This place was amazing! She took in the landscape--the expansive freshly-mowed lawn, the woods beyond. It was all theirs!
"I'm goin' to explore a bit!" she called to her parents, who were unloading their furniture out of the trailer, with the help of a few relatives.
She headed to the woods--woods always fascinated her with their silence and yet if one stood still long enough, it came alive. As she pushed through closely-grown trees and weeds, she was grateful she had thought to wear pants; though it did little to actually help her progress--the very trees seemed to be pressing in on her. She had never been in a wood or forest with trees so close to one another. She halted a moment, listening. There was no sound. She waited, and still there was nothing, though her heart began a peculiar beat that she could hear, as she quite suddenly felt closed in, as if the trees were crowding her.
Don't be ridiculous, Chloe, she reprimanded herself and continued on though doubts filled her mind. Had she really been in these woods only a few minutes--it seemed more like an hour. She kept on, hoping to see a doe, a small rabbit, an old tree house--anything interesting. The only thing which came to her attention and was remotely interesting-or peculiar-about this wood was the lack of sound, of a breeze, even.
A while later, though, the trees thinned and she stood at the edge of a small, circular meadow, a few wildflowers growing here and there. Well, at least she could see the sky. She stepped forward, only to be assailed with a single, strange thought in her mind, a fear--don't go any further. She shrugged it away and took a step.
Instantly, a melody filled her mind and caressed her ears, so sweet and wild, whimsical, haunting all at once, beckoning--a violin, or a flute, she did not know. Perhaps both--and it gently tugged her. Where was it coming from, she wondered, thinking to look around and yet her eyes would not stray to the side.
Come closer dear, just one more step, and then you'll be with the rest. In a land so fair, where haunting melodies float around your head, in the form of fey, come down with me ... a voice sweetly sang and Chloe took another step, every fiber of her being aching for the voice, the song. The earth opened up and then she was falling, falling; and still the voice echoed in her ears ... to the grave.
