pages shorter, I don't think it would have lost any substance and I probably wouldn't have had such a hard time getting through it. There are whole page passages describing things like what people are wearing or eating, or the entire 411 on electronics or vehicles. It got to be a little to much. I'm still debating taking on the 2nd and 3rd books.

Derek Birks I liked aspects of all three books though I think they got weaker from first to last. In all three books there are large tracts of pretty uninteresting prose. The saving grace of the books is Lisbeth. Her character made the books worth reading.

message 30: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne I didn't dislike the book, just wasn't one I would read again or go to the movie to see it.

Janebbooks Jeanne....the American movie with Daniel Craig as Blomkvist was excellent....a libel suit....an heiress missing for 40 years....great plot stuff.
Too much emphasis on the strange character of Lizbeth really obscured the absolutely great mystery that Larsson gave us....

Try again...please
Jane

Jacqueline Rhoades I loved this book both as a mystery and as a character study of Lisbeth. The evolution of her character through this and the next two books was fascinating. Though the first chapters were slower than I'm used to, by the time the story picked up its pace I had a sense of time and place and I thought the descriptions and names only added to that. The background was necessary to understand (as much as the author allowed) the motivation for Lisbeth.
I, too, am sorry there will be no more. These books weren't standard fare and perhaps that's why I found them so intriguing.

Tytti Linda wrote: "I personally would not like to visit Sweden after reading the book though. Don't think it sounds to safe for women."

Frankly speaking, I think Sweden is one of the safest countries in the world for a woman.

Joyce I'd heard all the buzz about these books and wasn't interested in reading them due to the subject matter. However, a friend gave me the first 2 books, so I felt obliged to give them a try. I loved the first book - especially the mystery. I could not put it down. I found the second book a little more tedious to get through, and I was very upset with the ending. It abruptly stops, and picks up in the 3rd book. In retrospect, I see that the 2nd book was necessary in setting up the background for the conclusion of the trilogy.

message 35: by Mary (new) - rated it 1 star

Mary I didnt like it. I knew who the bad guy was right away and there were too many unnecessary scenes with Slander and the mc and so on.

Sheila These books are all brilliant!!! I WILL re read them. They were amazing and the Swedish films were excellent!!!

message 37: by Evan (last edited Feb 19, 2013 01:44pm) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Evan Geller Enjoyed all three books, though the names and locations bordered on tedious at times. This trilogy is as much a testament to the importance of a skilled translator as it is to Larsson himself.

Linda Moore Sorry but I don't believe ANYONE knew who the bad guy was before it was meant to be revealed. I have read lots of books where you could figure that out but in these books the only way would be to cheat and look ahead. They are wonderful, and Larson was a brilliant writer. Of course the names and places were hard to read because it was in Sweden and if you are not Swedish you have a harder time with their names and locations. As far as figuring these books out.. NO WAY.. I loved the stories and there was not to much Slander. She was after all the one that it was mainly about, besides the owners of the magazine and the bastard who was such a jerk. If you only read the first book you would have NEVER figured out who was the bad one as it just did not focus enough on him to give away what he had done and he was abused also. So no, I don't believe it. Don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I read and reread this series and there is just no way that you or anyone knew who the bad guy was. To bad the last book will not be published because of Larson's selfish family. His girlfriend stood by him through everything and lost him to a heart attack and they didn't want to share anything with her. I would not give them that last manuscript either. But she could take it and have it published under her and his name maybe. She should get a lawyer and check into that. Larson would be so unhappy to know that his family was so selfish I think, after reading the books. I can't believe anyone would not like them, but there are books that I can't stand and others would not understand why so I have to understand that everyone does not like this set either.. But they are GREAT.. And very hard or impossible to figure out who to really hate for the right reasons. Like who killed people and who caused others to run away and live a life away from the ones they did love.... All's well that ends well though. I did love that Salander could crack any computer. She was awesome at what she did and who she got even with and how she got even.. More women should be that awesome and courageous..

Brett Bydairk Are you referring to the "4th book" that's supposedly on his girlfriend's hard drive? If so, she has already publicly stated that it's only some notes, not enough to make a book.

message 40: by Rob (last edited Feb 27, 2013 04:33am) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rob I loved every single paragraph of the book. Couldn't put it down. And I also happen to agree with most of Linda's comments (message 39).

message 41: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I loved the books but I had watched the Swedish films first and think that did help me get through the boring bits. As people have said, the first part of the first book is hard going but once you get to know the characters you will want to know what happens. It's a superb series

Linda Moore Rob wrote: "I loved every single paragraph of the book. Couldn't put it down. And I also happen to agree with most of Linda's comments (message 39)."

Thank you. I love the book and the other ones also. I read about the 4th book on a site that was dedicated to the author so I do believe that there was a 4th book. It said plainly that because of how his father and brother did his long time live in girlfriend she would not give them the last manuscript. It has been on here also way back sometime last year I think. Great reading and loved the books. I have not read the last one due to family sickness and had to read two books for a friend that I am loving but will get to it next. I would love it is the 4th book could be published.. Thank you again Rob. I meant well. lol

Jason Lee This book is brilliant. Period.
