Hey Brooke!

The concept for this book started as a dream. There was this pretty blond teen running down a cobblestone street in the rain...at night...in white silky p.j.'s... in France (don't ask me why, lol) I don't know how I knew she was homeless, but I did. (You how you just know something in your dreams is true but have no idea how you know it?)She was following a guy with a suitcase. The guy with the suitcase stooped over to open the case, and I woke up. I just had to know what was in that case, and I really wanted whatever it was to help the homless girl. So ... naturally, I just wrote her story :)

Hi Marni,

The church I attend works with other organizations to help both the homeless and girls and women who've been hurt by human trafficking in Atlanta. A great deal of Birdie's story is taken from what I've learned through this work both from workers in the support groups and the girls themselves.

This is one group that does great work.

Sometimes the best ideas come from dreams ... or nightmares (once you are done being scared to death of what your own creepy mind can come up with once your alseep! Lol)

I hope everyone who is reading is having fun :)

Wow, how awesome is this? And did you know that you wanted to make it a book right away? or was it just kind of something in your head that you decided to put on paper?

LOL yes I would imagine trying to decipher a nightmare is not a welcome thought but if you get something juicy out of it, well then all the more better :)

I love this book and I hope everyone is going to love it just as much as me :)

I have always wanted to keep a journal by the bed so I can write down my dreams if I remember them. I am sure there's a story in them somewhere...hmmm....lightbulb!

Julie Reece | 708 comments That's a fantastic idea and I know a lot of writers do that.

I've eaten pizza and a pint of chocolate ice cream right before bed and that produced the most wicked dream I've ever had ... The result was a short story about a serial killer with necrophilia habits. (Ew) *shiver* This is why I don't write horror anymore, I scare myself!

Another dream I had involved being chased down by a gorgeous vamp followed by a hot make out scene and lots of biting *sigh* ... but I digress ...

Exactly! Ever have one of those very real dreams? Whether it inspired you to write a novel or not, some dreams are so frightening, or sweet or sexy, they just stay with you for days.

Tina (frogluv3r) | 397 comments I have recently had a dream that scared me so bad I had to wake my husband. I was crying and afraid to go back to sleep. It seemed so real at the time. It might have been the vanilla ice cream with Heath chocolate oozing all over it.LOL

I'm not big on horror. Suspense and a little mystery, I'm all about. But horror, well, it gives me nightmares and those are just not fun!

Ok, so you and Julie have taught me, NO ICE CREAM BEFORE BED! LOL!

LOL I dream every night. A lot of times when I dream it's like I am awake. I know I am dreaming, but can't open my eyes. Sometimes those are the worst. Ice cream, nachos, carrots...no matter what I eat causes nightmares. Ice cream is just more delicious. Now I want ice cream...darn it. LOL

o

I'm with Brooke on the horror thing. I'm a big chicken, but I'd like to have Tina's ability to dream everynight. I think that's so cool (well, aside from the crying part, lol) The best book ideas cme from wild dreams!

Speaking of details, can you tell us a little about the setting of Crux. Why did you choose it? Does it have any significance?

message 35: by Julie (last edited Sep 05, 2012 12:33pm) (new) - added it

Julie Reece | 708 comments Well, technically there are two settings. The first is Atlanta because that is where my family volunteers with the homeless and girls in prostitution and human trafficking. I picked Atlanta because it's my home and experience. It’s where I’ve seen these people and can picture their faces and their lives.

The second stage is England in Winter. Yorkshire, actually. Gunnarr Blot is loosely based on the Battle of Stamford Bridge, so it seemed fitting to place my battlefield there.

I remember my good dreams too! :) I have a lot of dreams that are continuations from the books I read or movies I watch. My most frequent dreams are related to the Harry Potter Series, because I sleep to one of the HP movies almost every night. LOL

Elise (RedEntrapy) | 226 comments I have full on night terrors, and the bad thing is those are the only ones I ever remember. They're the ones that have my parents trying to shake me awake and can't and I wake up with no voice from screaming so badly. Though lately those have been going away and now I just have weird dreams that make no sense or dreams of a character that I have written or created myself.

Julie Reece | 708 comments Elise wrote: "I have full on night terrors, and the bad thing is those are the only ones I ever remember. They're the ones that have my parents trying to shake me awake and can't and I wake up with no voice from..."

Wow, that is intense! I've never had a night terror. Yikes! My dreams and imagination can get pretty real, though. Usually I can see a scene in my head (really real, just like I'm watching a movie) and I just write what I see. A night terror sounds straight up scary. I'm glad they are going away for you, Elise.

Julie Reece | 708 comments Here are some cool Viking facts:

Did you know ... both Lord of the Rings, Lion Witch and the Wardrobe, and Harry Potter authors drew from Nordic myths and legends for parts of their story?

Did you know the fables Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are rooted in Nordic mythology as well. When a child was born, there was a tradition in Nordic villages to name the child in a ceremony with blessings and pricking on your finger on the staff of a spinning wheel. No joke.

A beautiful Viking goddess slept with a bunch of dwarves (I don't think it was seven, though, lol) in exchange for their making her a magic amulet.

And Grim's fairy tale 'Mother Holle' comes from the Vikings, too.

:) I love me some Vikings.

What great information, Julie! I love this type of stuff.

Julie Reece | 708 comments Me too! I know a lot of authors hate research and I wasn't very 'schooly' back when I was in school, but I find this sort of history and mythology stuff facinating! :)

The Cover Contessa (TheCoverContessa) | 1314 comments Julie wrote: "Me too! I know a lot of authors hate research and I wasn't very 'schooly' back when I was in school, but I find this sort of history and mythology stuff facinating! :)"

Yes, I love they type of history. I am NOT a history buff by any means. I also love Greek Mythology. It's neat to think about all those Gods and such. I'm a huge fan of movies based on this type of stuff!

The Cover Contessa (TheCoverContessa) | 1314 comments Oh, I got one, if your book was going to become a movie, who would you choose to play Birdie? Grey? Jeff?

message 45: by Julie (last edited Sep 06, 2012 01:53pm) (new) - added it

Julie Reece | 708 comments Oh my gosh, so hard! Birdie maybe = Shelby Keeton?
http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=S...

Jeff? Easy. He's hands down Jeff Bridges =
http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=j...

Grey is uber hard ...could Douglas Booth pull it off? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3150488/ Too pretty, too young?

Dean Geyer http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2357874/

Meh, I don't know. Still hunting a good Grey.

Alex Pettyfer can play Haddr in a minute! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1641117/

Okay people, tell me who you'd pick!

OMGosh, too funny, I totally saw Jeff Bridges while reading this character!!! Holy Moly!!! I can't believe it!

Oh yes, Alex is a good choice for Haddr!!!

I'm gonna think on who I would see for Birdie and Grey....

Sylvia (Heinzypop) | 12602 comments You had me at DOUGLAS BOOTH rrrrrrraaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Love those Nordic facts and I love researching too I'm such a nerd lie that woot

Julie Reece | 708 comments For those of you asking about Fenris ... According to Nordic/Viking legend and mythology ... Fenrir (or Fenris) is a gigantic and terrible monster in the shape of a wolf. He was so immensely strong that he managed to break the strongest fetters as if they were cobwebs.

That's my boy :)

The Cover Contessa (TheCoverContessa) | 1314 comments I think I would totally want to see Chris Hemsworth in a roll in the movie...not sure which...hmmm...I don't think Fenris would work since he's dark, right?

Julie Reece | 708 comments Right! :) Tall, dark, dangerous, and handsome.
