Bio-Curtain
He was well protected by the thick reeds; the lion could not possibly see him. He was downwind; the lion could not possibly smell him. But Talon was looking directly at the place where K’tanu crouched, and he knew the lion could definitely feel him.
Suddenly, Talon got to his feet and coiled himself. K’tanu hurled himself backward, trying to find his feet. In one great leap, Talon was where K’tanu had been a second before, and in another, he’d have the young hunter by the throat. K’tanu raced to his left, knowing it would take the cat a moment to hear where he’d gone. But that moment had already passed between one leaping footfall and another, and Talon knew his quarry’s course. He came charging through the brush, letting out a blood-curdling roar.
K’tanu lost his footing at the edge of the springs and went down, slamming his knee against a sharp rock. Pain radiated up his leg, but he dared not slow. The thunderous footfalls behind him betrayed no hesitation. He could almost feel the animal’s hot breath on his neck.
K’tanu broke through the head-high grass and was momentarily disoriented. Instead of the wooded savanna of the caldera floor stretching out before him, he was high above on the collapsed volcano’s rim, only a few paces from the precipitous edge. Without thinking, he sprinted toward it. Before he had taken three steps, Talon burst from the tall grass behind him, yellow eyes squinted with effort, ropes of saliva trailing from massive jaws. In two more steps the lion would have him, and K’tanu would die.
But not in your jaws, he thought, throwing himself off the cliff.
Behind him, Talon ground to a stop, paws on the edge of the abyss, chest heaving, golden eyes focused on the dark abyss below, ears pricked with the sound of K’tanu’s trailing cry.
