I'm not sure if you've ever read a literary journal. Most sit with dusty spines on the bottom shelves of the newstand next to art and "Writers" magazines. But don't overlook these little gems packed with excellent book reviews, poetry, essays and short stories.
My favorites are: The Paris Review, The Harvard Review, The Prairie Schooner, Ploughshares, Boulevard, and Glimmer Train. These journals are published independently and also by colleges with writing programs. You'll recognize the most famous and best-selling contemporary writers today in their pages, as well as people you've never heard of. Many of these writers receive awards for the work that is printed in their pages, such as the O'Henry Award, the Pushcart Prize (best of the small presses), and numerous PEN/Faulkner awards.
There is nothing like watching a writer develop and publish over a career, and these small journals give you a glimpse into their most intimate work and thoughts. To me, there is nothing like holding one of these small journals in your hands and turning their pages (though yes, sometimes you have to blow the dust off first).
Ploughshares: Read stories and poetry online!

The Harvard Review: Only select stories, essays, poetry, interviews and more online!

The Paris Review: Lots of online satisfaction.
