Mystic Cat

There is nothing to signal the cat’s approach;
No noise from velvet-padded paws
No cat calls or applause
Just suddenly, he’s there
His tail waving in the air

He is quite aware of his own dazzling presence;
He sits casually, non-committal
Maybe preens himself a little
And following feline protocol
Starts practising his mind control

Of course, a cat’s mind is inviolable and unfathomable;
He can always outstare
Anyone, anytime, anywhere
And only withdraws his gaze when bored
To leave you most profoundly ignored

A cat always knows the right time to disappear;
One moment he’s there
And then he isn’t anywhere
Vanishing like a puff of smoke
Under his invisibility cloak

You are aware once you are no longer in the presence;
The world seems empty once he’s gone
Bereft ever and anon
And yet, by his indomitable will
His feline magic lingers still
back to top
