1958329 I'm almost done with my Feb. reading. I finally finished NightWorld 2 and The Magician's Nephew by CS Lewis, and am halfway through The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe. It'll take me the next two days to read the other half *sighs* It just seems like there's not alot of time to read these days.

1805316 I had to set The Bone Doll's Twin aside because it was starting to drag. So, I'm sticking to just reading a chapter a night, and I'm finding I enjoy it more that way.

Now, I'm focusing most of my attention on A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. So far I'm loving it. This book is huge, both in scope and the amount of characters.

811687 I just started Lud-In-The-Mist by Hope Mirrlees. It's a fantasy novel that pre-dates "The Lord of the Rings" by more than 30 years. I've only read one chapter and I can already tell that Neil Gaiman was heavily influenced by this book when he wrote "Stardust". I'm not just saying that because he wrote an introduction. The tone, setting and the one character introduced so far is very, very similar.

Morgawr by Terry Brooks
Stephen King Goes to the Movies by Stephen King
Just After Sunset by Stephen King
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Griffin's Daughter by Leslie Ann Moore
The Crown Conspiracy by Michael Sullivan

Didn't get to the others on my 'soon' list, but I did get a good jump into House of Chains by Steven Erikson.

178353 Well, February is almost over - how's everyone doing on their monthly goals?

I read Queen of the Darkness by Anne Bishop and Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey and I loved them both. I also just finished Mistborn, which I thought was fantastic and am sad I missed the discussion on here (though if anyone else is lagging, I've started adding my comments to those threads anyway).

I didn't get to read either the second in Goodkind's Sword of Truth series or the third of the Wheel of Time series.

Non-fantasy-wise, I read

Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
Gilead: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson
and Katherine by Anya Seton for the European Royalty group here on Goodreads.

756928 I just finished Cast In Courtlight, and am now (finally) starting Son of a Witch A Novel. I read something else earlier this month, but now I'm blanking on what it was.

Does anyone know if there is a palm application or something for good reads? That would be very helpful. I seem to have most of my "spare" time to do little administrative type work on my bus rides - and I could quickly do book updates then if there is.

I read The Name of the Wind a while ago (thankfully) or I'm not sure if I'd be done by now).

Oh! I know! I finished Mistborn The Final Empire earlier this month, and I read The Child Goddess

I know: video games (and TV) compete with reading a lot for me too. Besides the super hero games and Final Fantasy XII, I have Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Champions of Norrath, and Second Sight. It's great to meet some video game fans here- Stephen, Tracy, and Emily. Ok. Back to reading. Got to finish "Revelation Space" before I resume "The Name of the Wind"....

It's going to blow my goal of reading 75 books this year, but I'm planning on reading the Outlander series straight on throught now.

1042102 Kathy, Emily and Kelsey, I love the Outlander series!

message 67: by Cameron (new)

Nophoto-m-25x33 Reading a lot of Forgotten Realms stuff at the moment. Just finished the first couple books in the Moonshae Trilogy, Darkwalker on Moonshae and Black Wizards, and I plan to finish the third book, Darkwell soon. For right now however I have started a new series (still in the FR), Shandril's Saga. Anybody else enjoy reading the Forgotten Realms?

I usually take way to long to read books because I play videogames as well. As of lately it has been World of Warcraft which is very fantasy related with it's own story line and lore. The world is massive and the game play is quite addicting.

message 65: by Jackie (new)

1660443 Right now:Demon Moon by Jack Williamson
It's reminding me of Nightfall by Isaac Asimov, which is one of my favorite books. Totally enjoying this book.

Recently finished the Genesis of Shannara series, probably one of the best post-apocalyptic novels I've read in a long time.

message 64: by Terri (new)

45128 reading Halfway to the GRave by jeanine Frost and Storm of Swords by George RR Martin

message 63: by Emily (new)

178353 I LOVE Okami. Such a great game.

message 62: by Tracy (new)

1921489 Maurice - I do a lot of RPG games. Right now I'm replaying Oblivion and have Fallout 3 for my PC. I'm still playing Okami on the Wii and I have Final Fantasy and the Lego games (haven't played Batman yet) on the PS2. I usually just rent the superhero games. Not very many book tie ins exist, and the few I know of just weren't that good.

Videogames? Do you play fantasy videogames and/or superhero videogames? I went crazy with the superhero ones: Spiderman, Justice League, the Ultimates, etc. But I also got two fantasy games, one of which is a version of Final Fantasy. Do you have any games that tie into fantasy novels you have read?

message 60: by Tracy (new)

1921489 I don't plan ahead too far when it comes to reading, I'm currently averaging a book a day. I'll likely get through 10 more books this month. I have three more books by Jane Lindskold at the moment - The Dragon of Despair, Wolf Captured, and Wolf Hunting. After that, it all depends on my mood. I have quite a few Kindle books to read, some nonfiction I could read, some other fantasy on the to-be-read list. Or I could decide to feed my other habit - I am a videogame junkie, too.

message 59: by Melissa (last edited Mar 12, 2009 01:20PM) (new)

1825034 I am in the middle of "The White Gryphon" by Mercedes Lackey, and "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. Both are amazing so far, I just hope to finish them this moth yet!

message 58: by Robin (last edited Feb 18, 2009 10:01AM) (new)

1572236 Thanks for the recommendation on "Flora Segunda" - I added it to my TBR list. I've never heard of it before - so I'm excited!

message 57: by Megan (new)

128367 Reread Inkheart and Inkspell because I felt like I needed a refresher before Inkdeath which I just finished. Really enjoyed the series overall but was disappointed in the last chapter of Inkdeath. After that I read Swan Maiden by Jules Watson which I got a pre-release copy of at NY ComicCon. Actually didn't have high hopes, but ended up really liking it. Has sparked an interest in reading more books based on myths, particularly Celtic myths. I just started the YA fantasy book Flora Segunda. The writing reminds me a bit of Neil Gaiman in that it is totally original...nothing seems like it was "borrowed" from other fantasy. Hopefully my copy of Alphabet of Thorn will arrive soon because I'm supposed to read it this month for the Sci Fi and Fantasy Book Group!

Thanks, Emily. I joined the group this morning. I plan on going back to it later and adding some comments. It looks like a great group.

message 55: by Robin (new)

1572236 I just started Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

message 54: by Kelsey (new)

841652 I've been meaning to read Outlander forever! I keep hearing mixed reviews about it. It seems like people either absolutely love it or hate it. I actually met Diana Gabaldon a couple weeks ago at my store (B&N). She's probably the most famous author ever to wander into our store as of yet, so we were all pretty excited!
Right now, I'm reading Mistborn and Clash of Kings.

message 53: by Emily (new)

178353 Kathy, we're still discussing it over in the European Royalty group (we expanded and now to a European Royalty read and then a regular historical fiction read each month). Come on over and join!

message 52: by Kathy (new)

971945 Emily, Are you discussing Outlander now? I'm almost finished with it and would love to join in.

message 51: by Kathy (new)

971945 Currently reading and loving Outlander

message 50: by Emily (new)

178353 Just finished Gilead and thought it was devastatingly beautiful. Great book.

message 49: by Lindsey (new)

1753664 Emily, i read Gilead and liked it. hope you do too.

near the top of my to-read pile are Wolf Moon and The Harp of the Grey Rose, both by Charles De Lint

message 48: by Dame (new)

1519878 Daughter of the forest

message 47: by Robin (new)

1572236 I'll also cast a vote for Good Omens - I still laugh (but to myself) about parts of that book. I also liked Princess Bride and it is a lot like the movie but his "asides" are very interesting.

message 46: by Elizabeth (new)

629344 Yay, Sandi! I didn't like Game of Thrones either. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one - I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me. :-)

message 45: by Elise (new)

1805316 I finished The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I thought it was pretty cute, but the real highlight was Dumbledore's commentary of course.

Now I'm reading The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling.

message 44: by Sandi (new)

811687 "Good Omens" and "Neverwhere" are two of the best books I read last year. They're both quick reads. I love the movie "Princess Bride" and am really looking forward to the book. I wasn't incredibly impressed with "Game of Thrones". It's got way too many story lines and characters. It never wraps up any of the many story lines. It's a huge, long book that just sets up a sequel. I decided not to read the rest of the series because it's just way too many volumes and the author isn't even finished yet.

message 43: by Jane (new)

1743251 So I finished up Griffen's Daughter - going to go over and post on that in a minute. I've already read Name of the Wind and Crown Conspiracy so I'm set for those. Wonder what I should read next....

1 - GoodOmens
2 - Princess Bride
3 - Neverwhere
4 - Game of Thrones

Anyone have suggestions?

message 42: by Robin (new)

1572236 Sounds very interesting Jeanne -be sure to report back when you are done with it.

message 41: by Jeanne, Monthly book reading Mod (new)

1042102 I'm currently reading Thunderhead having finished The Crown Conspiracy in only 3 days :-( (well, it took 4 calendar days, but I didn't have time to read on one of those days) Thunderhead is not exactly a fantasy, it is classified as a suspense? But is one of those books that is difficult to classify. There are paranormal-types of characters, archaeology, space science, history and who knows what else I'll encounter? I've run across all that in just 53 pages! A friend gave me the book because she knew of my interest in southwestern US native american tribes, particularly the Anasazi. It's really fascinating so far!

1572236 Elise wrote: "Now, I'm onto The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling.

I must confess that I was a bit disappointed in This one. It was a quick fun read - but I thought it could have been so much more. I think it is great that all the profits are going to chairty.

message 39: by Elise (new)

1805316 I just finished The Hero of Ages yesterday. Totally didn't see that ending coming. I'm already missing these characters. :( It was a fantastic trilogy.

I also read Watchmen by Alan Moore, which was amazing!

Now, I'm onto The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling.

message 38: by Elizabeth (last edited Feb 13, 2009 08:26AM) (new)

629344 For fantasy books: I finished The Faerie Path, which I thought was just dreadful. I'm now reading Yvain, Or, the Knight With the Lion, which is much better.

Also on my list for the month are:
The Briar King
His Majesty's Dragon(still on my list from last month)

And maybe a head start on The Princess Bride or re-reading a Mercedes Lackey book, since we've been talking about her on another thread.

message 37: by Emily (new)

178353 Update: I finished both Queen of the Darkness and Kushiel's Dart and adored them both. I've heard the two series compared and I can see where that comes from, though I think Kushiel's Dart is superior. I can't wait to get further into that world!

Also finished Song of Solomon which I could appreciate for its beauty, but didn't love myself. Working on Gilead A Novel now, which is short and will likely be followed by another fantasy novel... I need my fix! :)

message 36: by Maurice (new)

121297 Leslie, it also takes me awhile to get through a book. I tried rotation reading (reading a little from a different book every day) but I just gave that up to concentrate on one book at a time. With my teaching day job and writing aspirations I have just come to the conclusion that I will have to force reading and electronic entertainment into the post midnight hours. So, unless I learn how to speed read, I will have to abandon my one book a week goal. Sigh!

message 35: by Kelsey (new)

841652 Has anybody ever read anything by Jennifer Roberson? A friend gave me Karavans #1 to read, so I'm wondering if it's worth a shot...

message 34: by Thalia (new)

1908465 I'm halfway through James Herbert's "Once...". Then on my to-read list there are
- Breaking Dawn ~ Stephenie Meyer
- The Word and the Void trilogy - Terry Brooks

message 33: by Jim (new)

695116 I'm slowly reading Donnerjack & still trying to finish 4 other books I started. I really need to find more time to read. More hours per day needed!

message 32: by Maurice (new)

121297 I am currently reading The Pearls (Fantasy) by Deborah Chester. I am almost done. I am hoping to then finish Revelation Space (Science Fiction) by Alastair Reynolds.

message 31: by Kelsey (new)

841652 I'm reading a bunch of stuff right now. I keep picking things up, then putting them down and picking something else up. I just started A Game of Thrones and I love it, so I bought the rest of the series (the ones that are out, anyway).

message 30: by Kettricken (new)

1683228 I've finished Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card. It left me impressed, and gave more depth to the fabulous Ender's Game.

At the moment I'm reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons; very good but it takes some concentration to follow everything that's going on (not that that's a bad thing...).
Also, I'm reading Blindness by Jose Saramago. The Dutch version, to be precise, translated as 'Stad der Blinden'.

message 29: by Marc (new)

1348693 I just read a great little mystery novel I got out of the library for my wife, called Without Mercy A "Where Are They Now?" Mystery. The premise involves a made-up TV show from the 70s called Kissing Cousins, which is supposed to be a combination of The Addams Family and the Brady Bunch. Three 'normal' kids and three wierdos in one house, children of two sisters. It's a show I'd watch if it were on now.

message 28: by Oscar (new)

1849216 I read the gormenghast trilogy long ago, however am going to re-read it in between some wheel of time books, since i will shortly be attending a lecture by sebastian peake.
