If you've read Rutherfurd before you know he develops families in place of characters, and part of the fun of his books is going through history with those families. I read Princes of Ireland a year or more ago and just recently read Rebels of Ireland and I wish I had read them back-to-back. I could enjoy the individual characters in Rebels but I kinda lost the feeling for the families having not read Princes right before.
