The night swallowed and digested us.
We slid down its digestive tract,
splashing down the water slide of the esophagus
into a whirlpool of stomach acid.
The burn is like heaven, like hell,
like hope.
The small intestine, the large intestine.
What good fun it is to float along
on a lazy river of muck and goo.
You held my hand as we slid down
until finally we reached the end.
It was as if we were born once more.
There was light at the end of the tunnel,
and I held you close as we pushed through.

as we went singing
into the light of morning.
