So how did she end up in jail?
The answer lies two years back, and is uncovered in letters, emails, IMs, text messages, court transcripts, and notes. This paper trail tells the story of Marlborough, a misanthropic 12-year-old girl named Ryan, a horrifying illness, and a friendship full of spitting hate and sisterly love.

Ryan,
I still don’t regret it.
I’m shocked that I did it. I’m scared and upset and worried that I did it. But through all of the people who look at me like I’m some kind of devil, from your mother to my own, from Brooklyn to Chandler to Janet to Kayla to all of the people who happened to be in my life and yours at the time, and not to mention the judge and the jury - obviously, the jury - I have remained resolute in one thing. I will not ever regret what I did.
Maybe I should. I mean, I’m 19 years old, sitting in a penitentiary library, writing with a dull pencil on the backside of a scrap piece of paper. Obviously, I made at least a few wrong turns to end me up here. But that doesn’t mean that I have to regret any of them.
Really, it’s kind of funny. Five years ago, nobody, and I mean nobody, would think I could ever end up here. I’m the girl who got straight A’s since elementary school, who was in NJHS and NHS and student council, who never showed up late for class. I dare you to find any record of me turning in a single project late, a single overdue homework assignment. I’d never been to detention. I’d never broken a school rule. I was your stereotypical perfect student, prim and proper and direction-following.
Like I said before, it’s kind of funny. Ultimately, it was all that volunteer work, my crazy desire to “be a good person”, that ended me up here. But you already knew that. Of course you already knew that.
And right now, you’re probably asking why I’m writing to you. It’s not like you’re ever going to read this. Hell, even if you were alive you probably would never read this. Although I’d like to think that you’re standing over my shoulder right now, reading this as I write it. But that’s kind of besides the point. The point is: I’m writing a letter to a dead girl, and that would strike a lot of people as kind of odd.
I don’t really know why I’m doing this, to be honest. It’s not even a letter, really, as much as it is a memoir or a diary entry with your name and a comma at the top. It’s about my life, all the ‘wrong turns’ I made up until this point, all the trials and tribulations and disasters that lead me to this jail cell.
The purpose of letters is to tell a story or to explain to somebody what’s happened while they’ve been away. And this is both, though mostly the first.
But you already know the story. Hell, you co-wrote the story. So that still leaves the question of why almost completely unanswered. All I know is that I want to write out the story, but it doesn’t seem like the kind of story that only one person should read and know. It’s not the kind of thing you can put in journal entries. But it’s also the kind of story that nobody else should be allowed to read, because it’s a story that’s so close to my heart, so intensely personal, it’s almost crazy, and yet it’s driving me insane to keep it locked up in my memories.
You know, I should probably just cut the crap. You always hated bull crap and even now you’re probably bitching to God or Satan or whoever you’re railing on nowadays about how much bull crap they and everybody else has put into the world. And good for you. Give ‘em hell.
In any case. I’m still rambling on, still dancing around the truth. Here’s the real story: I’m not ready to let go of my best friend.
I know. I know. You’re probably smacking your forehead right now, muttering about how much you knew this would happen and how little you wanted it to. But you can’t expect to walk into someone’s life and then just walk out again without leaving a little bit of a footprint. And when that footprint is the reason someone’s in jail? It’s a big mark.
But I’m kind of jumping ahead of myself. I’m doing this, other than the reason I said before, to get all of this down on paper. The couple years I knew you were so hectic, I could barely think straight. And is it really a surprise? Look at everything I had on my plate: You, the little girl wise beyond her years with imminent doom; my college roommate, who couldn’t hold a candle to your maturity; all my old friends who were sure I was out of my mind; and all the other people who probably think I’m going to Hell. I was completely caught up in how to get by from day to day trying to keep what little sanity I had left. And while that probably didn’t keep any of it at all, it probably kept me alive at the least.
In short, I’m not entirely sure I know what happened during that time. So I need to put it all on paper, iron out the kinks, figure out what happened and when and why. And I need to do it while holding on to those memories of you. So I’m writing it down in letters addressed to a girl who will never read them, who can never read them. But you’re going to have to stick with me while I do this.
And as always, you don’t have to care. You just have to listen.
