The rain thudded heavily on the black coffee umbrella, which I borrowed earlier from the coffee shop, as I quickly walked down the side walk to my friend’s apartment. I looked grudgingly down at my feet wondering why I ever made the stupid choice to buy the green and yellow flip flops I was wearing. I shivered involuntarily as the chilling wind glided over my exposed arms causing the hairs to stand up and goose bumps to form. I looked back at the warm inviting coffee shop I had left only a few minutes ago. I thought back to the fight me and my step mom had before I had left the apartment.
She had called to tell me her and my father had sold my car which I had invested all my money in.
“What do you mean you had to sell it?” I gritted my teeth as my voice raised.
“We had no choice your dad needed money to repair the roof” she stated carelessly.
I glared at the wall as my grip on the phone tightened.
“I’m sorry Avery, honey it needed to be done” She said unemotionally not caring if I accepted her fake apology or not.
I closed my eyes sighing thinking about what I was going to do. “it’s fine…” I paused trying to think of what to say. “Thanks for your concern, but I’ve got to go, bye” I said in the nicest voice I could manage and slammed the phone down. I walked quickly to the mirror and stared at my reflection. My long brown hair was pulled back in a loose and messy pony tail. My green shirt clung tightly to my short frame and my face had a simple nothing can touch me hardness to it. But my green eyes looked upset and angry always giving away my emotions. After gazing at myself for a couple more minutes I decided I looked decent enough and put on my flip flops as I headed out the door.
As I entered the coffee shop's glass doors the warm and calming aroma of fresh coffee and baking dough enveloped me. I took a seat at my usual spot right next to a big poster hanging in the shops window. Only this time it was advertising a Sunday special. I looked around curious to when my table would be waited on. No one was coming so I decided to look at the flip menus that were placed at every table. Get a coffee cake half off if you buy... I stopped reading. There was that feeling of someone watching me pricking at my nerves. I looked up not knowing what to expect. Nothing was there, so I took a look around. The place was practically empty except for a family. A mother was hushing her son who was screaming as his sister threw something at him. I turned back around and jumping as I looked at a man sitting across from me. His dark handsome features stood out against the pale background of the coffee shop.
“Sorry if I startled you” he smiled halfheartedly.
“Um...'' I paused staring dumbfounded at him. “Do I know you?” the question danced in the air for only a couple seconds.
“No but you will.”
“Excuse me may I take your order.” I looked up to find a waitress standing over me. She looked like she was roughly 17 her blonde hair was tied back and her uniform had stains on it galore.
“Yeah” I paused “What do you...” I looked back across the table to find the stranger had gone and I was sitting alone. I stared blankly then looked cautiously around the room searching for the man who had been sitting with me moments ago.
The waitress cleared her throat impatiently and I looked back up at her quizzingly. “What would you like?” She glared at her pad of paper then looked down at me. “Um a Macchiato.” I took one last glance around the room then shook my head sure I was just seeing things. “That's all.”
The sound of a car alarm shocked me back into the present. I looked around curiously wondering how long I had been standing in the rain. I was shivering uncontrollably and decided it was time to go back to my friends apartment. When I got there the warmth engulfed me and welcomed me home. I took a deep breath and walked inside.
“I’m home!” I shouted out into the apartment. There was some clinking in the kitchen so I casually walked there. Amy was running frantically around trying to find something.
“Hey Avery, have you seen my big cake pan?” she looked at me hoping I would know.
“Um…” I thought to myself for a moment. “it’s in the top cabinet next to the stove top shelf I think.” She opened the door and looked inside. Felling around, she came back with her cake pan.
“Thank you!” she walked up to me and hugged me tight. “I don’t know what I would do without you.” Her smile radiated around the room.
“You’re welcome, and I don’t know what you would do either. If I wasn’t here you would probably lose your mind.” I laughed teasinglyas I quickly walked over to my room.
My room was a mess. Clothes were thrown around and papers were spread across my desk. My bed was in disarray even though I haven’t slept in it for the past two days. Unwillingly I decided that I needed to clean up. After about thirty minutes I gave up and looked around. My dresser was still a little out of order but it was overall cleaner then before I started. Looking at my still unmade bed I frowned. Throwing the pillows off I laid the blanket flat and evenly over my bed. After putting the pillows back on my bed I left my room.
“Hey Amy.” I smiled brightly at her getting a bigger smile in return.
“Hey Av how was your day?” she used my nick name that she’d given me years ago.
“It was good other then when my step mom called.” I paused “Did anyone call me?” Amy frowned at me when I mentioned my step mom but a lighthearted smile came to her face. Amy knew what my step mother was like and I’m glad I had her as a support.
“Oh what did she want?”
“Nothing more than to make my life harder then it already is” I rolled my eyes. “I still can’t believe my dad was stupid enough to marry her.” I sighed and grabbed a yogurt out of the fridge.
“How about you Amy?” I smiled trying to redirect my thought process. Sitting down on a big fluffy couch engulfed by pillows I let out a huff.
“Same old same old, I’ve got a big wedding order due in a week and I have no idea how I’m going to finish it.” She thought absentmindedly to herself as she sat next to me. I just laughed and shook my head.
“I still have no idea why you decided to open your own cake making business.”
“I don’t know why sometimes either. Oh and your lover boy called” she smirked at me and I blushed.
“He’s not my lover boy” I mumbled.
“Mhm, sure what ever he calls here 500 times a day just to see if you are ok, for me, that says lover boy.” I glared at her then smiled a little.
“How old are you anyways since when do 21 year olds say lover boy?” She threw a pillow at me then and giggled.
“I am a special 21 year old, that likes being in touch with my younger years.” Amy pulled her red hair back in a tight pony tail and crossed her legs. Her blue shirt had bits of flower and frosting sticking to the front and her tired blue eyes showed nothing but love and happiness. She looked at me and frowned.
“What’s wrong?” She looked at my curiously.
“Nothing Amy just nothing” And with that I walked into my bed room climbed into bed and quickly fell asleep.
