What are you reading now?
Here it is, the obligatory "currently reading" thread! Feel free to share!
~ What are you reading right now and what do you think of it so far?
~ What are you about to start reading and why?
~ What did you just finish reading and would you recommend it?
I'm reading Cornelia Funke's Inkheart and absolutely loving it. I bought it on a whim, not knowing anything about the movie or the series - but it sucked me in from the very first page and has had no trouble keeping my attention. I'm about 3/4 through and anxious to see how the story ends!
I am having a rough time settling into a good YA right now. Airhead was shorter on content than Cabot usually is, Night People was good but I wasn't in the mood for the rabidly villainous villain. The Mystery of the Third Lucretia is promising. I think there are too many explanations (Art Museums have guards? No way!) But the characters are engaging, so I will stick with it a bit longer. I have Dopesick on my nightstand. I can always tear through that if I get desparate. Myers never disappoints.
I am currently reading Unwind. It is the first Shusterman novel I have read. I have been disappointed by several of my favorite authors lately, so I am hopeing that this one is not another let down. I am anxiously awaiting several new YA novels that will be released in March. I am a teacher, and I am very sad that I have nothing to recommend to my students right now.
Did you enjoy Twilight and The Host? I definately recommend The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, its a great page turner!
I love the Twilight series. They aren't my all time favorite books, but they are good. I am waiting on the library copy of The Host to come back so I can read it. I'll check out the Hunger Games soon. Thank you for the recommendation.
I thought The Host was absolutely gripping - even better than the Twilight series (which are not my all time favorites either, Gina). I'm sure you'll love it.I'm looking forward to reading The Hunger Games - I've heard very good things about it. Right now I'm in the middle of Amelia Atwater-Rhodes's Den of Shadows series. Sadly, I'm not impressed so far...
Gina wrote: "I just got my ARC of City of Glass. I hope to start reading it tomorrow!"Oooh, so have you started it? How is it?
I'm looking forward to starting the Mortal Instruments series myself. In fact, I may pick up the first book today. :]
I'm currently stuck in the middle of two series: Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' Den of Shadows (book 2) and Patrick Carman's Land of Elyon (book 1). I'm thinking they're going to go on my "stalled" shelf because neither is really holding my interest right now.
I loved the book. You should definately get all three at the same time because you will want to know what will happen next. I have picked up the Atwater-Rhodes books a few times, but I did not think it I would enjoy them. They seems to slow paced for me.
The Atwater-Rhodes books ARE slow paced. I'd heard such good things about them that I thought I would enjoy them...but halfway through the second in the series, I found I just couldn't stay interested. I did pick up City of Bones though - I'm excited about reading it. :]I just finished reading Revelations by Melissa De La Cruz (third in the Blue Bloods series). I thought it was much much better than the first two - the story is finally getting interesting.
I liked Revelations less than the previous two but only because I figured out who B was in two. I am ready for #4.
I am anxiously awaiting Melissa Marr's new book right now.
I justed finished Stargazer and In the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Stargazer was good, but In The Forest just wasn't my style.
I figured out who B was in book 2 as well...but I still thought 3 was better. I too am ready for #4.And I'm so anxiously awaiting Melissa Marr's new book as well! I'm terribly excited about reading more of Aislyn and Seth's story...and I'm really hoping she does another book about Leslie and Niall too. I really want them to get together. :)
Those two couples just fascinate me. Marr jumped to the top of my favorite authors list in no time.
As for me, I just finished Hunted, #5 in the House of Night series. I hate the writing style the authors chose for that series, but Hunted had a really good story and I liked it a lot better than the others. Definitely worth a read.
I'm not trudging through Go Ask Alice, but the journal-style is really getting to me. Hopefully I can finish it this weekend and move on to something more exciting.
I finished Hunted this weekend. I liked it more than I thought I would. It was a nice mid-series book. Just enough happened to keep it interesting.
I read Evermore last night. Noel kept the suspense up about a few things, but the book was overall just okay. I will read #2 when it comes out this fall though.
I am planning a visit to the bookstore this week to pick up something new. Our library systerm is a little slow. Any suggestions?
Ahh, our library system is slow too, hence why I've been buying books left and right. Have you read any L. J. Smith? If not, try her Secret Circle series (The Initiation, The Captive part 1 and 2, and The Power). Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor by the same author are great too. Inkheart was interesting, if you haven't read it. And you might check out A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray.A friend of mine has mentioned Unwind and I noticed your first post was about it - what did you think?
I'll start reading Unwind thursday (how does 3 day shipping turn out to be 5?). I have high hopes for it based on the many reviews I've seen. But.. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
I did not like Unwind. I met Shusterman last month. I am glad I took the time to read it , but honestly I liked his story behind the book better than the book itself. I even told him that it was a hard read for me. I did buy Full Tilt after that meeting though and plan to read it soon. He was talking about all of the layers in the book and that sort of thing always intrigues me.
I have read almost all of L.J. Smith’s books. I like her style and am anxiously awaiting book 6 in the Vampire Diaries because I read 5 not knowing there were 2 more to come. It was a big shock that it ended as it did until I read her website. She was very apologetic that the publishers failed to say anything about the next two novels.
We have the Bray books at my school library. Maybe I will just save some money and check them out. Thanks for the recommendation. Let me know what you think of Unwind when you finish it.
I got The Hunger Games from the library today! I'm excited about reading it.Gina, have you read any of The Dark Is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper? If not, I recommend it based on the first book. I just finished it and it was great - I can't wait to get the rest of them.
I'm actually reading a couple of books at the moment. D: None are YA.
Pacific War, 1931-1945 by Saburo Ienaga.
Kitty Raises Hell by Carrie Vaughn.
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea by Jules Verne.
The Streets of Glory by Robert Franck.
The first is for Japanese history class--I actually have an essay due in two days. D:
I started Unwind about 3 days ago...and so far, I really don't care much for it. Nothing about it has really grabbed me. I like the idea behind it but I guess it's Shusterman's writing style that's keeping me from enjoying it. At the point in time, I'm honestly not sure that I'll finish it. It may ended up on the "dropped" list.
YA is a no-go at the moment. D:
I just started Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre. It's pretty good so far.
Afterwards I don't know what I'll be reading. I'll try to start Hunger Games, but I might possibly start a book I ordered from Amazon.com.

I think it would be good in combination with "The Adoration of Jenna Fox." Both stories address similar issues in very different ways. I hope it gets better for you, it is a marvelous story.
~ I am currently reading City of Ashes, book two in it's series, I'm only about 100 pages in I believe.
~ I guess I am starting to read it because I really liked the first book, it had a lot going on so I wasn't ever bored with it. I did a lot of traveling last month and so the tail end of those weeks I was enjoying that I had a great book to bring along!!
~ I've read quite a few books in the past couple of months--just moved and don't know anyone where I'm currently at, so books are my savior :) I just read the Kissed by an Angel trilogy and just really enjoyed the sweet relationship between Ivy and Tristan. It was a new look on things, I thought.

I just couldn't get into it.

I bought City of Bones but I keep putting off reading it so that I can finish books on loan from the library first. But that's a series I'm definitely looking forward to getting into!
I know what you mean about books being your savior. I've always been an avid reader but college and then work made it difficult to read as much as I liked. However, I've been unemployed for a couple of weeks now and with absolutely nothing else to do, I've managed to power through quite a few books. :) I also enjoyed the Kissed by an Angel trilogy.
I am about 1/3 through Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy. It's alright so far, but a little lacking in excitement, in my opinion. Maybe I'm growing burnt out on vamps. Seems everyone's just re-telling the same story. I didn't care much for the Twilight series, but at least it was different. I commend Meyer on her idea...I just wish she'd done a better job of bringing it to fruition. I think the vamp subgenre needs more authors who are willing to expand the boundaries.
I will be finishing Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist at lunch today. I liked it a lot.
I will start Saving Zoe by Alyson Noel
Hi everyone! Just joined the website and this thread and I have to say it is very cool discussing all of these fascinating books with like-minded people! I've read or am reading almost all of the books mentioned here (The Mortal Instruments-LOVED them!, Libba Bray, The Immortals, The House of Night, Hunger Games-can't wait for sequel!, etc...) Right now, I am listening to #2 of the Gemma Doyle series...Rebel Angels, reading book 3, Chosen, in the House of Night series, and just finished #2 of the Wicked Lovely series, the Ink Exchange. I absolutely love all of them and can't get enough! Fortunately there are sequels and more sequels. Next I am going to start Tithe by Holly Black.
Welcome, welcome! It's so exciting to see someone else actually posting. Check out the "reviews" subforum for more recommendations and mini-reviews if you ever want more YA!
Oh, I like Tithe. It's really good. Tell us what you think about it when you've read it. C:
Finished Tithe a couple of days ago and liked it pretty well. It was interesting to see the same terms I've encountered in the Wicked Lovely books being used. :-) I've learned so much about Faery that I'm almost certian they must exist! LOL
I'm still finishing up my Gemma Doyle trilogy, but want to move on to the next couple of books in the Tithe series soon. Also need to finish up the House of Night series (books 4-6 I think?), the last book of the wicked lovelies, and those not yet released...Cathching Fire, and the Immortals last book. I hear that Cassandra Clare should be releasing a prequel triology soon for the Mortal Instruments series. Have to get that!! Well, that's all for now! ;-)
Yeah, Tithe's good. I'm kind of looking for other books set in Faerie, is Wicked Lovely good?
I have to admit though, that Valiant, the next book in the series, isn't as good as the first.
I'm currently reading Battle Royale by Houshun Takami. It's like The Hunger Games, but it's much older.
Really? That's disappointing! How is the 3rd one, Ironside?
Wicked Lovely is really good! I definitely liked it better than Tithe and I liked Tithe!
It shows the evil side of Faery, like Tithe does, but in much more depth. And the romance within the plot is waaay better too! :-)
To tell you the truth, I haven't read Ironside in years. I just reread the first two recently, but I haven't gotten that one yet. Because it goes back to the original characters from the first book, I think I remember I liked it?
But I'll definately try to find Wicked Lovely at the library. Thanks!
~ What are you reading right now and what do you think of it so far? Right now I am reading The Sea of Monsters (2nd book in The Percy Jackson & The Olympians series) and I like it quite a bit. They are dang near impossible to get at the library! GR!
~ What are you about to start reading and why? I'm about to start reading Generation Dead because I haven't ever read a zombie book before and I thought the plot was very interesting. It's about people cohabitating with people (teens) that couldn't die. Crazy interesting isn't it?
~ What did you just finish reading and would you recommend it? Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac literally an hour ago. I would recommend it, but I would recommend about ten other books first. If that makes sense.
I read Generation Dead. I remember liking it, though it doesn't stick true to the definition of zombies I really like.
Ok well, I just finished Hunted and left a pretty detailed review on it, so I won't start up again here. But, it was ok if you can stand being updated on every last detail of the previous 5 books, verbatim, for the 6th time! As well as her never ending boy issues! 'Nuff said!
I am currently reading Valiant A Modern Tale of Faerie and I guess it's ok, but I'm disappointed that it's not the same characters as book 1. I guess she picks back up with them in book 3.
I'm about to start the 3rd installment of Wicked Lovely Fragile Eternity and this is a book I CAN'T wait to read. I'm saving it until I get Valiant out of the way. :-)
Lastly, I have The Sorceress to read.
I'm reading Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson...I hope it equals my expectations! Anderson raised the bar pretty high with Speak.
Hi all,I'm new to this group and an avid YA reader (and 35 years old!). I love it so much it's the genre I also write in. Right now, I'm reading Every Soul A Star by Wendy Mass and I'm loving it so far. She has such a lovely style and voice. My favorite authors are Deb Caletti, Eireann Corrigan, and John Green. Glad to have found this cool group on goodreads!
Smiles,
Kim Culbertson
Songs for a Teenage Nomad (Hip Pocket Press)
First of all thanks to Angee for the invite, very nice group btw =D~ What are you reading right now and what do you think of it so far?
Currently reading Mistik Lake by Martha Brooks, I would definitely recommend this author to anyone that loves Sarah Dessen but has already read all of her novels (currently my case) I'm very much loving this Martha Brooks author, she writes realistic teen fiction in a very very similar style to Mrs. Dessen.
~ What are you about to start reading and why?
I cannot wait for my library to get Impulse by Ellen Hopkins. I've only read Crank and Glass so i want to read another one of her beautifully written novels in verse.
~ What did you just finish reading and would you recommend it? I just finished Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. Sadly i would NOT recommend this to anyone that likes to read GOOD books. Very very boring, simply blah from beginning to end. Heard they're making it a movie, hopefully it turns out better than the book.
Kind of nothing, at the moment. I've actually been sitting around trying to decide what to read. I feel like YA, but I don't have any more at the moment.
I think I will start reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.

Have you ever read Jodi Picoult? She wrote My Sister's Keeper which is currently in theaters as a movie. She is a very good read! Not at all fantasy or supernatural (except for one book) she mostly only writes very realistic YA that is good enough for an adult. I highly recommend her! In particular, check out The Pact, Salem Falls, and 19 minutes.
I've had a hard time with Jodi picoult actually. Maybe I should give her another shot. I just have a hard time with serious and depressing books. I can't get enough of the teen romance books. Pathetic and shallow, isn't it?
I loved Strange & Norrell, but a lot of people have a hard time getting into it. Hope you like it.
I just put down The Historian without finishing it. Not YA, though, but very dull. I'll probably go back it, tho, just to finish it since I'm 600 pages in and have a little over 200 left.
Currently reading Evermore which I got through first-reads. It's ok, but a bit hack-neyed.
I couldn't finish Evermore. It was absolutely dull and too much of an imitation of other series for me. Maybe I'll finish it later.
The Historian's a Dracula book, no?
Shoshanah-- I want to read Jodi Picoult, I heard she was good. What are her books about exactly? Just life issues?

Pretty much. Her books almost always revolve arounf teens (thus the YA classification) and something of a legal nature. The 3 books I recommended should be read in that order, although they're not a series, because there is a lawyer in all 3 that represents the main characters in a trial. His story is continued in each of those books, so I like to recommend them in the order in which he appears. Jodi always keeps you guessing as to what is really going on, who is "guilty" and somehow she makes you able to see all points of view in the story and sympathize with the characters. She always throws a curve ball at you too, just when you think you know what's up! Once you read one of her books you'll want to read them all, she is a unique writer!
Yes, 'The Historian' is a Dracula book, but at 600 pages in, we haven't actually met Dracula yet, it's all been the search for him told through overly detailed letters and searching through library archives. Exciting stuff, lemme tell you...
