One cold winter morning in December Franco, a little feline, says to his new friend, Raquel, a tabby mother cat, "What is all this singing? And tell me please, what means white Christmas? Does the holiday have a color?" “Do cows and bulls celebrate holidays with special colors? Does a dog or horse have a Christmas with a color? Red Cinco de Mayo(May 5th)? or Yellow New Year’s?”
“When you can stop laughing, would you please try to explain this to me, Dear Friend?” The friend of the young cat laughs a long time! Next Raquel runs and plays with her new baby kittens before she can explain all of this to Franco, her dear new friend. Afterwards she finishes washing her kittens, and at 12:00 her kittens go to sleep.
Now Raquel knows she can translate into Spanish the expression, "White Christmas" but its translation could be confusing to Franco. "Hmmmm," Raquel thinks and thinks how best to explain “Navidad con nieve.” She wants Franco to know how to say this in Spanish, but will he grasp why this expression does not translate directly? Is Franco old enough to understand its meaning?
When Raquel sees that Franco is becoming weary from the waiting, she distracts him by pretending herself to take a short nap. Franco does so miss playing with her little darlings. He complains that they are always sleeping or eating.
Just a few minutes later Franco returns. He stands right over Raquel, and he thinks about snuggling right up next to her brood--for his own siesta! Before Franco can finish his own short bath--a ritual he prefers to perform before his daily nap, Raquel peeks open one eye and rolls to one side taking a long, relaxed stretch. Afraid to speak, Franco blinks his eyes at Raquel, to hide his apparent anticipation. As Raquel yawns and yawns, she finally speaks. “White Christmas means Christmas of snow or Christmas with snow when you say it in Spanish! Everything does not always translate quite the same. It is a subtle difference, yes?”
That same cold winter evening in December the same inquisitive little feline says to Raquel, his new friend, the tabby mother cat, "Why do the dogs howl at the moon in the night? Do they think they will become wolves by all this howling they do?" Franco asks. The mother cat ponders her young friend's question then responds, "A dog is always a dog, but a cat is woman's best friend! Now will you remember that Franco? I must go hunting now. Will you keep an eye on my sleeping babies for me?"
